Obasanjo Rallies Support for Squash as 180 Players Compete in National Championship at OOPL

 Former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has called for increased support for the development of squash across the country, describing it as a sport suitable for both the young and old. He made this call during a press conference heralding the 7th edition of the Chief Olusegun Obasanjo National Squash Championship in Abeokuta.

The championship, which is taking place at the squash court of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), has drawn participation from no fewer than 180 players from different parts of the country. The tournament offers a platform for squash players to compete for honours and showcase their talents on a national stage.

Speaking at the press conference, Chief Obasanjo emphasized the unifying power of sports, particularly squash, and urged both public and private stakeholders to invest in squash facilities and grassroots development to further promote the game nationwide.

President of the Nigeria Squash Federation, Boye Oyerinde, also lent his voice to the development of the sport. He noted that hosting ranking events like the Chief Olusegun Obasanjo Championship is a strong catalyst for boosting awareness, performance, and popularity of squash in Nigeria.

The sponsor of the event, Otunba Yemi Lawal, explained that his involvement stems from a sense of social responsibility. He also acknowledged the growing enthusiasm for the sport and commended the unity among stakeholders who continue to drive its growth.

Similarly, the Chairman of the Ogun State Squash Association, Dipo Akingbade, spoke about the steady progress recorded by the state in squash development. He highlighted achievements made so far and expressed optimism about the future of the game in Ogun and beyond.

A major highlight for stakeholders was the recent qualification of Nigerian squash player, Onaopemipo Adegoke, for the 2025 World Games in China. They hailed the achievement as evidence that squash in Nigeria is gaining global recognition and can no longer be dismissed as a lesser sport.
