October 1 protest: Ogun court restricts protesters to MKO Abiola Stadium, three other venues

A High Court sitting in Abeokuta, Ogun State, has restricted members of the #FearlessInOctober protest groups in the state to the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta, Gateway International Stadium, Sagamu; Dipo Dina Stadium, Ijebu Ode, and Ansar-Ud-Deen Comprehensive High School, Ota.

The court presided by Tajudeen. A.Okunsokan gave this order following an application brought by the Attorney-General of Ogun State in suit no AB/667/2024, and with Messers Afolabi Adeboye, Ifemosu Michael, Lekan Soneye (for themselves and members of the#FearlessInOctober protests); Bestman Okereafor (on behalf of the Progressive Students Movement), Francis Adeyanju (on behalf of the National Association of Nigerian Students) and Thomas Kehinde (on behalf of the National Association of Ogun Students), as respondents.

Other respondents listed in the suit are Yinka Folarin (on behalf of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights), Nicholas Eko (on behalf of the Socialist Democratic Movement), Koyejo Morenikeji, persons unknown and the Commissioner of Police, Ogun State.

By that order, the protesters are mandated not to converge in any part of the state except the designated venues.

The court directed the Commissioner of Police to ensure the enforcement of the ruling, which shall run for seven days as provided under Order 39 of the High Court of Ogun State (Civil Procedure) Rules 2014.

Ogun Intensifies Work On Federal Roads, Begins Palliative Work On Failed Portion Of Sagamu-Ore-Benin Expressway

 

Ogun State Government has commenced the reconstruction of the failed portion of the Sagamu--Ore-Benin Expressway near Sagamu to address the current traffic logjam being experienced by motorists on the road.

Governor Dapo Abiodun paid an unscheduled visit to the bad portion of the road on Sunday, saying that as a major road linking Lagos through Ogun State to the South East and South South of the country, its deplorable condition has caused untold hardship to those who ply it on a daily basis.

He said that though the reconstruction of the road was awarded by previous administrations, the contractors executed the project from the Benin end to the outskirts of Ijebu-Ode and could not complete it at the Interchange before abandoning it due to a lack of funds.

He said: "This is a federal road and it is probably the most important road to Southern Nigeria because it evacuates traffic carrying goods and persons from Lagos to Ogun State to the South-East and South-South parts of the country; it is a major arterial road.

"The reconstruction of this road was awarded several years ago by previous administrations. However, sadly, that reconstruction was started from the Benin end of this road.

"Sadly and curiously, from what we were told, the budget was not enough to allow for the completion of this road to the Sagamu Interchange. It stopped short of getting to Ijebu-Ode, somewhere around the outskirts of Ijebu-Ode.

"What we are seeing today is what our masses are suffering from. In the last three to four days, this road was totally impassable because, for some reason, there is a drainage that goes underneath this road that is meant to drain water coming from a canal. That drainage is completely blocked, and that is the cause of this problem."

Governor Abiodun said officials from the State Ministries of Works and Environment are currently working to create another drainage that would channel water away from the road, while the bad portion has been filled with hardcore to make the road motorable.

He disclosed that he has brought the condition of the road to the attention of the Minister of Works, who has promised to look into how to award a contract for its rehabilitation or at least provide palliative measures or some sort of intervention to salvage the situation.

Governor Abiodun also said he informed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the need for the Federal Government to do something about the state of the road.

"Let me confirm to you that last week Thursday, I also brought the issue of this road to the attention of Mr. President. For the avoidance of doubt, let nobody think that Ogun State has not been responsive.

"Knowing fully well that the Federal Government has a lot of critical roads to deal with, and as a responsive state government, we deployed our Ministries of Works and Environment to this site. What they have done is identify the immediate cause; they found out there is a construction that has blocked the drain.

"I have sought from Mr. President so that the Ministry of Works can immediately award this road to a reputable contractor, and I know they are working on it.

"However, Mr. President has also instructed me that if we do not get the attention as fast as we want, the Ogun State government should go ahead and take ownership of this section and repair it," he added.

Governor Abiodun promised that if within the next two days there is no clear evidence coming from the federal government to commence serious reconstruction work, his administration would step in to take ownership of the section of the road and carry out total reconstruction.

Ogun Govt Condemns Alleged Invasion of Kuto Market By Hoodlums

Ogun State Government has described as condemnable the alleged invasion of Kuto Market in Abeokuta by some hoodlums and policemen, purportedly for the purpose of demolishing and reconstructing the market.

The Gateway State government said it was not aware of any move to demolish the popular market, describing the invasion as illegal and unacceptable. 

It noted that the policemen brought by the alleged developer were not from the Ogun State Police Command but were hired from a neighbouring state.

The government commended the prompt intervention of personnel from the State Police Command for the arrest of two of the policemen who were brought to participate in the illegal demolition.

The state government said a manhunt has been launched to arrest the person who hired the uniformed men and hoodlums to foment trouble in the popular market.

The government promised that all those involved in the breakdown of law and order in the market would be brought to book.

It further urged the market women and the youths in the area to remain calm, stressing that adequate security measures will be put in place to prevent any attack from land speculators.

Nigeria to Save N5.4trn From Subsidy Removal in 2024-Abiodun

......urges constructive engagement with govt

The Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, CON, has disclosed that the subsidy on fuel, if not curbed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, would have cost the country a whopping N5.4 trillion by the end of 2024.

Prince Abiodun noted that it would have been disastrous for Nigeria to pay such huge amount on subsidy on fuel against the Federal Government's budget of N6.7 trillion for the same fiscal year.

The Gateway State Governor stated this during the Special Church Service commemorating the 64th National Day celebration held at the Cathedral Church of St. Peter, Ake, Abeokuta.

He said the money is now available for the development of infrastructures across the country

To him: "The Federal Government, under the amiable leadership of our President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, wasted no time in embarking on some very bold and audacious initiatives aimed at repositioning our economy and saving us from bankruptcy. We must persevere.

"Mr. President removed the subsidy, which, if not curbed, would have cost us N5.4 trillion by the end of 2024.

"We have been busy subsidizing our neighbours; these are funds that can be invested in improving our infrastructure and other social services.

"Our budget this year for infrastructure was N6.7 trillion, meanwhile, the subsidy would have consumed N5.4 trillion, if not curbed or checked," Abiodun explained.

Abiodun, while calling on Nigerians to engage the government constructively and not join those fanning the flames of discord, said that protests would not achieve anything other than looting and vandalism of public properties.

"Let us be resilient, let us continue to pray, let us persevere, and let us hold on to our faith in Almighty God.

"Let us not join those who continue to fan the flames of discord in our land, and those who are calling for protests, violence, and civil disobedience, which only leads to vandalism, looting, and destruction of public property.

"Let us engage constructively and work with the government, knowing that this administration is an inclusive one," he added.

The Governor also disclosed that his administration would continue to implement measures to cushion the effects of the present realities, adding that his administration has deployed CNG buses, started energy transition programs with the launching of e-bikes, reduced workdays for civil servants from five to three days, and provided free medical services for the poor and the elderly, among other initiatives.

He noted that his administration would soon be completing its farmers' markets across the four zones of the state, adding that the state government's Gateway Trading Company, where food items would be sold at wholesale prices, would soon begin operation.

"We will soon complete our farmers' markets across the four zones of the state, where food items will be sold at affordable prices.

"Very soon, you will see our Gateway Trading Company that will start selling different items in different zones across the four zones of the state at wholesale prices. We will continue these types of initiatives to cushion the effects of the current realities," he said.

Earlier in his message titled "Leading Our Nation Forward in a Time Like This: Lessons from Elisha's Leadership," the Diocesan Bishop of Ijebu North Anglican Diocese, The Rt. Rev'd Dr. Akinwande Godwin Odubena, who also read from the book of 2 Kings, Chapter 7, Verse 1, noted that leadership plays a crucial role in the future of any country.

Rt. Rev'd Odubena, who stressed that Nigeria is currently dealing with hyper-inflation, problems of oil theft, vandalism, an increase in unemployment that has given birth to internet fraud, insecurity, infrastructure challenges, kidnapping, and banditry, added that the citizens must be hopeful for a better Ogun State and Nigeria as a whole.

The Diocesan Bishop, while noting that it was important for the people and the leaders of Nigeria to trust in the plan of God, said that unity and prosperity must be prioritized.

While urging the leaders of the country to look into the current issues of hardship and hunger, Odubena said the country and its leaders must face their challenges head-on, persevere, and not allow anything to deter them from moving forward.

The Rt. Rev'd Odubena urged leaders in the country, state, local government areas, and homes to recommit themselves to God, appealing to the congregation and the people of the country to speak hope and not curse the nation and her leaders.

Odubena also charged everyone to embrace dialogue to address issues with the government and not to give room for protests and violence, stating that there was a need to exercise caution and move away from vandalizing public infrastructure in the name of protest.

The preacher called on parents and guardians to call their children and wards to order.

The only Bible reading of the service was read from the book of 2 Corinthians, Chapter 11, Verses 16-31 by Governor Dapo Abiodun.

The Nigeria born sprinter breasted the tape at 30 minutes 11 seconds, Gyang Raymond also from Plateau State came second with 30 minutes 14 seconds while Coupang David Boyi and Ismer sadjo came joint third with 30 minutes 54 seconds.

In the female category, Blessing Shambaz came first with her time best of 35 minutes 58 seconds, Daylop Patience came second with 36 minutes 51 seconds.

While in the feminine Wheel chair race, Chula Muritala Enweren  came first,Adefala Nofisat came second. In masculine category, Sola Opalaye emerged winner , Sefiu Ojeleye came second and Akannì Jelili took third position

Speaking at the event, the Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, CON, who was represented by his deputy, Mrs Noimot Salako-Oyedele said the present would continue to partner various stakeholders towards the development of sports in the state.

Prince Abiodun commended the organisers for their continued efforts to sustain the marathon race which he described as good step ahead of the forthcoming National Sports Festival in the Gateway State.

The initiator of the race, Chief Bukola Olopade said plans were on to ensure that the organisers of Abeokuta marathon race get a bronze label from the International Athletics Federation ahead of the 5th edition of the race.

SIX THOUSAND RUNNER TO COMPETE IN THE FOURTH EDITION LOTUS 10KM ABEOKUTA RACE

 

The Former Commissioner for Youth and Sports in Ogun State, Chief Bukola Olopade has expressed optimism that Nigerian runners will give their elite athletes a good run for their money.

Chief Olopade stated this during a media parley with members of Ogun State Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN, at the Association's Secretariat ahead of 4th edition of Lotus 10 kilometre Abeokuta Race.

 The LOC, National Sports Festival chairman who noted that the Nigerian runners are in their best form said about six thousand runners including elite athletes had indicated interest to participate in the race slated for Saturday 28th September, 2024.

He announced that plans had been designed to check cheating during the race, adding that medals would not be presented to athletes that failed to complete the race.

Chief Olopade commended the efforts of the state government towards the development of sports in the state.

The Project Manager, Mr Seyi Johnson who explained that the race would take off from Oloke and terminated at Ake Palace said arrangements had been made to spice up the race with series of entertainments at strategic locations for residents in the state capital.

Mr Johnson said the said for wheelchair runners would commence at half past six in the morning while that of able athletes would begin at 7am.

In a remark, the commissioner for Sports Development, Mr Wasiu Isiaka gave the assurance that the state government would provide the organisers with the needed support to ensure the race achieve the desired goals.

Buildings Above Two Floors in Ogun to Carry Insurance Certificate - Govt

Any construction above two floors in Ogun State must obtain an All Risk Insurance Policy Certificate.

This is in line with the provisions of the Ogun State Building Production Management Authority Regulation (OGBPMA) 2022.

The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Olatunji Odunlami, stated this at a stakeholders' meeting held at the Olusegun Osoba Press Centre, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, on Wednesday.

Odunlami called on insurance companies to serve as watchdogs in the drive to enforce the provisions of the law.

To him, the All Risk Insurance Policy should be maintained by the contractor or developer and will cover both human and material assets during the entire construction period, ensuring that persons engaged to work on site or who have lawful access to be on site, as well as building materials and other equipment, are protected against any form of injury, loss, or damage.

“The coverage extends to innocent passers-by and their property, as well as adjacent properties, humans, and animals domiciled in them,” the commissioner said.

Additionally, property owners and subsequent occupiers are also required to obtain a Building Insurance Policy to cover the building itself against fire outbreaks, damage, collapse, and other unforeseen circumstances.

The Gateway State commissioner reiterated the present administration’s commitment to enhancing public safety and reducing construction site accidents.

He further disclosed that the protection of investors and developers from financial losses, the promotion of a culture of risk management and responsibility, as well as supporting the growth of a resilient and sustainable building and construction industry in the state, is their target.

On his side, the Permanent Secretary, Engr. Sakirudeen Salaam, stated that the consultative meeting was held to publicize the provisions of the principal law and the five regulations that guide the activities of the ministry and its agencies, so that relevant stakeholders can collaborate with the government to achieve orderliness in the physical planning of the state.

Speaking on behalf of the insurance companies, one of the underwriters, Mr. Yomi Babalola appreciated the state government for showing the willingness to work with their sector to mitigate risk and protect the public from unforeseen circumstances, promising their full cooperation in achieving the provisions of the law.

NUJ CONDEMNS ABDUCTION OF OGUN JOURNALIST

The Ogun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) vehemently condemns the shocking and unlawful abduction of our member, Seun Odunlami, by operatives of the Nigeria Police from Lagos Command. 

This unacceptable act, reminiscent of Gestapo tactics, was brazenly carried out in front of Providus Bank, Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta, a few meters away from the Union’s Secretariat, Iwe Irohin Press Centre, by plain-clothed officers in the presence of some of his colleagues before being whisked away to an unknown destination with an unmarked bus while all his phones have since been switched off. 

We demand the immediate and unconditional release of Seun Odunlami, detailed explanation for the circumstances surrounding his abduction, as well as investigation into the actions of the police operatives involved. The police must also provide evidence of any wrongdoing or prima facie case against him, as this unacceptable commando-like arrest threatens the very fabrics of fundamental rights of journalists in Nigeria.

The NUJ Ogun State Council stands in solidarity with Seun Odunlami's family and colleagues, who are understandably distraught and concerned for his safety.

We urge all relevant authorities to intervene and ensure Seun Odunlami's safe return while the NUJ will continue to advocate for the protection of journalists' rights and the rule of law in Nigeria.

Suspected Armed Men Abduct Ogun Journalist, Whereabouts Unknown

 

The Publisher of News Junt online news platform, Seun Idunlami has been abducted  by suspected armed men in Ike-Ilewo area of Abeokuta, Ogun State on Wednesday.

Odunlami was taken around 1:00 pm while standing outside a bank, where he had gone to conduct a transaction with a colleague.

Speaking on the development, the colleague who preferred not to be mentioned said the suspected’ armed men arrived in a car and whisked Odunlami away.

 

When his colleague called him on the  phone to ask where he was being taken, Odunlami replied that the suspected armed men  identified themselves as the Special Anti Fraud Unit, and were taking him to Ikoyi.

“The gunmen arrived in a car, handcuffed Seun, and dragged him in”, the colleague recounted. “When I called him on the phone, he said they were from the Special Fraud Unit, Ikoyi”.

Odunlami's phone was switched off after the abduction, leaving him incommunicado. 

Sports Minister Convenes Paris 2024 Post Olympics /Paralympics Review Meeting

 

 ......Charges sports administrators to leverage on the lessons learnt to write the next chapter for sports development

Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh on Tuesday the 24th convened the Paris 2024 Ministerial Olympics /Paralympics Post Games Review meeting to unearth the remote and immediate cause of Nigeria's unimpressive performance at the games and to chart the way forward.

Senator John Owan Enoh described what transpired at 2024 Paris Olympics as unfortunate and a tipping point in the evolution of sports in the country, he charged all present at the meeting to engage in unfettered exchange of ideas that will not only chart a new path forward but assist in writing the next chapter in the nation's sports development.

He said, "I am wired up to succeed. But sitting at the Paris games, as the games ticked by, I waited for medals that never came. In my pre Olympic meetings, Federation after Federation made possible podium projections . What happened to those projections? Were they founded on objective reality, or were those projections simply made to please me? " 

Furthermore, he added what was of utmost importance, that the athletes and stakeholders  accept the fact that Team Nigeria performed poorly at the games and to immediately commence a rebuilding process based on unfettered analysis of what went wrong and put forward fresh ideas that would spark a positive change. He stressed that the outcome of the meeting would be determined by how purposeful and intentional the Sports Ministry and sports stakeholders were in tackling the challenges that continue to stymie the growth of sports in the country.

"Why we may not have planned for the outcome we had, the failure at the games is maybe a rude awakening, a tipping point that should spur everyone here present to commit that never again will we have to be where we are  after the abysmal outing.

The Sports Minister stated that everyone present in that meeting must take responsibility at the level they function if progress would've to be made.

The session was a no holds barred session. Various federations gave a recap on the games, what went wrong, and recommendations for the future.

Professor Ken Anygweje of the podium performance team gave a critical analysis on athletes' performance  ,a scientific perspective of Team Nigeria's state of preparedness for the games and recommendations. 

The director sports medicine and the anti-doping committee were not left out.

Although Team Nigeria did not win medals at the Olympics,there were events that signaled hope for sports in Nigeria. Events upon which the sector can spring forth from, both in Olympics and Paralympics.

The meeting was attended by the Permanent Secretary, and directors  of  the Sports Ministry, Presidents of the NOC and NPC ,the different Sporting Federations along with their Secretaries, technical directors, the Athletes Commission, Podium Performance Team ,the Anti-doping Committee,critical stakeholders.

Ogun To Disburse Grants To 236 PHCs

 

The Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, CON, on Tuesday, disclosed that his administration would soon begin the disbursement of grants and facilities to the 236 Primary Health Centres (PHCs) across the state.

This, he said, will ensure that the PHCs meet the requirements of the World Health Organization.

The Gateway State Governor stated this when he received the executive members of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), who were in the state for their 44th annual general meeting and Scientific Conference.

To him: "We have grants and facilities from multilateral organizations that we are going to begin to expend very soon, which will allow us to have a minimum of 236 primary health care centers built in line with the requirements of the World Health Organization."

Prince Abiodun further stated that his administration would continue to invest not just in primary health care centers, but also in secondary and tertiary health care institutions, adding that the state will also continue to invest in the training of doctors as well as in human capital development.

He noted that about one hundred primary health care centres equipped with solar energy, digital communication equipment, and digital record-keeping systems for maintaining patient records have been renovated by his administration.

While adding that his administration has continuously paid the hazard allowances of doctors in the state, the number one citizen of the state 

also stated that he has approved the payment of the accoutrements and the Clinical Duty allowances.

The governor urged the association to continue to meet so they can share knowledge and experiences and come up with ways to improve the health sector.

"I want to encourage you to continue to meet like this and to discuss among each other so that you can share knowledge, share experiences, and come up with ways and means to improve health care delivery.

"And when you come up with these resolutions, those of us in government would like for you to forward them to us so we can give you the needed support," he said.

He noted that his administration has begun the implementation of its health insurance scheme, which has been very successful, with the organized private sector and civil service affected.

Earlier in his remarks, the outgoing National President of NARD, Dr. Dele Abdulahi noted that one of the problems plaguing the association is the migration of doctors outside the country in addition to inter-state migration.

Dr. Abdulahi, while thanking Governor Abiodun for his giant strides in the health sector, urged the governor to help the association curb inter-state migration with the introduction of car and housing loans.

"One of the problems that are plaguing doctors in Nigeria, which affects our association a lot, is the migration of doctors.

"But of peculiar importance is not just the migration outside of the country but inter-state migration. It is one of the major problems that we have been noting, whereby we have the influx to other states," he said.

Gov Abiodun Calls For New Forward Operation Base in Ogun East

 

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, CON, has called for the establishment of a military Forward Operation Base in the eastern part of the state to help curb criminal activities in that area. 

Prince Abiodun made the call on Wednesday when he received the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 81 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General Farooq Mijinyawa, who paid him a courtesy call in his office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

The Gateway State number one citizen noted that the high volume of commercial activities in the eastern part of the state, also comes with criminal activities, hence the need to beef up security in the region.

He said: "I think one of the things you can do to help us sustain the peace that we have been enjoying in Ogun State is to think of putting some base, maybe some form of Forward Operation Base in the eastern part of the state.

"Right now, we are at the center where we have the state capital. We have a presence in Ogun West, but I think because of the level of commercial activities that are beginning to evolve in the eastern flank of the state, particularly with our airport there, you are going to see an exponential increase in business activities.

"Because every now and then, there are issues that want to test our resolve to maintain peace and order, and as you know, as a law enforcement expert, it is the speed with which you respond to these issues that determines how quickly you neutralize them.

"The Brigade Commander has often had to respond with dispatch through OP-MESA to places like Sagamu and Ijebu-Ode when we have issues. In fact, at times, we had to put men to stay there, and Sagamu-Ogijo is where these bad boys are constantly traveling between Ikorodu, Ogijo, Sagamu, and at times have issues with cultists, which sometimes get very bad. We cannot have such news emanating from Ogun, which is the industrial hub of the nation.

"We cannot have news filtering out of the state that will make potential investors uncomfortable, and you know that part of dealing with criminals is to be proactive by discouraging them. When they see your presence, they want to go to places where they can easily perpetrate their crimes.

"I think we can have men of the Nigerian Army there permanently, and we as a state will provide whatever it is that you need to facilitate so that it can happen immediately. If we have something around the Remo axis that will make it easier for the Army to deploy within minutes."

The governor emphasized that security is vital for economic activities, adding that his administration could not have implemented its vision in a chaotic environment, even as he lauded the Army for playing a critical role in the state's security apparatus.

He said that although Ogun is one of the most peaceful states in the country, its geographical location has put pressure on the government to provide not only infrastructure but also security to the people at all times.

Abiodun described the new General Officer as a round peg in a round hole, stating that his education, training, and exposure have adequately prepared him for the top military position.

While calling for more cooperation and support for his administration to maintain peace and order, the governor promised to assist the Army and other security agencies in the state to optimally perform their constitutional duties.

Speaking earlier, General Mijinyawa appreciated the governor for his constant support to the Army, especially in the area of welfare for the wives of fallen heroes, annual Army celebrations, and needed logistics.

"I have ordered my officers and men to continue the good work they are doing in the state to ensure that the peace that we have continues to thrive. Let me assure you that we will step up our efforts to ensure improved security in the state," General Mijinyawa concluded.

NSF 2024: Ogun Govt Pledges Partnership With SWAN For Wider Coverage

 

Ogun government has assured sports enthusiasts of its preparedness to host an exciting and hitch free National Sports Festival come 2005.

The Commissioner for Sports Development in the Gateway State, Hon. Wasiu Isiaka, gave this assurance while addressing sports journalists at the press centre of the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta state, venue of the ongoing National Youth Games.

The Commissioner assured of better sporting facilities to host one of the best festivals in the history or the country.

The Commissioner said in line with the vision of the festival to forge unity in the country, all athletes and officials will be  housed in one centre.

He added that, adequate transportation system between the three centres of Iperu, Ikenne and Abeokuta will be in place for easy movement of all participants at the Games.

The Commissioner also informed that the opening ceremony of the 2024 edition and all events of the Games will be glamorous are geared to match and even surpass the 2006 edition.

He assured journalists across country that it would partner with Sports Writers Association of Nigeria SWAN for a successful hosting of the 2024 National Sports Festival.

Isiaka noted that, the Ogun SWAN Chairman and other members of the association would be incorporated into the Local Organizing Committee as partners in progress to ensure adequate welfare of journalists covering the National Sports Festival.

He further: "We've discussed about it. The SWAN Chairman in Ogun and I have agreed that they will be in the next LOC meeting.

"I've even hinted the LOC chairman, Chief Olopade, about it. We are working on it, and I will try and make sure that at least one or two of them will be accommodated."

On the preparations for the media centre at the event, Isiaka assured that arrangements were already in progress, with the SWAN Chairman Ogun actively involved. 

He emphasized that the necessary steps were being taken to ensure smooth media operations during the festival.

"Yes, we have a media centre," Isiaka said.

"The SWAN Chairman Ogun is here, and we are working together on that."

"Olapade actually addressed the press on media coverage and how we are working to ensure proper arrangements for the media. There’s no problem as far as media is concerned." He concluded.

The competition period for the festival will be from 15th to 24th January while the closing ceremony will be on 25th January, 2025.

BRITISH BATTERY RECYCLING COMPANY TO BERTH IN OGUN

A five million dollar British battery recycling company is to be set up in Ogun State.

The British High Commissioner in Nigeria, Mr. Richard Montgomery, disclosed this on Wednesday when he led some officials of the Commission on a courtesy call on the State governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, CON, in his office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

Mr. Montgomery said that when operational, it would be the best in Africa.

To him: "My brief visit to this state is about the deal put together for recycling, which is moving out of Lagos State and establishing a new plant here for recycling e-waste. The Ogun Invest and the Director General, Lands are working to ensure the deal comes off the line, and I am glad to be here to join the final conversation. I think that will bring new technology and new jobs to the Gateway State.

"The battery we will be manufacturing in Ogun State will be the first of its kind in continent of Africa, and we will make the State the leader in battery recycling in Africa.

"For the first time, it is now possible to recycle the cell back into chemical form in Africa and export the black mass, which contains the minerals inside the battery, to make new batteries.

"It is really exciting that we received support from Ogun Invest, and officials from the Bureau of Lands confirmed the Certificate of Occupation. We can say that the investment will be about five million dollars, and we want Gateway State to be the place where this industry can grow," the High Commissioner said.

He noted that his country would like to participate in energy, technology, tertiary education, agricultural processing, and also explore how to find more United Kingdom-linked companies to invest in the State, adding that discussions are ongoing with the state team on how to proceed in the coming year.

Mr. Montgomery hinted that their visit to the state was partly to review the progress being made in Ogun as the industrial hub of the nation and how the State has fared in the areas of infrastructure and creating a conducive environment for business to thrive.

The High Commissioner noted that his country was not only interested in what the state has achieved in the last five years but is also trying to identify business opportunities for his government and his country's companies to invest in.

He stated that the British International Investment, a financial development institution, has invested in one of the major cashew processing and export companies, adding that his country is ready to offer technical assistance to the state’s mass transit system, which is currently being test-run.

Responding, Governor Abiodun noted that the State has a large expanse of land suitable for the cultivation of food and cash crops, just as large deposits of limestone and other minerals are found in the State.

He said the state is home to numerous manufacturing companies and has the biggest industrial park as a result of the gas pipelines from the Niger Delta that crisscross the length and breadth of the State.

Prince Abiodun noted that the deliberate provision of road infrastructure and other amenities was to attract more investments to meaningfully impact the lives of the people.

The governor stated that the state is doing well in the area of agriculture as it contributes to food security in the country, while it has also repositioned the education and health sectors of the State.

He added that the establishment of the Ministry of Transportation, the development of the Transportation Master Plan, and the building of a cargo airport were some of his takeaways from participating in a summit in the United Kingdom in 2020.

The Gateway State governor, who acknowledged the relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, said the state has benefited from the training of its staff, especially those managing the State transport system.

Governor Abiodun said: "We are open for business. Our administration has made the environment attractive. We have reduced bureaucratic bottlenecks to the barest minimum. We have made land acquisition seamless for investors. We have grown our economy.

"The Gateway State is effective and forward-thinking. I want to thank the High Commissioner for the support we have enjoyed from the British Foreign Office."

Ogun Govt.To Partner Manufacturing Africa, Others To Boost Manufacturing Sector

Ogun State government,  through the State Investment Promotion and Facilitation Agency(Oguninvest) will be collaborating with  Manufacturing Africa programme, an initiative of the UK government through its Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) in the British High Commission  and Hinckley E-Waste Recycling Ltd  towards a vibrant manufacturing sector in the State.

To this end, there will be an interactive session with the media, aimed at  showcasing this pivotal partnership to enhance the manufacturing sector and boosting investor confidence in the Gateway State, as a leading industrial hub in the West Africa corridor. 

 Special Adviser/DDG of OgunInvest, Ms Sola Arobieke,  made these known in a statement on Tuesday,  adding that Manufacturing Africa Programme plays a crucial role in supporting industrial development and innovation across Africa, while FCDO is committed to advancing manufacturing capabilities and promoting sustainable practices. 

She  added that the proposed  collaboration would  leverage  the FCDO’s expertise in market studies and corporate finance support to foster a robust manufacturing ecosystem in Ogun State and Nigeria at large. 

 To her, Manufacturing Africa Program’s involvement in this initiative underscores its dedication to enhancing Africa’s industrial sector, creating high-quality jobs, and driving technological advancements.

Also, she described  Hinckley E-Waste Recycling Ltd, as  a pioneering leader in electronic waste management, as the  company specializes in the safe and efficient recycling of electronic waste, employing advanced technologies and sustainable practices to manage e-waste responsibly, adding that their innovative approach not only supports environmental conservation but also promotes best practices in electronic waste management across Nigeria. 

"Hinckley Recycling became the first government approved E-Waste recycler in Nigeria in 2016. The company is now expanding its operations to Ogun State with a groundbreaking project to establish the first lithium-ion and lead acid battery recycling and treatment plant in Africa. This $5 million investment in the first year will utilize patented recycling technology and create 100 direct jobs. The project is supported by a market study and corporate finance assistance from Manufacturing Africa.

NYG: Ogun Star Shines Takes Medal Tally To 20, Wins 5 Gold, 6 Silver, 9 Bronze In Shooting, Gymnastics, Para-Table Tennis

 

It was a day of mixed results for Team Ogun at the ongoing National Youth Games tagged Asaba 2024 as they had success in some games and faltered at others.

Team Ogun claimed the first gold medal of the Games courtesy Abdulrasaq Abolaji in Floor Artistic Gymnastics, followed by another gold best all round in artistic gymnastics and one bronze in pommel horse.

As Shooting event of the 8th National Youth Games eventually came to an end with Team Ogun recorded 3 Gold, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze medal.

Atinuke Onabiyi won Gold in Female 10m Air Rifle for Team Ogun on Sunday in Shooting which qualified her to represent the National team at next year's Olympics.

The team also excelled in shooting event with another 3 gold in Mixed Rifle Event.

Onabiyi Atinuke Imoleayo who set a new National Record Shooter of 502.1 has finally delivered another Gold  medal to Ogun State with Idowu Tobiloba.

With the exceptional performance of Team Ogun shooters, all the three Ogun State Shooters have been invited by the Nigeria Shooting Sports Federation (NSSF).

 

In Athletics, the mixed 4×400m team won bronze medal, while the male 100m team also won bronze medals.

It was not a good outing for the table tennis teams as they lost in both the male and female doubles.

The male team of Mubarak Balogun and Roqeed Bisiriyu lost to Oyo state, while the female team lost to Delta state.

Just like their National Team at the Paralympics, the Para-Table Tennis team won 2 silver and 1 bronze medals for Ogun State.

Raji Aisha won 2 silver medals in girls single and girls mixed double, while Tobi Ogunyemi in the boy's single.

Adams Makareem closed the medals table  with 1silver on Monday at Strokeplay event for Golf.

Ogun LG POLL: LYSSC OGUN STATE CHAPTER ENDORSES BALOGUN

ABEOKUTA In warming up for the November LG POLL in Ogun State, the League of Youth and Students for Sustainable Change (LYSSC) Ogun state Chapter has declared their support for the Aspiration of Hon. Balogun Olaniyi Afeez(BOA) in the coming Chairmanship election in Abeokuta South Local Government. 

LYSSC appealing to the Gateway State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun CON, and the State Party Leaders to consider presenting Balogun as the flag bearer of APC in the forthcoming chairmanship Election.

The body with it's headquarter in Abuja, made this known through their Ogun state chapter coordinator when they paid a visit to Youth and Students Leaders within the Gateway State.

The state Coordinator Comrade Adekanlu Damilola stated that having received briefings on the profile of interested persons in the Chairmanship position of Abeokuta South in the coming election, they found Hon. Balogun to be the ideal candidate to endorse because of his Antecedents and acceptability to all saundry. 

To him: " The body  endorse him and appeal to the Gateway State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun CON, and other state Party leaders and Citizens alike to do Same.

On his side, the National Research Chairman of the group present at the gathering, Comrade Afefe revealed that on the instruction of the National body of the group, he independently came into the state few weeks ago and was impressed by his findings as regards the local government elections especially that of Abeokuta South. 

Stating that his research shows Hon. Balogun to be generally acceptable by Party Leaders, the Elders, the Youths,and the Citizens of Abeokuta South alike which according to him is crucial in the electioneering process.

It will be recalled LYSSC, is one of the support groups that tirelessly worked for President Buhari's re-election in 2019, and the Election of President Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and all Apc Candidates at all levels in the 2023 General Election. The group worked directly under His Excellency Babatunde Fashola in the Presidential Election Planning and Monitoring Committee of the APC.

Gov. Abiodun Condoles Zulum Over Flood

 

Chairman of the Southern Governors Forum and Governor of Ogun State Prince Dapo Abiodun, has sympatized with his Borno State counterpart, Prof. Babagana Zulum, and the people of the State over the incident of flood that recently ravaged Maiduguri, the State capital.

The Governor, in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Strategy, Hon. Kayode Akinmade, said the ravaging flood has caused serious humanitarian crisis in the State, which requires urgent support from all well meaning Nigerians.

He said “while natural disasters of that nature were inevitable, the prompt response like that of the government of Borno and the Federal Government would go a long way to ameliorate the situation and bring about immediate relief for the people.”

"I commiserate with my brother, Prof. Babagana Zulum, and the people of Borno State over the devastating flood in the State, which has resulted in humanitarian crisis of high magnitude.

"The Government and the people of Ogun State are with Borno on this period of agony and we shall continue to pray for them," the statement read.

We'll stop arbitrary fare hikes in Ogun, transport union leaders vow after Abiodun's intervention

 

Transport union leaders in Ogun State have promised to collaborate with the state government in its efforts to minimize the rise in transportation fares as a result of the recent increase in pump prices of fuel.

The promise was the outcome of a meeting between the Gateway State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, CON, and the union leaders on Monday, regarding the need to be humane with transport fares in the state.

The Chairman of the Ogun State Park Management Scheme (OGSPAM), Alhaji Akeem Bodunrin, while speaking to newsmen at the Panseke Motor Park in Abeokuta South Local Government, stated that they will comply and cooperate with Governor Abiodun on his desire to ensure that citizens of the state are not burdened by exorbitant transport fares as a result of the high cost of fuel.

Alhaji Bodunrin also noted that the union had not increased the cost of union tickets in order to make things easier for their members, adding that it was optimistic that the cost of fuel would eventually reduce with the emergence of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses and e-bikes.

"We came to speak with our drivers and union on how best to be humane with transport fares, and we have seen that the increment in transport fares isn't much. No one has increased union tickets; the high cost of fuel is still the major issue. However, we promise to comply and cooperate with our Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, on his quest to make life meaningful for the people of the state," he said.

Also speaking at the park, the state chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Alhaji Mustapha Ismail, implored the people of the state to be patient with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He stated that, as a union in the state, they will continue to look after the welfare of their passengers.

Alhaji Ismail also noted that the cost of transporting goods, services, and people will eventually decrease very soon with the expected release of 100 CNG-enabled buses by the state government and another 20 by the Federal Government next week.

"Look at our Governor; he has given us Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses and E-mobility bikes to help with the high cost of fuel. What determines price is the distance and fuel consumption. By the time we take delivery of the 100 CNG-enabled buses promised by Governor Dapo Abiodun, our reliance on fuel will definitely reduce. We urge our people to be patient with us," he said.

The State Chairman of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Alhaji Titilayo Akibu, commended Governor Abiodun for his strides in revolutionizing the transport sector in the state with the introduction of CNG-enabled buses and E-bikes.

He stated that when the unions eventually take ownership of the CNG buses, the cost of transportation in the state will reduce drastically.

The National President of the Amalgamated Commercial Motorcycle Owners Association of Nigeria (ACOMORAN), Alhaji Samsudeen, promised that they will support the vision and mission of Governor Abiodun.

Apelogun, while noting that the exchange rate has also affected the cost of motorcycles and tricycles in the country, expressed their belief that the economic policies of President Bola Ahmed, when fully in operation, would help bring down the costs of fuel, motorcycles, and tricycles.

On his part, the State Chairman of the Articulate Motorcycle Owners and Riders Association of Nigeria (AMORAN), Otunba Taofeek Sokoya, noted that the E-bikes have brought about a new regime of transport fares for motorcycle subscribers in the state.

Otunba Sokoya called on the people of the state and traders to help the government by introducing a friendly price regime in their various business endeavors.

Sokoya also commended Governor Abiodun for the e-bikes, noting that the union, which has been able to sell about 55 of the bikes given to them, is craving for more as more people are now showing interest.

"Our members are loyal, and they will understand us when we tell them to reduce the cost of transport fares. We, as a union, will also give them something in return too. We must help our Governor to succeed because he has done well for us," he said.

Be Good Ambassadors Of Ogun State, Gov. Abiodun Enjoin Ogun Athletes For National Youth Games

 As the 8th edition of National Youth Games kicks off on Wednesday, the Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun has charged officials and coaches of the state contingent to ensure maximum protection of their athletes.

Governor Abiodun who was represented by the  Commissioner for Sports Development, gave the charge on Tuesday while addressing the athletes and officials representing the state at the National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State.

Over 300 athletes and officials departed the Alake Sports Centre, Ijeja, Abeokuta.

Abiodun enjoined the coaches and officials to ensure the eligibility of all athletes to avoid disqualification of the athletes, which will be an embarrassment to the state.

He, therefore, appealed to the athletes to give their best at the games and be vigilant and cautious of their environment.

He assured them of the state government support during and after the games.

"I want to appeal to you to take care of the athletes and ensure their maximum security. You know, Delta is a different environment, and many of the athletes are teenagers who may not be able to find their way around, so ensure you monitor them and guarantee their safety at all times.

"Also, ensure the eligibility of all athletes to avoid disqualification of any of the athletes which will be an embarrassment to the state. The athletes should also give their best at the games and be vigilant and cautious of their environment.

"I want to assure you of the state government support during and after the games. We are confident that Team Ogun will make the state proud and showcase the talent and dedication of our young athletes."

Team Ogun contingent will compete in an impressive 28 sports, showcasing their skills and talents in Boxing, Cricket, cycling, darts, gymnastics, handball, swimming, rugby, scrabble, shooting, squash, tennis, Abula, badminton, para table tennis, table tennis, athletics, chess, Ayo Olopon, ane Judo.

Others are Deaf athletics, para athletics, karate, kung-fu, wrestling, and kickboxing.

Fuel Increase: Governor Abiodun Warns Against Fare Exploitation

The Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun has warned transporters in the state against exploiting members of the public as a result of the recent hike in the prices of fuel.

He also announced that his administration would make available 100 brand new 18-seater Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses for the use of transporters in the state to cushion the effect of the hike.

The Governor, who made this known in his office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, in a meeting with transport unions on how to ensure fair transportation pricing in the state, also said that the Federal Government would make available 20 CNG-enabled buses and 500 conversion kits to the state government during the week.

Prince Abiodun also announced the inauguration of an enforcement committee, comprising the State Police Commissioner, his counterpart in the Department of State Security Service (DSS), the Traffic Compliance Agency (TRACE), and heads of transport unions, as well as representatives from the Ministries of Transportation and Trade and Investment.

He further "The meeting was called because of events over the last week, including fuel scarcity, which is already abating, and the associated increase in the pump price of the product".

Prince Abiodun noted that there has always been an astronomical rise in transport fares anytime there is a slight adjustment in the pump prices of fuel.

According to him, the federal government, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is not unmindful of the impact of the recent hike in the pump price, adding that the government is putting in place measures to lessen the impact on the people.

"The plans that we have as a state government, our plans are to, in the first instance, make 100 buses—100 18-seater buses—available to our transport unions. These will be 100 brand new CNG buses, and these buses will be brand buses, not no-name buses. We are talking about Toyota Hiace buses that we will give to you under a purchase agreement.

"We will make them available to you, and you can pay in installments over a period of time. You have demonstrated commitment and seriousness, and we are confident that when we give you these buses, you will utilize them responsibly and pay back on time.

"The Federal Government has also started an Energy Transition Program through the Presidential CNG initiative, and I can confirm to you that the Presidency has confirmed that they are making 20 buses available to Ogun State in the first instance—20 CNG buses. We will be getting those buses in the next week.

"They are also making 500 CNG conversion kits available to Ogun State for the immediate conversion of vehicles to CNG-enabled.

"I have been assured that the conversion kits, which is the first batch of 500, will reach us in the next five days. You know that we have a conversion center in Ogun State. We are a major conversion center for the Southwest, and we will begin the conversion of vehicles in accordance with how we agree in terms of scheduling who will come first and what vehicles we will begin to convert," he said.

Governor Abiodun, while disclosing that the Federal Government is gradually leaving the business of sales and distribution of petroleum products to the private sector, noted that there was no need for transporters to increase transport fares by over 1000% when the price of PMS was just increased by 30%.

"We've seen in the past that when there is a change in pump prices by maybe 10%, we have noticed that our transporters also naturally increase fares because the cost of their operational equipment—be it motorcycles, tricycles, trucks, or buses—is impacted.

"What we've noticed is that when there is a change in the pricing of petroleum products by 10% to 20%, the impact that we see play out at times is like 2000%, and we want to dialogue to ensure the people are not stretched.

"The change in price is about 25% or 30%, so if pump prices have changed by like 25% to 30%, we should not see a difference in transport fares that is more than 25% or 30%," he said.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Engr. Gbenga Dairo, while reminding transporters that fuel is just a component of their transportation cost, urged them to do all within their power to ensure that the people of the state are not over-stretched.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Abiodun Alamutu, on his part, disclosed that the increase in PMS isn't such that should warrant the remarkable increase in the cost of transportation and called on transporters in the state to look at the possibility of having a more friendly transport fare regime.

Speaking on behalf of the transport heads, the National President of the Amalgamated Commercial Motorcycle Owners Association of Nigeria (ACOMORAN), Prince Samsudeen Apelogun, commended Governor Abiodun for revolutionizing the transport sector with the establishment of the Ministry of Transportation and the introduction of the E-mobility program.

He promised to call the stakeholders together and come up with a more friendly transport fare that is within their control.

South East Development Commission: Rt Hon Ben Kalu's Masterstroke

Fifty five years after the civil war, the lingering effects of the war is still visible among the Igbo. Ndigbo being the worst hit of the civil war, still bear scars from the war,with ongoing displacement, poverty, trauma, environmental degradation, security concerns, infrastructural deficit and marginalization.

At one time or the other, past Nigerian presidents made varying efforts to address the negative effects of the civil war on the Igbo people, but they all left limited impact.

The most striking was the 3R sophistry by General Yakubu Gown in January 1970. Gowon had assured the world that there would be Reconciliation, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction (3R), of the Igbo land,as a result of the war ravages, but 54 years after, the South East has witnessed the direct opposite of the 3Rs, even in exponential proportion.

In a similar move, General Olusegun Obasanjo, established the South East Development Initiative(SEDI), to address regional development challenges, but the challenges still persisted.

Alhaji Shehu Shagari made a corresponding effort in his launching of the Presidential Task Force on Rehabilitation and Reconstruction, for the sole purpose of addressing the civil war's effects, but the impact was small scaled,due to his short tenure in office.

Other efforts by Gen Ibrahim Babangida,spanned across the introduction of the National Commission for Refugees,Displaced Persons and Rehabilitation to confront the plight of war-affected communities.

Gen Sabi Abacha, came up with the National Council on Rehabilitation and Reconstruction, while President Good luck Ebele Jonathan, launched the Presidential Committee on Dialogue and Peace in the Niger Delta, which included initiatives for the South East. He also established the Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, to promote education in the region.

President Muhammadu Buhari in his own dimension to tackle the region's infrastructure deficit, began the construction of the second Niger bridge, the Enugu-Portharcourt Expressway and also, formed the Presidential Committee on South East Initiative (PCSEI), to handle the regional development challenges.

While these attempts were aimed to grapple with the negative effects of the civil war, they have been criticized for being inadequate,slow paced or politicized. The South East region still demands sustained attention and investment to fully handle the effects of the civil war. These were the pitfalls of past efforts to reposition the region.

None of the struggle by past national leaders could actualize the setting up of a South East Development Commission(SEDC), that will solely tackle head on the numerous challenges facing Ndigbo from education,healthcare, marginalization, security, infrastructure, and others.

Several Igbo leaders had equally attempted to bring the South East Development Commission Bill to Law, but Rt Hon Benjamin Kalu's efforts remained phenomenon. 

Let me quickly give an overview of the actions of some of our Igbo representatives in actualizing this course,so you could appreciate better, the leadership excellence of the current Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Senator Ike Ekweremadu in 2015, sponsored a Bill similar to the SEDC, but it didn't pass the second reading. Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe in 2017, introduced a Bill,but it stalled,due to lack of support. Governor Dave Umahi in 2018, advocated for a South East Development Commission,but his efforts were met with limited success. In 2019, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the highest socio-cultural organization in Igbo land, went a step higher in pushing for the actualization of SEDC, but it did not gain traction.

Rt Hon Benjamin Kalu in 2020, rewrote history, by successfully sponsoring the SEDC Bill which passed the second reading and eventually passed into Law in 2024. This can only be likened to GRACE.

Interestingly, the passage of the South East Development Commission Bill to Law, marks a significant milestone in the quest for a regional development and growth. The ground breaking legislation sponsored by the indefatigable number 6 citizen of the country,is a testament to his unwavering commitment to the welfare ane progress of the region. The combination of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Deputy Speaker,Rt Hon Benjamin Kalu, broke the over 54 years jinx with the SEDC Law.

President Tinubu has shown a major departure from the Buhari's regime, by signing the SEDC Bill into Law. This further shows his intention about the development of the South East region and his believe in building the nation in the fulcrum of fairness, equity and unity, hence his commitment to ensuring equitable development, inclusive governance,and the provision of qualitative services to all Nigerians, no matter where they reside,while knitting more tightly together the national fabric.

Like the North East Development Commission (NEDC), which brought tremendous transformation in the North East, especially on the area of humanitarian support (where Internally Displaced Persons and victims of insurgency were aided), education/healthcare support(schools and healthcare facilities are being built and upgraded), economic empowerment; through skills training, entrepreneurship support and job creations and initiatives. Environmental remediation of areas in the region suffering ecological issue, pollution,among other interventions, the South East Development Commission will facilitate the development of critical infrastructure such as roads,bridges and public buildings in the South East region. The commission can implement policies and programs to boost economic growth, create jobs, and provide access to credit facilities for entrepreneurs and small businesses. Under education and healthcare, the SEDC can invest in education and healthcare infrastructure, improving access to quality education abd medical care. 

SEDC will address environmental degradation by cleaning up pollution,rehabilitating damaged ecosystems, and promoting sustainable practices.The commission will ensure Ndigbo have a stronger voice in national politics and decision-making processes.

 It can promote and preserve Igbo language and culture, collaborating with security agencies to address insecurity challenges in the region, manage special intervention funds to address specific regional challenges.

The South East Development Commission can foster economic integration and cooperation among southeastern states, addressing historical injustices and lingering issues from the civil war, such as, rehabilitation of war-affected areas and compensation for victims.

While past efforts to reintegrate the Igbo people met minimal result, the SEDC which covers the five eastern states of Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo, would go a long way to assuage the feelings of the Igbo with respect to the reconstruction and rehabilitation of roads, houses and other infrastructural damages suffered by the region, as well as,tackle ecological problems and other related environmental or development challenges in the region.

However, by addressing these issues, the SEDC would help to bridge the developmental gap, promote economic growth, and improve the overall well-being of Ndigbo.

The key point of discussion is that the South East Development Commission, stands out from previous initiatives, as it incorporates vital elements that guarantee its long-term viability and success,such as:

*Legislative Backing:The commission is legislatively backed, giving it a strong legal foundation and authority to operate.

*Structured approach: SEDC has a clear structure, mandate, and funding mechanism, ensuring a systematic approach to development.

*Regional focus:The commission is specifically focused on the South East region, addressing its unique challenges and needs.

*Inclusive representation: It has a board comprising representatives from each South East state, ensuring diverse perspectives and regional buy-in.

*Comprehensive scope: The commission's mandate covers various aspects, including infrastructure, education, healthcare, and economic development.

*Sustained commitment:SEDC is designed to be a long-term initiative, ensuring consistent effort and progress.

*Community engagement:It encourages community participation and ownership, fostering grassroots support and inclusivity.

*Accountability mechanisms:It has built-in accountability mechanisms, ensuring transparency and effective use of resources.

Though past efforts, while well-intentioned, often lacked one or more of these elements, limiting their impact and sustainability. The SEDC law addresses these gaps, providing a robust framework for meaningful reintegration and development.

At this juncture, it won't be out of place if I say that Rt Hon Benjamin Kalu is not playing politics of rice and wrappers, but diving into the mainstream of governance, which goes beyond just touching the lives of an individual or group of people. Myopic critics would seek for mere empowerment for a set of people, but a strategic thinker, seeks for lasting avenues that could create endless opportunities for the entire region. He has created a platform for coordinated development, empowering the region to unlock its vast potential. "What no past Igbo leader could ever achieve, Ben Kalu broke the jinx".

He made a historic achievement that can positively impact the lives of millions, leaving a lasting legacy. He prioritized the region's interest over his personal gain and has established a precedent for future leaders to follow, encouraging them to prioritize regional development.

BOK as he is fondly called by friends, has demonstrated foresight and understanding of the needs of his region with an unwavering commitment,which showed dedication and perseverance in pushing for the Bill's passage,despite potential obstacles.

This goes ahead to remind me of the words of Zig Ziglar that says,"With hardwork and determination,you can achieve anything you set your mind to".

His suave, assertive, sagacious, outspoken and visionary dispositions were highpoints in achieving the South East Development Commission and they remained a very inspiring and veritable source of hope for Ndigbo. "Indeed, Rt Hon Benjamin Kalu,is a beacon of hope and a pillar of transformation for the South East region".

The South East Development Commission, a long-awaited initiative decades in the making, was finally brought to fruition by Rt Hon Benjamin Kalu and his team.
