Inter-state Rail System Strategic For Southwest Development- Abiodun's Aide

The Special  Adviser to Governor Dapo Abiodun, CON, on Media and Strategy, Honourable Kayode Akinmade has said the inter-state rail system is strategic for the development of the South West region. 

Akinmade made this known on Saturday when speaking on the topic 'Regional Integration and Development: The case of Ogun State' at the Western Post 2024 annual retreat in Abeokuta.

He explained that upon the assumption of office of Governor Abiodun in 2019, he strategically came up with idea of speedy development through the concept of Multi-modal Transport Management System, which connects the State with others in the region through air, water, rail and road and as well gives access to the rest of the world

He noted that with railway interconnectivity, development in the southwest would be faster as the movement of people and goods is made easier.

"The inter-state rail system that cuts across the states in the Southwest have been efficiently explored by Ogun State for effective connectivity in the region. Presently, the state has more rail stations than any other States; there are five different stations within the stretch of Lagos and Ibadan alone.

He further "With an efficient rail system, an indigene of Ado-Ekiti can secure employment in Ogun State, get to office everyday from Ekiti and return at the closing hour around 5pm, and before 7pm he will be back in Ado-Ekiti.

"That is the type of regional integration we are institutionalising in the State so that individuals in any of the States in the region can freely interact, transact and relax in the State without hindrance," he said. 

The Special Adviser stated that oil exploration would soon commence in the state and that it would put the region on a more viable economic footing.

Hon Akinmade reassured that the Gateway International Agro-Cargo airport would be inaugurated soon, saying that it would be the best in the West Africa corridor with the largest runway and apron. 

The Special Adviser to the  Gateway State Governor stated that the airport would bring great relief to thousands of manufacturers operating in the State to get imported materials with ease and also transport their finished goods to the rest of the world without facing the traffic snarl in Lagos.

He stressed further that the airport would serve as a potent regional development tool and means of connectivity among the states of the region and with the rest of the world.

"Our government is presently working on a dry port at Kajola, which will sufficiently complement the Agro-Cargo Airport in the area of importation and exportation of raw materials and finished goods by manufacturers, and by implication serve as a better alternative to the Lagos Port that is often characterized by heavy congestion," said Akinmade.

The Special Adviser disclosed that the government had constructed over 500km of roads across the State to make mobility easier and connect other States more effectively, adding that the roads had made regional integration possible considering the strategic location of Ogun State in the region. 

"Of profound interest is the recent resolution by the Ministry of Petroleum Resources to start oil exploration in Ogun State and make the State an oil-producing State, which in the next twelve months will begin to unfold and put the region on a more viable economic footing.

"Our administration has invested heavily in agriculture to ensure food security, and just last week, the Governor allocated expansive lands to state lawmakers for the purpose of aggressive mechanised farming. It may interest you to know that our State is presently the largest producer of poultry products and cassava in the country. 

"Imbued with unwavering commitment to speedy development of the State and the region at large, through his ISEYA mantra, which encompasses : Infrastructure, Social Welfare and Wellbeing, Education, Youths Empowerment and Job Creation and lastly Agriculture, Prince Dapo Abiodun, upon his assumption of office, strategically came up with very brilliant idea of speedy development through the concept of Multi-modal Transport Management system, which connects the State with other states in the region through air, water, rail and road and as well gives access to the rest of the world.

CHOLERA,OGUN URGE RESIDENTS TO CONTAINERIZE WASTE

In the aftermath of the outbreak of Cholera in most states of the federation including Ogun,the Ogun State Waste Management Authority has appealed to residents of the state who are still exposing their waste to start containerizing them to reduce the spread of the disease.

The newly appointed Special Adviser to the Governor and Managing Director of OGWAMA,Hon Abayomi Semako Hunye make the appeal while inspecting the ongoing rehabilitation work at the Kurata Dumpsite in Ota.

According to him,it only by containerizing their waste that they would be easy for collection and disposal and can be prevented from contaminating the environment.

He said a situation where some residents expose their waste indiscriminately meant danger because when it rains they will infect the underground water which when not purified will lead to water- borne infestation that will result in cholera.

"Aside from this,these waste also find their ways to rivers and wetlands which will equally affect all the wells and boreholes in those areas leading to unwanted consequences.

Hunye therefore called on those living in those areas to avoid drinking well, borehole  as well as sachet water as some of them might not be fit for human consumption this time around.

He however assured the residents that OGWAMA will continue to perform its duties of proper waste management and urge them to make the job easier by containerizing them so that PSP in their areas can pick them adding that waste police are out to arrest those who are adamant to this appeal and directive.

"We want our people to heed this appeal in the interest of the general public so that the cholera issue can be contained as quickly as possible as everything is been done by the state government to reed our state of this disease" he concluded.

OGBOMOSO SUPREMACY BATTLE

The Soun and Chief Imam have been in a supremacy battle in the last few months.

Justice K.B. Olawoyin of an Oyo State High Court sitting in Ogbomoso has barred the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Afolabi Ghandi Olaoye and kingmakers from removing the Chief Imam the town, Sheik Teliat Yunus Ayilara. 

The Soun and Chief Imam have been in a supremacy battle in the last few months.

Muslims in the town who referred to themselves as “Registered Trustees of Ogbomoso Muslim Youths Forum” had taken the traditional ruler and the kingmakers who are members of the Soun-In-Council) to court over the planned removal of the cleric.

The case with the suit number HOG/31/2024, filed at Oyo State High Court Ogbomoso Division, has Registered Trustees of Ogbomoso Muslim Youths Forum as plaintiffs, while the Soun and the Soun-In-Council are the defendants.

The Judge in his ruling barred the defendants/respondents whether by themselves, their agents, privies, officers under their control, or any persons acting on the instruction of the defendants/respondents from suspending or removing the holder of the office of Grand Chief Imam of Ogbomoso land (in the person of Alhaji Yunus Olusina Ayilara) or in any way disturbing or tampering with the office of Grand Chief Imam of Ogbomoso land pending the hearing and determination of the Motion on Notice.

 

“The defendants/respondents and their agents, servants and/or privies and/or any persons acting under their control or on their instructions are also restrained in the interim from doing anything under any guise whatsoever to interfere with or impede the Grand Chief Imam of Ogbomoso land from carrying out the functions and duties of his office as Grand Chief Imam of Ogbomoso land pending the hearing and determination of the Motion On Notice filed herein.

“I put on record that I have taken judicial notice of the full names of the Grand Chief Imam of Ogbomoso land as Alhaji Taliat Yunus Olusina Ayilara and that of the 1 defendant/respondent as His Imperial Majesty Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye (Orumogege III), the Soun of Ogbomoso land.

"The hearing of the Motion on notice dated and filed 26/6/2024 is adjourned to 1/7/2024."

AFN PLAN TO HOLD 2024 SOUTH WEST ATHLETICS CONFERENCE

OGUN SWAN SET TO TRAIN 100 MASS COMMUNICATION STUDENTS ON ADVANCED SPECIALIZED SPORTS REPORTING

As part of activities marking year 2024 World Sports Journalists' Day, the Ogun state chapter of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) will on Tuesday, July 2, 2024 train mass communication students of Chrisland University, Abeokuta on Advanced Specialized Sports writing.

The training with the topic: "The Integral Role of Sports Journalism in the Media Landscape" will take place at the broadcast studio of the university on July 2, 2024.

The World Sports Journalists' Day is an annual international holiday for sports journalists to celebrate the importance of sports journalism as a unifying tool to bring people of diverse culture, religion, tribe and class together.

A former SWAN Vice President and veteran journalist, Deacon Kunle Olúwùsì will engage the students on elementary rudiment of sports writing, while the Assistant Manager News of Ogun State Television (OGTV), Biodun Alabi will also present a paper on sportscasting as an aspect of broadcast journalism.

The immediate past chairman of SWAN in Ogun state, Alh. Hakeem Akíntúndé will equally share his wealth of experience at the event.

The Ogun state Commissioner for Sports Development, Hon. Wasiu Isiaka will declare the event open, while the Vice Chancellor, Chrisland University, Prof. Babalola will deliver the open remark beginning from 12noon.

The Chairman of the association in the state, Comrade Michael-Azeez Ogunsiji urges members of the association to attend the event punctually.

Rivers Explosion: Nigerians In Diaspora Condemn Use of Weapons of Mass Destruction for Political Rallies

The Association of Nigerian Professionals in Europe (ANPE) has strongly condemned the use of weapons of mass destruction, including dynamites and explosives, by individuals loyal to former Rivers State governor Nyesom Wike, to terrorise the people of the state.

In a statement on Wednesday, ANPE President Dr. Reginald Agamah expressed shock and perturbation at the recent events in the state, describing the actions of Wike and his allies as "egregious and violent" and "utterly reprehensible".

"We unequivocally denounce these actions in the strongest terms possible as terrorism has no place in a democracy," Dr. Agamah said.

"The lives of our fellow citizens surpass their being used as bargaining chips in a desperate power grab by Mr. Wike and his allies."

The association demanded that Wike instruct his loyalists to halt their destructive behaviour and refrain from terrorist actions that may harm innocent citizens.

They also urged law enforcement agencies to take prompt action in apprehending and bringing to justice those complicit in the acts.

Dr. Agamah emphasised that politics should be a noble pursuit centered on serving the people, not a supremacy battle driven by greed and ego.

He, however, called on citizens to resist manipulative tactics and refrain from succumbing to violence, urging stakeholders to collaborate in restoring peace and security in Rivers State.

"We must recognize that the use of weapons of mass destruction constitutes a significant and imminent threat to the lives of thousands of innocent citizens," Dr. Agamah said.

"We will not stand idly by while our fellow citizens are exploited as pawns in a political game.

"Regrettably, the life lost in this tragic incident represents a truncated dream, a stifled vision, and a greatness that would never come to fruition. His demise is a poignant reminder not to allow desperate people to pursue power at the expense of human life and dignity.

"We earnestly entreat the citizens of Rivers State to resist the manipulative tactics of political figures, regardless of the monetary inducements offered to perpetuate chaos and unrest. Your lives possess a value that far surpasses their utility as pawns in a political game, and must refuse to be exploited in such a manner.

Ogun Govt Approves Allocation Housing Units To subscribers

 

...says scheme not for profit-making but service-driven 

Ogun State Government would allocate 200 housing units to Subscribers of the Kobape phase III  housing scheme Monday next week.

This information was disseminate on Thursday by the Honourable Commissioner for Housing, Alhaji Jamiu Akande Omoniyi while speaking at a press conference on the activities of his ministry.

The commissioner disclosed that the housing policy of the Dapo Abiodun CON-led administration was not for profit making, but rather as a social service to the people of the state and those in Diaspora who desire  to live and work in the Gateway State.

Omoniyi, therefore, put to rest the controversies  surrounding the allocation process, said that out of the 200 Subscribers, 110 will get their allocation letters from Monday on the first come, first serve basis.

He urged the Subscribers to look out for their names, even as he noted that 36 others who defaulted would have their deposits refunded to them.

"Out of the 200 Subscribers of Kobape phase 111 that have been writing and defaming the government, we will be allocating 110 Housing units immediately. These 110 were built based on their individual circumstances and, especially on first come first serve basis.

"From our records, 36 Subscribers defaulted, and decisions have been made to refund them immediately.  Although there is a clause in their allocation letter that whenever these type of things happen, there would be 10 per cent deductions as administrative charges.

"But Prince Dapo Abiodun has magnanimously waved this. They will have their refunds 100 per cent," he said.

The commissioner also noted that the 54 remaining Subscribers would get their allocation in the next batch, as their files are currently being scrutinised by the Ministry of Finance and Internal Audit.

"As soon as that is sorted out, that is just 27 blocks of 2-bedroom, which we will undertake and complete soon. They will have their houses delivered. You can be assured thar since the houses are bungalows, the houses will be completed between two to three months.

"Ogun State Government, under Prince Dapo Abiodun remains the  best in Nigeria in the provision of affordable houses. When others were selling their 2-bedroom at N15 million, our benchmark was N5.5 million in 2019. It has built more than 4000 housing units since its inception, which is more than what previous  administrations combined had achieved since 1976.

"This is because major inputs in the delivery of these houses were fully subsidised by the state government. What subscribers were paying for was just the buildings alone. The government gave the land free and also provided infrastructure," Omoniyi added.

He further explained that three estates at Sagamu, Ijebu Ode, and Ilaro with combined 500 housing units would be commissioned soon as works have been completed on them, and the houses are currently being painted.

OGHA URGES LGs TO COMPLEMENT GOV. ABIODUN'S EFFORTS IN REHABILITATING MORE RURAL HEALTH FACILITIES

 

Ogun State House of Assembly has called on the Local Government Councils in the State to complement the State Government by embarking on the rehabiltation and upgrade of more primary health facilities at the grassroot level. 

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide, threw the challenge today while responding to the submission of a member representing Yewa North II State Constituency, Hon. Wahab Haruna during a plenary conducted in Yoruba Language at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

Elemide noted that there was need for the councils to contribute to the health needs of the rural people, recalling that the present administration in the State had earlier embarked on massive rehabilitation, reconstruction and upgrade of some health facilities across the State.

He noted that more needed to be done by Government to ensure that most of the Primary Health Care Centres were renovated and equipped, especially for the benefit of the rural dwellers. 

Earlier in his presentation, Hon. Haruna had sought for the State Government's intervention in ensuring the renovation and upgrade of health facilities in his constituency to cater for the needs of the residents including Ijoun, Eegua, Igbokofin, Ebute-Igbooro and Ihunbo.

He noted that the recent outbreak of water borne diseases had made it expedient for them to have access to quality healthcare facilities.

CATTLE MENACE: OGUN ASSEMBLY SEEKS IMPLEMENTATION OF ANTI- OPEN GRAZING LAW, OTHER

The Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide has called on necessary government agencies to ensure a holistic implementation of the State Anti-open Grazing Law, with a view to controlling the movement of herds across the State. 

Elemide made the call today at the plenary while recounting on the report he received the previous day that some herders were moving cattle on the major road in the State.

He noted that the full implementation of the law would bring about sanity and enhance safety of the motoring public, saying that the attitude herders was against the existing law.

Also, the Speaker while reacting to the menace of land grabbers terrorising some residents of the State as reported by a member representing Ewekoro State Constituency, Hon. Yusuf Amosun, Elemide urged the people to approach the court of competent jurisdiction on matters relating to land grabbing and forceful evasion of landed property for redress.

He noted that it was hightime everyone saddled with the responsibility of enforcing the Anti-land Grabbing Law braced up and ensured sanity in land administration in order to avoid unlawful exploitation of the people and possible breakdown of laws and order.

CHOLERA OUTBREAK: OGHA SEEKS INTER-MINSTERIAL COLLABORATION, LAUDS ABIODUN'S EMERGENCE AS SOUTHERN GOVS FORUM CHAIRMAN

 Ogun State House of Assembly has called on relevant government Ministries, Departments and Agencies to collaborate with local government councils in the State and the general populace on the need to take proactive measures towards containing the spread of the outbreak of cholera in the State.

The Assemblymen led by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide made the call at a plenary held at Room 215 of the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan Abeokuta, which was being used temporarily in view of the ongoing renovation and reconstruction  of the Assembly Chamber to meet the current standard among the comity of State Houses of Assembly in the country.

Rt. Hon. Elemide make the call, while responding to the presentation of the Chairman, House Committee on Health, Hon. Wahab Haruna, who spoke under personal explanation on the need for the residents of the State to take necessary precautions to halt the spread of the disease.

The Speaker commended the State Government for its prompt intervention through purchase of necessary protective kits meant for the prevention of the spread, soliciting the collaboration of relevant MDAs and the Department of Public Health and sanitation at the local government level. 

Earlier in his presentation, Hon. Haruna underscored the need to enforce compliance to public health precautions and promotion of hygiene by private food vendors to save the citizens.

Contributing, his Yewa North one counterpart, Hon. Adegoke Adeyanju sought more awareness and intervention from the Government against the disease at the grassroot level.

In a related development, the Assembly has congratulated the State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun on his emergence as the Chairman of the Southern Governors' Forum in Nigeria, following the meeting of the forum that was hosted  by Ogun State yesterday.

OGUN ASSEMBLY PASSES RESOLUTION REQUESTING PROACTIVE MEASURES FOR PREVENTING FLASHFLOOD

 

As the rains begin in earnest, coupled with the warning of impending flashflood in some parts of Ogun State from the Nigeria Meteorological Agency, the State House of Assembly today passed a resolution seeking urgent need for effective flood control across the State to save the lives and properties of the people.

The State lawmakers passed the resolution following a robust debate,  after which the  motion converting the debate into House resolution was move by the Majority Leader Yusuf Sheriff, seconded by Hon. Yusuf Amosun and supported by a unanimous voice vote by all the lawmakers.

Earlier while opening debate on the House Resolution titled: H.R. No. 100/ OG/ 2024- "Urgent Need for Effective Flood Control Across the State",  the sponsor, Hon. Folawewo Salami said that having recognized the pressing need for flood control and drainage maintenance in the State, there was a need for the residents of the State, the State Ministry of Environment, and the 20 Local Government Councils to take proactive measures for effective flood control across the State. 

The call, Hon. Salami noted became imperative in the light of the 2024 weather forecast by the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMET), which predicted significant rain and coastal flooding due to rising sea levels.

"Mr. Speaker, emphasizing the importance of maintaining tertiary drainage channels, there is a need for the State Ministry of Environment to provide clear guidelines for desilting and dredging drainage channels in communities. Furthermore, it is paramount for the State Ministry of Information, private media houses, and companies to raise awareness and encourage residents to take responsibility for drainage maintenance.

To ensure compliance with drainage maintenance regulations, there must be improved utilization of Environmental Health Officers within Local Government Services.

 Additionally, it is imperative to establish uniform punitive measures, including community service penalties, to discourage neglect by individuals, business premises and industries across the State", Hon. Salami stated.

He therefore called on the State Government to ensure that all residents, commercial centers, and companies take proactive measures in maintaining and dredging their respective tertiary drainage channels according to the specifications provided by the State Ministry of Environment. 

According to him, "Local Government Councils across the State should urgently clear primary drainage channels, while the State Ministry of Environment focuses on clearing canals and major rivers across the State. Sir, just recently over the weekend, there was an occurrence of a flashflood within my constituency that claimed the life of an innocent resident in Odo Awela between Oluke, Oyero and Lisa; even as the loss of valuable properties occasioned by flooding in Kara and Isheri axis is still fresh in our memory.

The State Ministry of Information and Strategy should be directed to enhance public awareness campaigns, educating residents about the importance of regular drainage maintenance. Emphasis should be placed on fostering an attitudinal change among residents regarding their responsibility to prevent flash floods by maintaining drainage channels.

The State Ministry of Environment and all the Local Government Councils should collaborate in developing and implementing effective enforcement mechanisms. This includes better utilization of environmental health officers, known as "wole wole," to monitor and ensure compliance with drainage maintenance regulations, identifying and penalizing offenders.

The State Ministry of Environment should formulate appropriate punitive measures for individuals and corporate entities neglecting their drainage maintenance responsibilities. Additionally, the Assembly requests regular reports from the State Ministry of Environment and Local Government Councils on the progress made in flood control and drainage maintenance efforts to ensure accountability and continuous improvement", he submitted.

Others who took turn to contribute including the Majority Leader Yusuf Sheriff, Minority Leader Lukman Adeleye, Deputy Chief Whip Babatunde Tella, Honourables Adeyanju Adegoke and Segun Kaka sought the need for the Ministry of Physical Planning to always enforce compliance to approval for construction of drainage and necessary set back away from water channels before property developers begin construction.

In his response, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide corroborated his colleague-lawmakers by calling on the Physical Planning Ministry to synergize with the Ministry of Environment to supervise, the desilting and clearing of drainage and waterways, and avoid dumping of refuse in the drainages; while counselling property developers to avoid erecting structures below the water level.

Gov Abiodun Welcomes Ogun Pilgrims Back From Hajj

The Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, CON, has commended pilgrims from the State, who successfully completed this year's Hajj for making the Gateway state proud, describing them as worthy ambassadors.

The first batch of the State's 934 pilgrims to this year's annual pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia started arriving today, while others are expected on Wednesday, June 26.

Prince Abiodun, in a statement on Tuesday, described their stay in the Holy Land as worthwhile as it was in fulfilment of one of the five pillars of the Islamic religion.

He praised the pilgrims for their peaceful conduct, adding that Ogun State did not suffer any casualty, despite the huge number of deaths recorded this year.

The Gateway State Governor called on the pilgrims to let the spiritual journey strengthen their faith and connection to the Islamic tenets.

"On behalf of the good people of Ogun State, I welcome our dear pilgrims back home. Your successful completion of the Hajj is a testament to your devotion and commitment to your faith. We are proud of you and grateful for your safe return.

He further, "Our government is ready to continue providing logistics support to our pilgrims for seamless and spiritually enriching experiences during the Hajj."

It would be recalled that Prince Abiodun paid the shortfall of N119,560,712.70 in the pilgrims Basic Travel Allowance (BTA) as a result of unexpected vagaries in the foreign exchange rates.

While NAHCON used N1,252.01 per dollar to calculate hajj fare (BTA inclusive) to give $500 as BTA to each pilgrim, the CBN released BTA at N1,530.86 per dollar, which gave each pilgrim $415 instead of $500 earlier proposed.

Going by this development and in order to give each pilgrim $500 at the new exchange rate of N1,530.86 per dollar, the differential to be paid for the State's 934 pilgrims stood at N119,560,712.70.

OGUN SWAN CONDOLES EX-ZONAL SCRIBE, DELE OGUNLEYE OVER DEMISE OF ROYAL FATHER

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Ogun State Chapter has consoled the former zonal SWAN Secretary in the South West, Prince Dele Ogunleye over the demise of his Father, the Towulade of Akinale, Oba Femi Ogunleye.

Oba Ogunleye, one of Nigeria’s topmost Journalists, died in the United Kingdom last Wednesday at the age of 79.

SWAN Chairman, Michael-Azeez Ogunsiji in a condolence message described the late Monarch as a father, mentor,  leader and peacemaker who had  contributed to the growth of the journalism profession.

He said the Towulade of Akinale was a sport lover who showed support towards the success of the second edition of SWAN security Cup being held annually in the state.

" I want to sincerely express my sympathy to the entire family of Ogunleye especially to the former Zonal SWAN Secretary, Prince Dele Ogunleye over the demise of your father, it is indeed sad to lose him at a time that his wealth of knowledge is needed'

"May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may his legacy continue to inspire future generations,"

Ex-Sports Minister, Air Vice Marshal Adebayo Lawal (Retd.) Dies At 83

 

A former Minister of Youth and Sports and one-time Military Administrator of Benue State, Air Vice Marshal Adebayo Lawal (retd.), has died at the age of 83.

The retired military officer passed away in his sleep in the early hours of Sunday, June 23, 2024, at his home.

The news was confirmed by his daughter, Mrs. Yinka Enahoro.

According to his daughter, the late AVM Lawal died in his sleep in the early hours of Sunday, June 23, 2024 at his home at the age of 83.

The Sergeant at Arms at the National Assembly, Air Commodore Sani Zakari (rtd), who also confirmed the ex-minister’s death to the media noted that the funeral will be held on Monday.

“AVM Frank Ajobena (rtd) further informed us that AVM Bayo Lawal passed on in his sleep at the early hours of Sunday 23 Jun 24,” Zakari said.

AVM was born on 14 September, 1941 in Offa, Kwara State.

He attended Government College, Ibadan between 1955 and 1962 before joining the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) in 1963 among the pioneer officers.

Lawal was trained as a Military Pilot in West Germany from where he graduated in 1964.

His postings included Commander, NAF Port Harcourt (1969–1970), Commander, Enugu Air Force Base, 1970-72; NAF Kano twice; (1972–1973) and (1975–1977) and Air Officer Commanding HQ Tactical Air Command NAF Makurdi. (1977–1978).

AVM Lawal was a very active and vibrant fighter pilot who was at a point the Commander, Nigerian Air Force Base, Makurdi, 1977-78, before his appointment as Military Governor of Benue State in July 1978 until October 1979.

At one time, he was Director of Air Faculty Command and Staff College Jaji.

He was later appointed Federal Minister of Youth and Sports.

After retirement, he went into business and faith-based philanthropy.

He is survived by his wife, children and grandchildren.

SWAN CONGRATULATES SONAME ON REMO STARS CAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE QUALIFICATION

The Ogun State Chapter of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has congratulated the Chairman, Remo Stars football Club, Otunba Kunle Soname and management of the club for picking one of the Champions League tickets for Nigeria representatives.

Remo Stars football Club of Ikenne finished second behind Rangers football Club in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) table with 65 points from 38 matches.

In a congratulatory message, the SWAN Chairman, Comrade Michael-Azeez Ogunsiji said the return of the club to the continent was as result of adequate preparation and hardwork.

Comrade Ogunsiji who noted that the consistency of the club on the continent showed some level of planning, said there was the need for the club management to improve on the striking position to enable the club move beyond the first round of the money spinning CAF Champions League.

"We want to congratulate the Chairman of Remo Stars football Club, Otunba Kunle Soname, management and the entire coaching crew for picking the ticket to represent Nigeria at the CAF Champions League.

"The team's qualification was well deserved having amassed 65 points from 38 matches, it is our desire and prayer to see the club playing in the group stage of the competition and possibly win the trophy."

Ogunsiji said the qualification of the club would further enhance productivity, the socio economic activities in not just Ikenne but also the adjourning communities.

SWAN, therefore, used the occasion to urge the newly promoted feeders team of the club, Beyond Limits Football Academy to the NPFL to sustain the momentum and winning mentality in the just concluded NNL season.

The association stressed that, it would be a delight to watch both Ogun state based teams competing for honours in the NPFL next season.

The SWAN Chairman, however, charged other football clubs such as Gateway United Football Club, Stormers Sporting Club,  and Dino FC to strive hard in gaining promotion to the NPFL and NNL next season respectively.

Ogun Govt reserves right to protect mineral resources within its domain--- Abiodun’s Aide

The Ogun State Government said Governor Dapo Abiodun's Executive Order creating the Mineral Resources Agency is aimed at protecting  those resources in its domain and entrench decency and sanity in the sector,  for the common good of the people in the State.

It said the Agency was set up for mineral identification, geological mapping of the state, and data banking, in line with item 39 of the exclusive legislative list regulating mining activities in Nigeria.

Special Adviser to Governor Abiodun on Media and Strategy, Hon. Kayode Akinmade,  given further clarification on the restraining order of government on Mining mineral resources in the State, on Sunday, noted that while only the Federal Government can regulate mining activities across Nigeria, the mineral deposits are in States, and the mining activities occur in those States. 

"Thus, a State can not effectively plan or govern if it does not enumerate the resources in its jurisdiction and map them to know where they are. For example, it will be a colossal loss to build a mass housing project on a site that has the largest deposit of limestone or natural gas. The way the State Government can avoid this is to know what minerals are in the State, where they are, and in what quantity. 

"This knowledge helps the State attract investors. It also helps the State to effectively manage land so that sites that are by natural endowment suited for mineral exploration are not classified as residential or allotted for commercial purposes that waste the mining potential of the land. 

"It also avoids clash of investments as we have had agricultural allottees clashing with mining allottees on the same or adjoining land with the mining activities hampering the agricultural and ecological benefits of the farmers," he said.

According to Akinmade, the newly created Mineral Resources Agency will interface with other MDAs to avoid clashes in future land allocation and  ensuring that prospective mining sites are preserved and uninhibited for investors who, if interested, would eventually approach the Federal Government for mining licenses and operations.

He added: "In reaching this decision, Ogun State was guided by the precedent of oil-producing states who, despite petroleum being on the Exclusive Legislative List, have set up ministries of oil and gas. These ministries do not regulate petroleum or conflict with the DPR’s regulatory mandate over the petroleum industry. 

"Rather, they focus on host community development, conflict avoidance and resolution, maximising petroleum participation in the State (attracting investors) and warehousing statistics. This is the same model that the Ogun State Agency will adopt. 

"Additionally, we must remember the recent unfortunate explosion in Ibadan, Oyo State that destroyed several properties and claimed lives, because of the actions of miners operating in the State under federal license without interface with or recourse to the State Government at all. 

"A State Government that bears the responsibility to secure lives and properties must also have a means to know what the threats to that security are, the identity and nature of the actors exacerbating those threats, and the level of the public’s exposure to those threats." 

The special adviser noted that while mining is exclusively federal, security of lives and property is concurrent and State Governments must know the businesses and investors who have obtained federal licenses to import and store dynamites, noxious chemicals, and other harmful materials that are incidental to mining. 

He  also stated  that  Ogun State Government has the constitutional right to regulate chieftaincy matters in the State. 

According to Akinmade, if persons who are subjected to chieftaincy laws are breaching the peace or undermining public good, the State Government can call such persons to order. 

"In doing so, the Gateway State is not regulating the activity but the persons. As an example, the Central Bank does not regulate cryptocurrencies (which are digital assets under the SEC’s purview). However, the CBN regulates banks and can order banks to not support crypto transactions, as it did in the past. 

Inclusion, "Mining remains the Federal Government’s exclusive mandate, but by the new order, Ogun State Government has barred state chiefs subject to state law, from participating in that space. This is in order."

One Year In Office, Not For Merry Making But A Day To Rejoice For The Restoration Of Sanctity Of The Legislative Arm" --- Says Elemide

The Speaker of the Ogun State House Of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Olusegun Elemide has described the one year in office as not just an anniversary for merry making but rather  a day to rejoice for the sanctity of the legislative arm.

Rt.Hon Elemide made the statement in a speech, e-signed by the SA to Governor , Mr. Kunle Idowu , delivered at the special plenary , marking the 1st Year Anniversary on Thursday, 20th June, 2024.

His words: "Today is not just an anniversary for merry making, rather it is a day to rejoice that the sanctity of the legislative arm in the State is being restored to deliver on its core duties and responsibilities of promoting quality representation through the passage of people-oriented legislations and resolutions meant to advance good governance, thereby enhancing democratic ideals. " --- he stated.  

Rt.Hon Elemide reiterated that the 10th legislative session was inaugurated on the 20th of June, 2023, and has since started working relentlessly to meet the yearnings and aspirations of the people of the State through various bills, resolutions and community engagements as well as other intervention programmes to make life better for the people of our dear State.

He disclosed that  no fewer than seven (7) bills have been passed and forwarded to the Governor for assent, while seven others are at the various stages of legislative process with over 23 motions passed into resolutions. 

"Each of the bills passed touches on the day- to -day running of government in the State, including the yearly appropriation bill, the judiciary fund management and Legislative funds management, as well as amendment to the Magistrates' Court and the Local Government law, 2024." 

According to the speaker of the 10th Assembly, he revealed that it  is on record that the various issues that required urgent public importance and those that need the immediate attention of government to enhance socio-economic and political development of the State were equally given immediate attention through House Resolutions, and such have been passed to the relevant government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) for necessary action.  Such issues passed into resolutions include those requesting for a review of the security architecture of the State to strengthen security and further protect lives and properties.

Rt Hon Elemide added that other resolutions passed with a view to promoting good governance and cultural heritage of the residents are those on adoption of the Harmonised Standing Order/ Rules of Procedure for the Nigerian legislature, Urgent Need to Stem the Subtle Take - Over of Native/ Kampala Local Industry by the Chinese, Urgent Need to Clamp Down on the Activities of Cultists Across the State and the Appointment of a Commissioner for the Ministry of Youth in the State.

"This tenth legislature also made a strong case through the passage of resolution requesting the Urgent Need for the State Government to address the Menace of Fake and Expired Drugs in the State; just as the Assembly passed another resolution Lifting the Suspension Restricting the National Union of Road Transport Workers 

( NURTW) from performing any Union Activities across all Motor Parks and Garages in the State and Confirmation of Commissioner Nominees and other appointment related resolutions.  Those resolutions bordering on conflict resolutions amongst companies and other individuals as well as those protecting human rights were also passed in the last one year.

Aside Bills and Resolutions, this Legislature also performed Quasi-Judicial function during the period under review as it mediates on matters that may cause disharmony among the citizens and/or a breach of the peace of the State.  Matters of this nature that were addressed during the period under review included the following among others;

(i) Series of Mediation Meetings/Enquiries were held to  resolve issues between Companies and Staff, Corporate  Bodies, Transport Unions and Local Governments.

(ii) Enquiry into Management of Land and Landed Property in the State.

Enquiry into Finances of the State through considerations of Annual Reports of the Auditors-General on the Financial Accounts of the State Ministries, Department and Agencies (MDAs) and the Local Government Councils.

9. Having been empowered by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to ensure that funds appropriated in each fiscal year’s budget were expended on the items for which they were meant, this Legislature also performed Oversight Functions by engaging MDAs on their expenditures towards ensuring that the processes are not only followed, but to also ascertain that such expenditures are in accordance with the appropriation approved for such MDAs."

Speaking on his emergence as the speaker, Rt. Hon Elemide emphasized that , there is no good governance without inherent conflicts but ability to swiftly ensure amicable resolution is what matters most. 

"It is in the light of this that all the members rose in unison earlier in the year to effect change of the Assembly’s leadership, by unanimously electing my humble self, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Olusegun Elemide as the new Speaker of the 10th legislature in the State.  Hence, since the Assembly took the step, we have continued to chart a common course for the progress of the Assembly and ensuring smooth working relationship with other arms of government for the delivery of democratic dividends to the people."-- he said.

"At this juncture, I wish to acknowledge the love and unflinching support of the Honourable Members of this House who did not only elected me, but stand firmly behind me and create the enabling environment for me to succeed.  I am grateful to you all.  Also, I am grateful to the entire staff and security personnel attached to the House for their cooperation and commitments to duty."-- he added.

He disclosed that the progress so far recorded has culminated in the commencement of the renovation of the entire Assembly Complex starting with the Hallowed Chamber which earnestly began last week ,  saying, " the Chamber has not been renovated in its forty (40) years of existence. " 

According to him,the 10th Assembly has also recorded another feat by finding a lasting solution to the issue of potable water that had eluded the House in the time past, with the drilling of a functional borehole in the Complex.

"Of equal importance is the construction of Toilets for the Honourable Members who hitherto face difficulties in answering the call of nature."

Rt.Hon Elemide also mentioned as part of the   achievements of the 10th Assembly were the  provision of Credit Facility Scheme for Staff, opening of Mini-mart where staff purchase consumable items at control prises and rendering of support to the needy through cash grants.

He rounded off on an assurance note, "  Let me assure the good citizen of our dear State that this 10th Assembly will explore all legislative means to partner with the executive arm towards giving our best without compromising the sanctity of the legislative arm. It will also continue to accord necessary priority to the progress and welfare of the Staff and our dear constituents across the State.  I therefore implore us all to continue to work collectively for the overall success of the current administration in the State."--- Rt.Hon Elemide concluded.

Gov. Abiodun Issues Three Executive Orders To Establish Two New Agencies, Restrains Monarchs On MOU

 

Ogun Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, CON,   has issued three Executive Orders to establish two new agencies, namely: The Ogun State Mineral Resources Development Agency and The Ogun State Landscaping and Recreation Agency.

In addition to the establishment of these two agencies, the third executive order, therefore restrains  monarchs from entering into any form of agreement or Memorandum of Understanding concerning mining activities or any other land matters in their domains.

A statement issued on Saturday by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Strategy,  Hon. Kayode Akinmade,  said the three executive orders take an immediate effect.

" Executive Order One: ESTABLISHMENT OF THE OGUN STATE MINERAL RESOURCES DEVELOPMENT AGENCY. Section 5(2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 vests in the Governor of Ogun State the exercise of executive powers of the State for the purpose of effective governance. Government's responsibilities include the security, welfare, good governance, safety and peaceful co-existence of all persons in the State, including in business clusters such as mining communities.

" The Gateway State has rich and vast deposits of mineral resources which must be explored responsibly, judiciously and without detriment to the environmental ecosystem in mining areas. NOW THEREFORE BY THE AUTHORITY VESTED IN ME AS THE GOVERNOR OF OGUN STATE UNDER THE CONSTITUTION OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA 1999 (AS AMENDED) PRINCE ADEDAPO OLUSEUN ABIODUN, CON,  HEREBY ORDER THAT: An Agency to be known as the Ogun State Mineral Resources Development Agency  is hereby established. 

" The Agency shall directly or through qualified third parties, conducts  and  establishes working relationship with host communities and local governments for the conduct of geo-technical and geological surveys of solid mineral deposit within their domains; geo-technical survey of solid mineral deposits in the State and maintain relevant data in the Sector; organises the solid minerals sector to the best interest of the State;

"Develop and strengthen the local capacity of investors in the solid minerals sector and build value re-orientation of indigene of the state towards  engaging  in solid mineral SME business; empower the youths in the state to participate in the mining business under a specified program;  promote solid mineral investment within the state through prospective and exhibition;  establish a data bank to document the rocks and minerals identified in the State; and  conduct regular visits to mining sites to forestall environmental degradation in collaboration with other Agencies. 

"To realise its objectives, the Agency shall be funded through fees generated from regulatory agency, budgetary allocation; grants and financial intervention from both local and international development partners; as well as gifts, aid and other legitimate contributions. This Executive Order shall take effect on the day of 2024.

"Executive Order Two:  ESTABLISHMENT OF OGUN STATE LANDSCAPING AND RECREATION AGENCY. One of the current administration's  Transformation Agenda is the structure to anchor on a policy of thrust of a sustainable economy through its infrastructural renewal and poverty alleviation programmes,  to restore order, and improve quality of life in the neighbourhood. 

" Part of the visible evidence of the Transformation Agenda is the attraction of both Local and International commendation of the current administration's  vision in the State with regards to Tree planting, landscaping and beautification programmes in line with the International environmental standard and its vision for a flood free, hygienic and beautiful Gateway State such as to mitigate the effect of climate change. The Ministry of Environment has started a massive and aggressive tree planting campaign to complement the beautification and landscaping programs to ensure environmentally sustainable, healthier and beautiful society. 

" This greening initiative of the Ogun State Government is therefore conceived not just to beautify the environment but also to be experienced as an effort to mitigate the effect of Climate change, save the environment and protect our future which is aimed at reclaiming open spaces from all agents of environmental degradation. 

"There is,  therefore, the need to create the Ogun State Landscaping and Recreation Agency, to  sustain the modest achievement of the Ministry of Environment in the area of environmental regeneration and restoration and through the provision of Parks, Gardens and Recreational Centres State-wide to preserve the biodiversity and ecosystem of the environment.

" THEREFORE, PURSUANT TO THE AUTHORITY VESTED IN ME BY THE CONSTITUTION AS THE GOVERNOR OF OGUN STATE, I HEREBY ORDER AS FOLLOWS; ESTABLISHMENT OF THE OGUN STATE LANDSCAPING AND RECREATION AGENCY.

"The Agency shall: Administer, maintain and manage all designated parks and recreation centres in the State;  carry out the general directives and policies of the government in respect of the development, maintenance and management of parks, recreation centres, gardens, playing grounds and open spaces in the State; Grant permits on the payment of the prescribed fees in any of the open spaces in the Parks or Gardens managed by the Agency;  charge appropriate fees for the use of facilities provided where necessary in the State's Parks and Gardens;  regulate the hours of use of the open spaces in the State Parks or Gardens by members of the public.

" Provide and maintain adequate security and environmental sanitation facilities for the State Parks, Gardens, Open Spaces and Recreation Centres;  enumerate and tag all trees within the State inclusive of those private tenements; monitor and supervise pruning and felling of trees within the State; advise on all matters relating to the greening programmes of the State;  cause fund for the maintenance of Parks and Gardens;  carry out such other assignment as may from time to time as directed by the Governor. 

"For the purpose of realizing its objectives, the Ogun State Landscaping and Recreation Agency shall be funded through any or all of the following means: Budgetary allocation; Monies received for services rendered; Grants and financial intervention from both local and international development partners; as well as  Gifts, aids and other legitimate contributions.

"Executive Order Three: BARRING TRADITIONAL RULERS IN THE STATE FROM ENTERING INTO ANY FORM OF MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING WITH REFERENCE TO MINING OR ANY OTHER LAND MATTERS.

" Ogun State has vast tracts of land containing mineral resources attractive to investors. The Ogun State Government is building a sustainable industrial economy which will significantly increase private investments, enhance job creation and improve revenue generation, thus making land, its management and use an area of key focus and interest. Whereas, the State recognises that to achieve the above, when miners and investors bid to acquire and explore available land for mining, industrialization or any other approved use by the State Government, such acquisitions and explorations must be made through approved, standard, preset, and transparent processes. 

"The State, therefore,  observes the current trend in which miners and investors circumvent regulation and government oversight by encouraging Traditional institutions to interfere with land management by entering into Memorandums of Understanding and other irregular legal arrangements. NOW THEREFORE PURSUANT TO THE AUTHORITY VESTED IN ME BY THE CONSTITUTION AS THE GOVERNOR OF OGUN STATE, I HEREBY ORDER AS FOLLOWS:

" That all forms of Traditional Institutions existing within the State are hereby with immediate effect barred from entering into any form of Memorandum of Understanding or Agreement with any individual, companies or organisations seeking Land within any part of the entire State for purposes of Mining or Industry and are to forthwith refrain from issuing any form of consent letters for mining across the State. 

"Any Traditional Institution or stakeholder in the Institution who flouts this Order shall be sanctioned in line with the provisions of the Obas and Chiefs Law and other relevant criminal statutes. From the date of this order, any individual, company or organisation that enters into any Memorandum of Understanding or agreement with a Traditional Institution or stakeholders,  whom this order applies on mining or industry shall be proceeded against in line with Section 61 of the Ogun State Criminal Law 2006 which prohibits interference with executive power. This Executive Order takes effect immediately".

Gunmen Strikes Again, Kill Popular PoS Operator in Ado Ekiti

 

 Gunmen in the early hours of Thursday shot and killed a Point of Sale agent popularly known as Alfa.

This is coming barely 48hrs after a union executive of commercial motorcyclists was killed also in broad daylight.

The incident happened at the shop of the victim which is located adjacent the gate of the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti.

Alfa is well known in the area with the display of bread on his vehicle and always available with cash.

According to reports, the gunmen who came on a motorbike shot at Alfa and made away with his money and other valuables.

One person who was transacting with him when the incident happened was said to have also sustained injury.

Though, police is yet to confirm the incident, the body of the deceased has been deposited in the morgue.

Food Security: Abiodun Allocate Farmland To Assembly Members

 

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, CON, on Thursday, allocated farmlands to 25 members of the state House of Assembly as parts of efforts aimed at ensuring food security and in support of the agricultural resurgence initiative of the federal government.

Prince Abiodun who presented letters of allocation to the lawmakers to commemorate the first anniversary of the 10th legislature at the Governor's Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, said the gesture was to make them contribute towards making the state the food basket of the country.

He said: "I recall that I had promised to allocate agricultural land to all the Ogun State legislators as part of our food security and agricultural resurgence initiative, which is in line with the renewed hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. 

"Today, in fulfilment of the promise and in commemoration of your one year in office. I am glad to present to you the letters of allocation for the speaker and the 25 members of the House of Assembly, and I hope that you would take advantage of this opportunity to ensure that you begin to grow what you eat and eat what you grow. This will be your way of ensuring the fulfilment of our desire to make Ogun state the bread basket of the nation."

Governor Abiodun, who lauded the  Assembly members for their commitment to the principles of democracy, good governance, and the welfare of the citizens, observed that their dedication to legislative excellence has been instrumental in driving the progress and development of the state 

The lawmakers, the governor emphasized, has in the last one year, passed numerous bills and resolutions aimed at improving the lives of the people, noting that their tireless efforts, unwavering integrity, and collaborative spirit with the executive has made the state one of the best in the country.

"For each of us, whether in the Executive or Legislative branch, history has presented a rare opportunity to lead and serve the people who have placed their hopes and aspirations on our ability to deliver the much-needed dividends of democracy. In doing so, we must understand and decide which side of the divide we want to be and how we wish to be remembered," he added.

The Gateway State Governor assured the lawmakers that his administration is committed to working closely with them to advance key initiatives that would further drive the state’s development just as he pledged to prioritize investments in infrastructure, healthcare, and technology, to make the state remains competitive and prosperous. 

"Together, we have a great task ahead. The expectation of our people is vast. We must strive to create an inclusive society where every citizen has the opportunity to thrive," the noted.

Speaking earlier, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide described the last one year as turbulent and filled with tension but maintained that the desire to give the people a purposeful representation saw them through the turbulence period.

He lauded the governor for embarking on the complete renovation and restoration of the assembly complex, adding that 24 new toilets have been added while water supply has been restored in offices of the legislators in the complex.

Rt. Hon. Elemide while assuring the governor of the Assembly's cooperation in making laws that would fast track the socio-economic development of the state, noted that members would be guided by the fact that they were in the Assembly to represent the interest of their constituents.

ABEOKUTA - The 2024 edition of SWAN Media Cup tagged SWAN/Oluwalogbon Electronics Media Cup has entered its final stage.

Defending Champions of the 2023 edition, Splash FM defeated the OGTV team 3 to 1 on penalty shootout after a stalemate at the duration time.

OGTV failed to seal off the match in the first half after many failed scoring chances.

The defending champions who had no goal on target throughout the entire duration curtailed the high pressing ball of the OGTV side with their tenacity and zealousness.

Splash FM who qualified as best loser from the group stage, struggled to beat Eagle FM, Ijebu-Ode 1 nil in the quarter final to qualify for the semi final against OGTV who beat Fresh FM 3-2.

Family FM continued their impressive run in the competition having lost out in the quarter final against Wise FM in the last year's edition.

The Kilasho boys were impressive from the beginning of the competition edging out Fresh FM 6-2 on aggregate before walloping Ogun State Information Officers 3-1 in the quarter final.

Family FM proved their superiority over under dog of the competition, Consolidated Chapel of Ogun NUJ with a comfortable 2 nil win in the semi final match to set up the final with Splash FM on Friday, 21st June, 2024 at the fun turf of the MKO Abiola International Stadium, Kuto, Abeokuta.

Addressing journalists, the State Chairman, Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Comrade Michael-Azeez Ogunsiji commended all participating media stations for their support and teamwork.

Ogunsiji enjoined the finalists to display good football and play safe.

He urged all media stations to give the final ceremony maximum publicity.
