IBADAN – All the pupils and teachers abducted from schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State have regained their freedom after spending 56 days in captivity.
The development was announced on Friday by the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, in a post on his X handle.
According to Onanuga, the victims were rescued through the efforts of Nigeria's security agencies.
"Finally, all the kidnapped pupils and teachers in Oriire, Oyo, have been rescued by our security agencies," he stated.
He disclosed that eight suspected kidnappers were arrested during the rescue operation and are currently in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), while several other members of the criminal gang were neutralised.
Onanuga also clarified that no ransom was paid and there was no prisoner exchange to secure the victims' release. He explained that one of the terrorist kingpins whose release had reportedly been demanded by the kidnappers remains on trial for alleged terrorism-related offences.
The rescue brings an end to weeks of anxiety following the abduction of 46 pupils, students, and teachers after armed men attacked three schools in Oriire on May 15.
One of the rescued teachers expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu and the security agencies for their efforts in securing the safe release of all the victims.
Further details surrounding the rescue operation are expected to be released by the security agencies.
