BREAKING: Tension As Ogun Assembly Dep. Speaker Summons Lawmakers To Plenary Session

ABEOKUTA – The Deputy Speaker of Ogun State House of Assembly, Hon. Akeem Balogun has summoned members of the House to an emergency plenary session by 1pm today.

This is the first time the lawmakers will seat after the travails of the Speaker Rt. Hon. Olakunle Oluomo in the hands of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over an alleged money laundering, forgery, stealing, and diversion of Assembly fund to private account.

But today’s meeting may not be unconnected to the impeachment move by some lawmakers and alleged disappearance of the Assembly Mace.

A lawmaker who preferred anonymity told our reporter that, the mace cannot be declared missing, saying it was always in the custody of the Speaker.

The lawmaker maintained that, although, the mace was constitutionally supposed to be in the custody of the Sergeant-at-Arm, but Hon. Oluomo always takes away the Mace at the end of the plenary session.

Asked to comment whether today’s sitting was to begin the impeachment process of the Speaker, the lawmaker said, “that was not in the Order of the day, but when we get to the Assembly today, we have many questions to ask. We will see if the Assembly will sit without the mace and if truly the mace is missing.”
