BenKalu Network Joins Campaign to Avert Protests in Nigeria, Sensitizes Youths on Patriotism

The BenKalu Intellectuals Network (BIN), a think tank of young intellectuals, has launched a nationwide campaign to de-escalate the growing feeling of disunity, hatred, and animosity in the country.

In a statement signed by its intellectual leader, Comrade Benedict Aguele, the group expressed commitment to building honest and patriotic leaders based on the philosophy of its mentor, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu.

While admitting that frustrations are high, and emotions are running deep due to the economic hardship, Aguele added that protests and violence are not the solution. 

The group, therefore, said it is committed to supporting the laudable reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration which are geared towards building a more prosperous and equitable society. 

The BenKalu Network said it has met with over 1,000 groups in the last one week and all have assured that it will not protest against the administration. 

Aguele said rather, the groups will work closely with leaders of thoughts across board to see to the implementation of laudable reforms.

"As a network of young thinkers, we recognize the importance of peace and progress in achieving our collective goals," Aguele said. 

"We have embarked on a mission to sensitize young Nigerians on the need to prioritize patriotism and national unity above personal interests.

"Our methods include social media campaigns, workshops, seminars, and community outreach programs.

"In light of the current economic challenges facing our nation, we understand that frustrations are high, and emotions are running deep.

"However, we strongly believe that protests and violence are not the solutions to our problems. Instead, we should channel our energies towards constructive engagement, dialogue, and collaboration with the government."

The group, therefore, urged all Nigerians, especially the youth, to support the government and refrain from participating in any form of protest.

Aguele added: "Let us work together to build a more prosperous and peaceful Nigeria.

"Patriotism is the foundation of our campaign, as we believe that love for our country should be the guiding principle of our actions.

"This means that every decision we make and every step we take should be motivated by a desire to promote the welfare and prosperity of Nigeria and its people.

Nigerian Tech Community Withdraws From Nationwide Protest, Applauds NCC Boss

After careful consideration and deliberation in Lagos, some tech entrepreneurs said they have decided to withdraw from the proposed August 1 nationwide protest.

Despite the current economic hardship affecting even the tech ecosystem, the Nigerian Tech Community (NTC) believes that protests do not provide solutions to the nation's challenges.

A statement signed by its President-General, Benedict Aguele, said the EVC/CEO of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) Dr Aminu Maida was instrumental in this turnaround. 

Moreover, Aguele expressed concerns that protests of this magnitude could be funded by foreign interests, which would have far-reaching implications for the tech world.

"The tech community is aware of the difficulties faced by Nigerians, but we also recognise that protests can disrupt the fragile economic progress made so far," he said. 

"We cannot afford to compromise the stability of our nation, especially when it comes to the tech sector, which is a critical driver of growth. The effects of violence on protests in our sector can be far-reaching and devastating.

"When protests turn violent, they can disrupt the fragile infrastructure that underpins our digital economy. Data centers, network infrastructure, and other critical tech assets can be damaged or destroyed, leading to widespread outages and disruptions to essential services.

"This can have a ripple effect throughout the economy, impacting businesses, governments, and individuals who rely on these services. Furthermore, violence can also deter investors and innovators from engaging with the tech sector, stifling growth and development.

"In addition, violence can also damage Nigeria's reputation as a hub for tech innovation and investment, making it harder to attract talent, capital, and partnerships.

"By avoiding protests and promoting peaceful dialogue, however, we can protect the tech sector's potential to drive growth, create jobs, and improve lives."

Nigerians In UK Accuse Minister of Interior Bunmi Ojo Of Unwholesome Practice Over Passport Acquisition

Nigerians in the UK have been voicing their displeasure over the newly launched fast tracking device in the acquisition of passport by the Honorable Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo which they claim is exploitative.

It is alleged that the officials of Nigeria House in that part of Europe has through a communique, introduced a mandatory fee of over three hundred dollars to be paid in the course of their passport applications. 

Many Nigerians in the UK woke up to what they termed as another selective self-serving scheme when they realized that, that high fee has put in place in the procurement of their international passport.

According to them, there wouldn’t have been any worry, if the acquisition of passports became easy like the minister promised when he was appointed which many have commended both in Nigeria and other countries including the United Kingdom.

Surprisingly, getting a passport in the UK takes up to four months or more which in a way forces people to queue massively behind the new scheme of paying for fast tracking the process.

What many displeased Nigerians are saying is that they are not happy with the minister who could have made the process seamless instead of the newly introduced fast tracking method. Moreover, they are alleging that the company is saddled with the collection of the monies of the new scheme, NEW NETWORK SOLUTIONS, may be a proxy for the leadership of the ministry. 

Several questions have been directed to DSI Bashir Aminu, the Attache at the Nigeria High Commission in the UK, but he has refused to give cogent reasons for the delay in acquisition and the new scheme.

The Attache, who is fondly called ‘In Coming’ by many in the Nigerian House because of his ambition to be Comptroller General of Immigration in Nigeria we gathered was hailed by many for clearing passport backlogs , but they could not understand why they are now creating the problem of artificial scarcity, which they feel could be for their gain.

They are however calling on the good government of President Bola Tinubu to look into the matter before it proceeds from bad to worse.

Paralympics 2024: Soname Donates 25m To PCN

 

The Chairman ,Remo Stars Football Club,Hon.Kunle Soname has donated the sum of twenty five million naira to the Paralympics Committee Nigeria(PCN).

The financial support was meant to prepare and aids the athletes  ahead of the forthcoming Paralympics holding in Paris.

Team Nigeria will participate in four events at the games which will kick start on the 28th August to 10th September in Paris.

The events are:Para table tennis,badminton,para athletics and para powerlifting.

The CEO ValueJet while making the donation over the week during his investiture as the patron of the committee said"the money was meant to support and prepare the athletes for the game.We shall continue to support our special athletes in order for them to excel at various games and I am optimistic that their participation at the Paris 24 will not be a difference".

Soname ,who expressed appreciation to the leadership of PCN for deeming it fit to making him the Patron promised to always be available whenever his assistance is required.

Speaking,the PCN president Sunday Odebode informed that the choice of Soname was a well deserved one as he has always been supporting the special athletes even before being made the patron and urged him not relent in his effort.

National Sports Festival: Ogun Govt To Scout For Players At ValueJet SWAN Security Cup

 No Fewer than seven security agencies will feature in this year's edition of ValueJet/SWAN Security Cup organized by the Ogun state chapter of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN).

SWAN Security Cup is a football competition organized to foster unity among all security agencies in Ogun state since 2021.

The defending champions, Police Machine were drawn in Group A, to play against the tough side, Nigeria Customs Service, Ogun State Fire Service and debutants, Federal Road Safety Corps.

In Group B of the competition, Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), last year's finalists, NSCDC and debutants, Economic and Financial Crime Commissions (EFCC) in preliminary round of matches beginning from Thursday August 1, 2024.

Abiodun Mourns Senator Ubah, Says Death Is Great Loss

 

The Chairman of the Southern Governors' Forum (SGF) and Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, CON, has described the death of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, CON, as shocking and a great loss to the country

Governor Abiodun, in a condolence message to the people and government of Anambra State on the demise of the lawmaker, coming just few hours after that of the President-General of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu has left a great void that will be difficult to fill.

The Senator, representing Anambra South Senatorial District, reportedly died in London on Saturday.

The SGF Chairman described Senator Ubah as a self-made man, a politician, business mogul, and philanthropist, who contributed his own quota to the development of the nation.

He said the deceased as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Capital Oil was a major player in the oil industry while also contributing to the upliftment of the needy through his Ifeanyi Ubah Foundation.

He said: Today, we mourn the loss a visionary leader and a true advocate for the people of Anambra State and Nigeria.

"Senator Ifeanyi Ubah's sudden demise has left a void that will be difficult to fill. His untimely departure is not only a loss for his family and loved ones but also for the entire state and the nation as a whole. CHOLERA,OGUN TO COLLABORATE WITH RELIGIOUS CAMPS ON WASTE MANAGEMENT

As parts of its continued efforts at institutionizing best waste management practices in the state which will forestall outbreak on diseases  especially cholera, the Ogun State Waste Management Authority,OGWAMA says it will collaborate with all religious camps in Gateway the state.

The Special Adviser to the Governor Ogun State Waste Management Authority OGWAMA,Hon Abayomi Semako Hunye stated this when he lead the management team of the Authority on a visit to the Redeemed Christian Church of God RCCG Camp along the Lagos - Ibadan Expressway to inspect the waste management facilities of the camp.                    

Hunye said since the camp and many others  across the state host thousands of people who are either residents or visitors,there is the need for OGWAMA to collaborate with them ,so as to get their waste management practice right as any lapse can lead to serious outbreak especially water borne diseases such as cholera which will spread quickly to residents of the state who daily, weekly and  monthly visit the camp for supplications, businesses or corporate transactions.

"Part of the collaboration will be to expose their environmental health management teams to the best waste management practices which will safeguard the immediate and general environment as well as public health".

He therefore called on various camp grounds across the state to cooperate with the Ogun State Waste Management Authority officials who will be visiting them to inspect their waste management facilities so that they will get it right going forward and save the state of any outbreak of diseases emanating from improper waste management.

Responding,the National Overseer orf the Redeemed Christian Church of God RCCG, Pastor Sunday Akande  said the global church has giving waste management and environmental sector the attentions they deserve as all its facilities are top notch and can be compared to any of its contemporary worldwide.

While praying for good health of all the residents of Ogun state where the camp is situated , Pastor Akande said the church is open to new ideas in waste and environmental management as the world is not static adding that the church will collaborate with OGWAMA in its determination at entrenching proper waste and environmental management in all religious camps  across the state for the well-being of visitors and inhabitants of various camps.

Ibara Regeneration Scheme: You Can't Resell Your Land, Ogun Govt Tells Allottees

 

Ogun State Government has warned allotees of the Ibara Regeneration Scheme not to sell their land once allocated as doing so would defeat the purpose of the scheme.

Speaking at a Stakeholders' meeting in Abeokuta on Saturday, the Commissioner for Housing,  Jagunmolu Jamiu Omoniyi, said the state government intends to give the state a world-class new city that would be the pride of all.

According to him, the plan of the state government is to recreate Banana Island or Parkview Estates in the Gateway State with the Ibara scheme as the starting point.

He said that the present administration's vision is to revolutionize housing in the state, adding that the caveat attached to the allocation mandate allottees to start construction immediately while any attempt to resell the land would be met with immediate revocation.

He said: "This administration intends to create another estate that will be better than Banana Island. We want to create another Abeokuta where our sons and daughters who live abroad, Lagos or Abuja, can find a place they can call their own instead of sleeping in hotels whenever they visit.

"The agreement is that you will not buy the property for speculative purposes. We will not allow anyone to buy and resell those plots. As a matter of fact, 60 days from today, you must start developing your plot. If you don't, there is an agreement under oath that everyone has signed to. We will revoke those plots no matter how highly placed you are. If you deviate from the agreement, we will go ahead and revoke and reallocate to another person."

Giving a background of the Ibara Estate, Omoniyi said a total of 232 bungalows made up of two and three bedrooms were built at the creation of Ogun State to provide accommodation to civil servants who were moved from Ibadan, noting that the location was chosen because of its closeness to Oke-Ilewo, where the state secretariat located as at then. 

He further massive development has taken place in Government Reservation Areas in the States that were part of the old western region except Ibara GRA, which is still underdeveloped.

"By not developing this estate, we deny ourselves the value that this land brings to our state. Ibara Estate sits on 32 hectares of land valued at over N20 billion in today's value and this is what the state government has decided to turn into a world class city that this generation can be proud to associate with.

"We realized that many people have bought into the GRA scheme since the 1970s, but what we have also realized is the fact that rather than the value to  go up, the value remains stagnant because there are no new development, no innovation and this is de-marketing your assets. But with the little intervention we have done in the last three months, I'm sure those of you who have assets here know that the value would have been more than double.

"A plot of land that was barely sold for about N25 million, now goes for about N50million-N60million," the commissioner added.

He appreciated those who keyed into the scheme, adding that though many tried to pull the administration down with flimsy write ups and campaign of calumny, the Prince Dapo Abiodun-led administration remained undaunted in seeing that its vision for housing come to pass 

Some of the housing projects across the state, Hon. Omoniyi noted have provided employment opportunities for close to 50,000 people,  just as the ongoing Ibara Regeneration Scheme has offered jobs to about 160 artisans in various fields.

The commissioner said the project was divided into two clusters with the first being 35 units duplexes of five bedrooms with a two bedroom boy quarters, while land is being allocated to subscribers of the second cluster to build with specification.

According to him, subscribers  apart from being allocated their plots, would also be given survey sheets and their maps as promised by the government, as a total of 95 applicants who applied were given their allocation.

Special Adviser to the governor on Physical Planning and Enforcement, Tpl. Tunde Olugbewesa, in his remarks  said the state has huge land mass for both investors and developers, calling on those who buy more than one acre of land to carry out proper layout on their property.

Also speaking, the Osi of Egbaland, Chief Bode Mustapha, praised Governor Abiodun for taking the initiative to give Abeokuta a new lease of life, saying structures at the old Ibara housing estate was an eyesore unbefitting of a state capital.

Also speaking, the Vice Chairman, Egba Economic Submit, Dr. Gbenga Adeoye called for the tightening of security in the Ibara GRA to prevent hoodlums from attacking residents.

Ogun Woos Foreign, Domestic Investors to Boost Development

 

Ogun State Government under administration of Prince Dapo Abiodun, CON, has invested massively in the security architecture by providing security agencies with modern crime-fighting tools to secure lives and properties in the State, the state Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Dapo Okubadejo, said on Friday.

Okubadejo, who is also Chief Economic Adviser (CEA) to Governor Dapo Abiodun, stated this in Abeokuta, the state capital, on Friday, while addressing the South Africa-Nigeria Business Chamber, in an investment webinar, with the theme: "Navigating The Investment Landscape In Ogun State, Nigeria: Key Sectors and Growth Areas."

According to him, the State Government has created a conducive business environment for both local and international investors to operate in the State.

The Economic Adviser noted that Gateway State has over 16,000 square kilometers of land mass, of which about 65 percent is suitable for agriculture, noting that commercial farmers could take advantage of the all-year farming and the conducive climate to go into food or cash crops cultivation.

Speaking on the business opportunities that abound in the State, Okubadejo said sectors like infrastructure, education, real estate, transportation and ICT were open for investment, adding that with international border and its closeness to the nation's economic capital, Lagos, Ogun State provides the best destination of choice for Investors.

He said: "In the area of solid minerals, Ogun State is probably number one in the country as we have several minerals from limestone to bitumen, sulphate, granite and clay, among others. 

"Of all these minerals, only a few are currently being exploited and developed and, of course, the most developed is the limestone where we have the largest cement companies in the country.

"We have a strong relationship with the Federal Government to be able to embark on a joint venture or partnership with any foreign investor that is interested in developing out mineral opportunities."

He said the state government has opened up business clusters and has also built an aerotropolis, not just as a processing zone, but provided with greenhouse, residential, hospitality business which is opened for investors.

Okubadejo also said opportunities abound in the power sector whereby investors could go into solar panel production, independent power generation and distribution, just as he noted that the government is working on Free Trade Zones at Olokola, Ogun Waterside and a Dry Port at Kajola, Abeokuta.

While speaking on the steps taken to ensure the ease-of-doing-business in the State, the commissioner said an investment facilitation agency has been set up to provide one-stop solution, including assisting with inquiries, providing detailed information on investment opportunities, guiding investors through regulatory requirements, to ensure business operations.

Okubadejo, while assuring of adequate manpower as a result of numerous higher institutions of higher learning in the state, said investors interested in doing business would benefit from tax waivers, rebate and other incentives that benefit their investments.

Also speaking, Commissioner for Transportation, Engr. Gbenga Dairo, said the state government had put in place a multimodal transportation plan that incorporated road, rail, sea, adding that investors are encouraged to invest in rail, airport management and the use of technology as an enforcement tool in the transportation sector.

Dairo also stressed the need for investors to look into the tourism sector of the state economy as it provides a good opportunity.

Also speaking, Commissioner for Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr. Adebola Sofela, said a lot had been done on land administration just as the State has invested in security for conducive business environment.

He said a lot has been done to expose the 'adire' fabric to the outside world, noting that more could be achieved if modern technology is used in producing the fabrics.

Aviation Minister Keyamo Gets Thumbs Up for Improved Standard At Airport's

The Agenda for Good Governance in Nigeria (AGGN) has applauded the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo for the significant improvements in the nation's airports.

The group said following an independent tour of the airports, it noticed first-hand that the airports have witnessed considerable upgrades in infrastructure development.

A statement by its President, Dr Bashir Mohammed said the proposed upgrade of the Margaret Ekpo International Airport Calabar, Osubi Airport, and Ibadan Airport, among others are proofs. 

Mohammed said these efforts have enhanced the safety of passengers and the community, demonstrating the minister's commitment to providing world-class facilities that meet international standards.

“We commend the minister and regulatory agencies for their efforts to sustain the tempo of improvement,” he added. 

“Key initiatives launched between 2023 and 2024 have bolstered aviation security, including technology upgrades, training programs, and manpower recruitment efforts. 

“The ministry has also inaugurated a specialized Aviation Security (AVSEC) unit, the Special Force, to enhance security measures across the nation's airports.

“The minister's emphasis on Public-Private Partnership (PPP) has improved passengers' experiences, as seen in the remodelling of the passenger security checkpoint at the Lagos Airport. 

“Challenges such as touting, extortion, and illicit activities are fading, showcasing a renewed commitment to ensuring a safe and welcoming arrival experience for all visitors. 

“Additionally, the minister's efforts have led to improved airline services, increased efficiency, and reduced wait times. 

“The upgrade of airport facilities has also created jobs and stimulated local economic growth. We applaud the minister's commitment to transparency and accountability, ensuring that resources are utilized effectively to benefit the nation.

ABEOKUTA- The Nigeria Union of Pensioners,(NUP) Ogun state council have commended the state governor, Dapo Abiodun on the release of additional two billion naira to offset the gratuity payments of pensioners in the state. 

In a press statement signed by the chairman, Comrade W. O Oloyede and Secretary, Comrade Bola Lawal on behalf of the executive Council, a copy made available to our reporter, the pensioners describe the payment as a  life saver. 

Oloyede in the release however urged governor Abiodun to further approve the request for the release of the 'long awaited' consequential increase in the pensions along with the impending new minimum wage increase. 

"The executive Council and the entire membership of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, hereby express deep and sincere appreciation to our lovely, loving and ever caring father, leader and pensioners-friendly executive governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun for your kind hearted compassion at releasing another sum of N2Billion Naira to us. This is meant to drastically reduce the backlog of owned gratuities. 

"We are also eternally grateful to Your Excellency for the regular and prompt payment of monthly pensions which is paid as at when due. 

" In furtherance of our major demands, we the entire membership of NUP, here again make use of this opportunity to passionately appeal and make request for the approval and release of the long awaited consequential increase in pensions along with the impending new wage increase. 

"This is to further increase the economic powers of the vulnerable retiree at the open market, and also offer us the opportunity to live healthy life at the wake of the present ever-soaring inflationary trends, before death comes knocking", the statement reads.

Chairman of the Southern Governors' Forum (SGF) and Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has described the death of the President General of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, as a profound loss to the nation.

In a statement on Thursday, Prince Abiodun described the news of the death of the businessman, publisher, and politician as shocking.

The late businessman owned The Champion Newspapers. His business had also grown into a conglomerate of over 20 companies, including Enic Advertising Ltd; Magil Industries Limited; National Post Newspapers; Sunrise Insurance Brokers; Oriental Shipping Lines Limited; Paradise City Hotel, Calabar and Oriental Airlines.

Governor Abiodun said as President General of Ohaneze Ndigbo, the apex socio-cultural organization of the Igbo people, Chief  Iwuanyanwu worked tirelessly to preserve the unity of the country with his various, timely interventions at critical times when contentious issues were raging.

Prince Abiodun said: "I received with shock, the news of the death of the President General of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu. His passing at this critical time when his counselling as an elder statesman is needed is saddening.

"Chief Iwuanyanwu wuanyanwu was a remarkable leader, statesman, and patriot who dedicated his life to promoting the unity, progress, and well-being of the Igbo nation and Nigeria as a whole. 

"His contributions to fostering inter-ethnic harmony, peaceful co-existence, and mutual understanding between the diverse peoples of our country were huge.

"His death is a profound loss not only for the Igbo nation but Nigeria as a whole.

Ogunbote Seals 2-Year Contract Extension With 3SC

 

Technical Adviser of Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) of Ibadan, Gbenga Ogunbote, has officially extended his stay with the Oluyole Warriors.

After weeks of discussion with the management of the club, the Oracle, as the widely traveled tactician' is fondly called,  agreed to renew his contract with the club, in a deal that will see him staying with the club for the next two years.

Speaking after signing the contract extension papers, the former Rangers International, Gateway United, Lobi Stars, Sunshine Stars, defunct Sharks FC of Port Harcourt and Remo Stars' sweat merchant, expressed joy over the development.

"I am thrilled to announce that I have signed  a 2-year contract extension as the head coach of Shooting Stars.

"I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to continue leading this talented group of athletes and I am excited about the future we will build together," said the soft spoken gaffer.

He expressed appreciation to the management of the club,and the fans, expressing the belief that the team will achieve in the coming season.

Abiodun Urges Youth To Embrace Dialogue, Shelve Protest

The Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, CON, has appealed to the youths in the State and the country at large to shelve the planned mass protest nationwide and embrace peace and dialogue.

Prince Abiodun, speaking during an engagement with the coalition of youth organizations in the state, appealed to them to be calm and not to cut the head to cure an headache.

He called on the coalition to always engage with him by putting their burning issues across, urging them to be civil, objective, and constructive.

The Gateway State Governor urges the youth to shelve protest,

"I want to plead with you that yet again there are calls for mass protest across the country, and the first thing that agitates one's mind is, is that the way to present your case to government?

"Is that a way of constructive and objective engagement with government by advertising and planning a protest? Is there something else behind those calling for the protest? Is this another plan by those who have tried their luck and have lost?

"Young men and women, we have no other country than this country. Let me assure you, there is no other country in the world where you can walk freely  like your own country. There is no other place; we have no other country but this.

"If there  are issues, let us discuss them. Let us find a way around them, let us manage them, and let us correct them. Don't let us cut off the head to cure an headache," he said.

The State Governor disclosed that his administration since inception has ensured that the youths were engaged by appointing some vibrant and brilliant ones into government positions.

He added that the state government under his watch also created a job portal and enacted a local content law where a large number of youths in the state have gotten employment opportunities both in the private and the public sectors till date.

Speaking further, Governor Abiodun said that he had to sign an executive order to split the Ministry of Youths and Sports into the Ministries of Sports Development and Youths Development to create an avenue for the proper development of the youth constituency and Sports in the state.

He assured the Youths that the Ministry of Youths Development would soon get its own commissioner, who he said would be young, brilliant, and vibrant.

"I believe that it took us a bit of time to formalize the creation of that ministry. When you create a ministry, you must have a permanent secretary and other paraphernalia of office for it to be a ministry.

"Not having a Commissioner for Youths Development is not deliberate or intensional. I want to promise you that you will get that commissioner and that commissioner will be one who will be able to relate with you and also articulate  the needs of your generation to the cabinet," he added. 

The Governor further stressed  that he was not bordered or concerned about the criticisms and attacks he has faced in the last few weeks on social media, saying tjat he would continue to work towards moving the state forward without being perturbed  by his transducers.

Abiodun, while noting that his administration has done brilliantly well in its developmental agenda, noted that he welcomes objective criticisms at all times.

Earlier, the state chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Comrade Kolawole Soremi and Habeeb White, who is a Royal Youth Ambassador, commended Governor Abiodun for his giant strides in the state, and urged him to appoint a Commissioner for the Ministry of Youths Development in the state.

They commended the governor for his giant strides in the state, adding that youths in the state are ready to give him the maximum support for him to succeed.

Hon. Adebolu reiterates Commitment to Sports Development in Ogun State

The Founder, Irede Foundation, a non-profit Organization, Hon. Hammed Adeniyi Adebolu has reiterated his desire and commitment towards the development of sports at the grassroots level.

Hon. Adebolu stated this when he received executive members of the State Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) at his Oke Ilewo Office, Abeokuta.

Otherwise known as Sekere of Lagos, the Irede Foundation founder who acknowledged the importance of Sports to the social economic development of any nation especially in the area of job creation for the youths in the society, promised to partner with the association in the state to promote grassroots sports.

While appreciating the association for its various laudable programmes geared towards complementing efforts of the state government to develop sports in the state, Hon. Adebolu appealed to the executive members of the association to sustain the tempo, adding that the development of sports required concerted efforts of all.

Hon Adebolu promised to support the association to ensure the success of the forthcoming Valuejet SWAN Security cup competition slated for between First and 15th August, 2024.

"I want to sincerely appreciate your determination and zeal to ensure that sports in the state receive adequate attention through your reportage and various programmes, I will continue to do my best as a Youth to promote sports which over the years have remained a veritable weapon to reduce all forms of social vices in the society".

Earlier, the Ogun State SWAN chairman, Michael-Azeez Ogunsiji, commended Hon. Adebolu for his philanthropic gesture towards empowering the youths.

Ogunsiji noted that his desire to invest in sports would eradicate  social vices among the youths in the state.

The SWAN Chairman reaffirmed the readiness of the association  in partnering the Ogun State government in the discovery of young and vibrant athletes that would replace the ageing ones.

BIDEN DROP US PRESIDENTIAL RACE

 

US President Joe Biden announced Sunday that he was dropping out of his reelection battle with Donald Trump, in a historic move that plunges the already turbulent 2024 White House race into uncharted territory.

"It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve you as president,” the 81-year-old Democrat said in a letter in X, posted while he was recovering from Covid at his beach house in Delaware.

"Biden said he would “speak to the nation later this week in more detail about my decision.”

The Democratic Party is now plunged into chaos and needs to find a new candidate by November’s election, with Vice President Kamala Harris the frontrunner.

Biden bowed out after weeks of pressure that began with a disastrous debate performance that raised fears over his health.

The stunning move makes Biden the first president in US history to pull out so late in an election race, and the first to bow out because of concerns over his mental acuity and health.

Biden spent more than three weeks resisting calls to step down following the shock of the June 27 debate, at one point insisting that only the “Lord Almighty” could convince him to back out.

In a bid to show he was up to the job, he gave a number of interviews and what was billed as a “big boy” press conference in which he took numerous questions, but made further gaffes including calling Harris “Vice President Trump.”

A tide of voices within his own party calling on him to go, starting with donor and actor George Clooney and ending with former president Barack Obama, sealed his fate.

The end finally came shortly after Biden had been diagnosed with COVID-19, forcing him off the campaign trail and into isolation.

Biden’s decision to pull out also caps a tense and chaotic period in the US election, with Trump having survived an assassination attempt at a campaign rally on July 13.

He joins a small club of US presidents who have decided to throw in the towel after just one term, with the last being Lyndon Johnson in 1968 — a year also marked by political turmoil and violence.

Johnson’s replacement as nominee, then-vice president Hubert Humphrey, went on to lose heavily to Richard Nixon.

But Democrats are counting on Harris to fare better, and hoping that she can prevent convicted felon Trump from making a sensational comeback to the Oval Office.

In recent weeks, the Biden campaign has reportedly been quietly carrying out a head-to-head survey of voters measuring how she matched up against Trump.

While Harris struggled to make an impact in her first years in the White House, she has emerged in the last year as a strong performer on the campaign trail on key messages such as abortion rights.

The former prosecutor has also made much of her life story as the first woman in US history to hold the vice presidency, as well as the first person of Black and South Asian origin.

Harris is now set to be nominated at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on August 19 in what promises to be a dramatic moment — and a heartrending one for Biden.

Biden took office in January 2021 pledging to heal the “soul of America” after four turbulent years under Trump and the shock of the January 6, 2021 Capitol assault by his supporters.

Overcoming a reputation for verbal flubs, Barack Obama’s former vice president pushed through a massive Covid recovery plan and a green industry scheme.

US allies welcomed his pledge that “America is back” following Trump’s trampling on international alliances, and his strong support for Ukraine as it battled Russia’s 2022 invasion.

But he faced criticism over the catastrophic US withdrawal from Afghanistan and inflation that meant overstretched Americans ignored otherwise positive economic numbers.

Behind it all were the ongoing concerns about his age with a series of senior moments, including tripping up the stairs to Air Force One and falling off his bike, contributing to the doddery image played up by Republicans.

Ogun State FA Inaugurates Youth Football Committee

The Ogun State Football Association, on Friday, 19th July 2024, inaugurated a 17-man committee to oversee youth football affairs in the state.

After being inaugurated at the MKO Abiola stadium, Abeokuta, the committee swung to action immediately and held its inaugural meeting, where issues on Youth Football development were extensively discussed.

The Chairman Ogun State Football Association, Alhaji Ganiyu Majekodunmi who is also the Chairman of the committee, said that it was pertinent to have a functional committee take charge, in order to further solidify what the Association has commenced.

He added that "This is a call to service, we all know that this is not a money making Association or committee, so we have painstakingly identified those of us that can be of assistance in ensuring that our youth football calendar is strictly adhered to.

"In your various zones, regions and base, use your position and connection to project and assist the committee, and the association at large in order for us to achieve this goal".

Alhaji Majekodunmi who is also an Executive Board Member of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF),  charged the committee to work assiduously in ensuring that talents are discovered in every part of the state, and also monitored and nurtured to stardom.

Alhaji Ganiyu Majekodunmi is the Chairman of the committee, while coach Femi Bamgboye will serve as Vice Chairman, Dr. Bayo Oluwatoki, Coach Victor Agbagu, Mr. Omotunde Adamson, Mr. Oseni Oluwasegun and Prince Adeniyi Adeyinka are members of the committee.

Other members are Alhaji  Hammed Adebayo, Mr. Dauda Ibrahim, Mr. Michael Onikute, Mrs. Agbabiaka Sekinat Mojisola, Engr. Ayodeji Sodrudeen, Mr. Ibrahim Nasiru, Mrs. Olanike Titilayo Lawal, and Mr.Nofiu Abimbola.

Mr. Adeleke John will serve as secretary of the committee, while Mr. Michael-Azeez Ogunsiji is the Media Officer.

Ogun State Set to Register Additional 100,000 Farmers Under OGFIMS

The Ogun State Government has announced plans to register an additional 100,000 farmers under the Ogun State Farmer Information Management System (OGFIMS), bringing the total number of registered farmers to 160,000.

Gateway State Commissioner for Agriculture, Hon. Bolu Owotomo made this known during the OGFIMS workshop on Farmers and Value Chain Actors' registration exercise at the Ogun State Economic Transformation Project (OGSTEP) training hall.

The workshop aimed to train 86 enumerators and supervisors to register and gather information on farmers, thereby enriching the state's database.

Owotomo emphasized the importance of accurate registration, stating that it would assist the government in decision-making and provide opportunities for farmers to enhance their knowledge and capacities on best agricultural practices.

He said the initiative was expected to boost the state's agricultural sector, providing a comprehensive database of farmers and value chain actors and enhancing the state's food security and economic growth.

The State Coordinator, OGSTEP, Mrs. Mosunmola Owo-Odunsi explained that the workshop was designed to onboard enumerators and train them to register farmers and VCAs in the OGFIMS database.

The team lead, Project consultant, OGFIMS, Mr. Lava Kumar, noted that the enumerators would help bring more farmers onto the digital platform, linking them with stakeholders in the agricultural sector, adding  that the platform would serve as a database and repository of information and knowledge for farmers in Ogun State.

Ogun Approves Construction Of Additional Five Roads

The Ogun State Executive Council has approved the construction of five additional roads across the State.

Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Ade Akinsanya dropped the hint on Thursday during a press conference while giving an update on ongoing road constructions in the State.

The five additional roads are Alagbole-Ajuwon, Akute-Ajuwon, Toyin-Giwa Hercules road,  Oke-Aro, all in Ifo Local Government Area in Ogun Central Senatorial District.

Others are Oke-Erinja and Erinja in Yewa South as well as Awokoya road in Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area.

Engr. Akinsanya spoke on the readiness of the state government to continue with the reconstruction of the remaining 17 kilometers Akute-Ijoko road, stating that it would be divided into two phases starting from Akute to Oke Aro where the issue of flooding would be addressed while the next phase starts from Oke Aro to Ijoko.

Giving an update on the Lagos-Ota-Sango-Abeokuta road, the commissioner disclosed that contract for the reconstruction of the road was awarded on the 28 of March by the State Executive Council to Craneburg Construction Company which was accepted by the company in April, with necessary administrative process still ongoing at the federal level, expressing the hope that they would move to site soon.

"The job will be done in phases beginning from Sango to Abeokuta with four gangs working at the same time. Though there are still some paperwork to be done, the governor decided to start the reconstruction of the road to relieve the people of the pain they go through on a daily basis.

"In addition to this being done by the State, the governor has facilitated more projects with the federal government. For example, the Laderin Train Station road phase one. That project is into two phases. From Laderin to the train station with the channelization of storm water to the drainages," he said.

He noted that the governor played a major part in 14 different ongoing projects across the state, like the Ilisan Market road to Babcock as an example.

The commissioner also stated that his ministry is collaborating with the federal government to rehabilitate an additional 21 roads across the state beginning with Ado Odo/Ota, Yewa North and South, as well as Abeokuta North and South.

Akinsanya said: "One of the key projects the governor has played a major role is in the reconstruction of Sango-Atan-Owode-Idi-Iroko road. That project is ongoing. The governor facilitated its commencement as the project has been on paper for so many years.

"We have two bridges along that road, and this will bring relief to the people, especially those at Oju-Ore and the roundabout where there is a major problem. That problem will resolve with a flyover at the location. Then, moving from there to Canaan Land, there will be another bridge, and the road will go all the way to the Idi-Iroko border."

Engr. Akinsanya attributed the cause of damage to roads in the state to the dumping of refuse on drainages and buildings on waterways that result in flooding.

While assuring the citizens that government is taking notes of roads in all the local government areas, the commissioner, however, said criteria would be used in prioritizing them, appealing to the people to exercise patient as government makes efforts to put the roads in good shape.

Food Sufficiency: Southern Governors' Forum To Promote Regional Trade-Abiodun

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, CON, on Thursday said  southern states have decided to promote inter-state and inter-region trade to foster food security and sufficiency.

The governor also disclosed that Ogun State has decided to establish Farmers' Markets across the state to ensure food security.

He spoke when he received in audience the newly constituted Governing Council of the Federal University of Agriculture (FUNAAB), led by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Oba Abdul-Rasheed Ayorinde Olabomi.

Prince Abiodun, who is the chairman of the Southern Governors' Forum (SGF), said that Southern States have no reason not to promote trade among themselves with fertile land and human capacity in the region.

"As a matter of fact, me and my colleagues in the Southern part of Nigeria have met and have said that we have no reason not to promote inter-state or inter-region trade.

"There is no reason why someone from the South East or South South is not buying yam or tomatoes from somebody in the South West. There is no reason why someone from the South West is not buying rice from Ebonyi.

"We should be able to attain food security and sufficiency within our region because we have the human capacity and the necessary arable  land. There is nothing we do not have to ensure we achieve this objective," he said.

Governor Abiodun said that the Farmers' Market would be located at strategic locations across the state, including Asero in Abeokuta and Ogere along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

He also said plans have been concluded to move the Kara cattle market from its present location to Ogere, where the cattle merchants can have access to a good atmosphere.

He continued: "Our Ministry of Agriculture is working on establishing a few things, one of which is the Farmers Market at strategic locations across the state, and I think this is another initiative we can collaborate.

"One will be at Asero in Abeokuta. One will be somewhere around Lagos-Ibadan expressway, which is around the Ogere area, which we have also designated as our livestock and animal husbandry area.

"We are proposing to move the Kara market to somewhere along there where we have land, and we can provide them with additional land for expansion. 

"We believe that with the number of small holder farmers we have in the Gateway State, it will be an advantage to them if we have the farmers' market located in strategic places."

The Gateway State Governor noted that his administration sees agriculture as a way of providing food security, create employment and generate revenue, adding that the Federal University of Agriculture should be at the forefront of championing food security, as the purpose for which it was established.

He also promised to collaborate with the institution in some ways, including cassava production, even as he promised that the Iyana-Camp to Alabata road is already under the radar of his administration.

Earlier, Oba Ayorinde Olabomi, while describing Governor Abiodun as one of the best Governors in the country, called for collaboration with the state government at a time when people were clamouring for food.

The royal father further said that the institution is poised to contribute it's quota to ensure food security in the country, urging the state government to take advantage of the several training programmes,  research and development that the institution has to offer.

The Pro-Chancellor appealed to GovernorAbiodun to assist the institution by reconstructing the Iyana-Camp to Alabata road, which had been destroyed as a result of activities of trucks.

Ogun SWAN Meets OGHA Speaker Elemide, Seeks Implementation Of Sports Commission, Trust Fund

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN, has sought the collaboration of Ogun State House Assembly in the implementation of the Sports Commission Act which was passed by the Assembly in 2019 for the overall development sports in the state.

The State House of Assembly, had in December, passed the State Sports Commission bill, 2019 and State Sports Trust Fund Bill, as part of moves to further boost sporting activities and youth development in the State.

SWAN Chairman, Comrade Michael-Azeez Ogunsiji made the call when he led other members of the executive on a courtesy call to the Speaker, Ogun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide, at the Assembly complex, Oke Mosan, Abeokuta.

Comrade Ogunsiji who noted that the implementation of the bill was needed to promote sports at the grassroots level, commended the Speaker for his efforts in the development of sports in the grassroot, stating that SWAN was committed to partnering the Assembly in replicating the same at the State level.

Responding, the Speaker, Ogun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide described sports as a major instrument for creating job opportunities and engaging the youth in an efforts to reduce restiveness in the society.

Hon. Elemide  who acknowledged the enormous contributions of Sports to the socio economic development of any society if properly harnessed, appealed to Governor Dapo Abiodun to take action on the implementation of the Sports Commission bill.

The Speaker explained that State Government had initiated an executive  bill for the creation of the Sports Commission and that of the Sports Development Trust Funds.

"The bill was an executive bill. I was part of it. I was part of the passage. And we did our own beat. We have passed it. So we only implore our governor to speed up action on it. There must be a reason why the implementation has not started".

He assured SWAN of government's commitment to sports development, saying that the Prince Dapo Abiodun led administration would not relent in giving the best to the teeming youths in the State.

FLOODING PREDICTION,OGUN EMBARK ON FLOOD AND EROSION CONTROL INTERVENTION EXERCISE

 

In its continued efforts at preventing flooding and averting Federal Government's prediction of River Flooding in the State this year, the Ogun State government has embarked on Flood and Erosion Control Intervention Exercise.

The exercise is complementing its annual flood mitigation efforts in various parts of the state which started since the inception of the Prince Dapo Abiodun administration in 2019.

Speaking on the exercise which commenced in various parts of the state days ago, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Flood and Erosion Control,Mr Femi Akinwunmi said the exercise involves the dredging of River and Stream Courses as well as desilting of drainage channels statewide.

According to him those rivers and streams undergoing dredged to avert river flooding in the state include the Opa-Aro River in Isheri, Ifo LGA,Oke Afa Stream in Magboro,Obafemi Owode LGA,Giyanu Stream in Ilase, Ipokia LGA,Sokori River and its tributaries and Labaiwa stream in Abeokuta North and South LGAs.

He said it will soon be the turn of Onibuku Stream in Iju in Ado Odo LGA,Odo Funfun River in Oja Odan in Yewa North LGA,Sensen River in Sagamu LGA and Yemule River in Ijebu -Ode LGA among others lined up to be dredged soon.

Aside from the dredging, Akinwunmi said the state government has also commenced massive  desilting of drainage channels across the state notably in the state capital, Abeokuta, Sango-Ota, Ijebu-ode and Ilishan with other cities and towns are also slated for desilting soon.

"The dredging of these rivers and streams  and desilting of the drainage channels are meant to improve their water- carrying capacities through removal of sand as well as free them from refuse dumped indiscriminately into them which inhibits free flow of rain water that brings about backflows that results into flooding and its unpalatable consequences"

"As a responsible government that cares for the well-being of its residents ,the administration had no choice than to take on this responsibility to avert predicted river flooding in the state this year and free its residents from any of its consequences as raining season should be a blessing to the people and a curse"

He did not forget to equally warn traders in markets and streets who placed planks and makeshift structures on top of drainage channels to remove them forthwith to avoid violating the state environmental laws which might lead to possible prosecution.

The Details Of The Supreme Court Ruling Giving 774 Local Councils Financial Autonomy

 

The Supreme Court ruled on Thursday that all federal funds for local government councils should be paid directly into their accounts. 

Justice Emmanuel Agim, who led a seven-member panel of justices, delivered the judgment in a suit filed by the federal government against the 36 state governors.

According to the judgment, henceforth, no more payments of local government area allocations will be made to state government accounts. The court also prohibited the governors from receiving, tampering with, or withholding funds meant for local governments.

Furthermore, the court barred the governors from dissolving democratically elected officials for local governments and deemed such actions a breach of the 1999 Constitution.

The federal government had approached the Supreme Court with a suit seeking to compel the governors of the 36 federating states to grant full autonomy to local governments in their domains. The suit, marked SC/CV/343/2024, was filed by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), on behalf of the Federal Government.

The Federal Government accused the state governors of gross misconduct and abuse of power in its suit, which was based on 27 grounds. In the originating summons, the FG prayed the Supreme Court to make an order stating that funds standing to the credit of local governments from the Federation Account should be paid directly to the local governments rather than through the state governments.

The justice minister also requested an order restraining governors, their agents, and privies from receiving, spending, or tampering with funds released from the Federation Account for the benefit of local governments when no democratically elected local government system is in place in the states.

Finally, the Federal Government sought an order stopping governors from constituting caretaker committees to run the affairs of local governments, contrary to the constitutionally recognized and guaranteed democratic system.

The Ogun State chapter of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), has announced Valuejet as title sponsor for the 4th SWAN Security Cup tournament.

Chairman, SWAN (Ogun State Chapter), Mr. Michael-Azeez Ogunsiji who confirmed the development, said the foremost airline company, Value Jet Nigeria agreed to be the official sponsor of the annual SWAN Security Cup at a strategic meeting between the company and the association.

Ogunsiji noted that, the continuous collaboration between Value Jet Nigeria and SWAN, shows the deep connection to promote synergy among security agencies, while also promising a competitive tournament ahead. 

He said "We are delighted to announce Valuejet as the official title sponsor of the 4th SWAN Security Cup. Valuejet is a sports-loving brand that adheres to stringent quality standards. 

He promised that "The 2024 SWAN Security Cup will be bigger than what we have done in the past three editions,organisation will be top-notch, while the branding aspect will also hit a new high".

The Valuejet/SWAN Security Cup is an annual event organized by the Ogun State chapter of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, for security agencies in the state.

The Nigeria Police defeated Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) on penalties to win the 3rd edition.

The association assures members of the public of thrilling matches, and great sportsmanship in the upcoming SWAN Security Cup.

Supreme Court Grants LGs Financial Autonomy

 The Supreme Court declared on Thursday that it is unconstitutional for state governors to hold funds allocated to Local Government administrations.

In its lead judgement read by Justice Emmanuel Agim, the apex court said the 774 local government councils in the country should manage their funds themselves.
