Ogun To Join Oil Producing States, As Exploration Commences

The quest of Ogun State to be an oil producing State would soon materialize as the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), sets to begin oil and gas exploration in the Gateway State.

Stakeholders in the oil industry,  including the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Heineken Lokpobiri, 

Managing Director, SHELL Petroleum Development Company Ltd, Mr. Osagie Okubor; Chief Executive, Nigeria Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, Engr. Gbenga Komolafe and the Group Chief Executive Officer, NNPC Ltd, Mr Mele Kyari, stormed Ogun State on Friday on plans by the Federal Government to start oil exploration in the state.

They were received by Governor Dapo Abiodun and his Deputy, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele.

Hon. Lokpobiri, who spoke at the governor's office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta said Ogun State has always been part of the Dahomey Basin with prospect of having huge deposit of hydrocarbon

.

The Minister said: "We decided that we are going to resume exploration in the different Basins; we decided to come to Ogun State to reassure the people that we have very high potential of discoveries here. Ogun has always been part of the Dahomey Basin and our presence underscore the seriousness the federal government attaches to the exploration activities that we want to carry out in Ogun State."

Hon. Lokpobiri who added that oil and gas remain the quickest way to Nigeria's economic prosperity, said his team is in the State in continuation of the campaign for exploration activities.

He said the visit was also to demonstrate the seriousness and commitment of the federal government to shore up its revenue through the oil and gas sector.

He further "Today we are here to tell the people of the federal government's commitment to ensuring that we continue our campaign and exploration activities across the country. We are doing this exploration activities in several places across Nigeria and today we are in Ogun after which we will proceed to Sokoto State," he added.

The Group Managing Director, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited,(NNPCL) Mr. Mele kyari, while speaking, said Ogun State is blessed to be in the Dahomey Basin corridor with expected high deposit of oil, assuring that the corporation is coming back in ernest to commence exploration activities, even as he expressed the hope that oil would be found in commercial quantity.

In his remarks, the Executive Director, Nigerians Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, Mr. Genga Komolafe, said the coming of the team to Ogun State is to further demonstrate the commitment of the Federal Government to grow the oil reserves and enhanced federation revenue.

"We all understand that Nigeria is very prolific in oil and gas, but then there is still need to grow the reserves through exploration activities given our huge hydrocarbon as a bench mark," he noted.

Komolafe informed that the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) makes provision for the funding of the development of the Frontier Basins, adding that in line with the commitment and the aspirations of the government, the Nigerian Petroleum Regulatory Commission is working in synergy with the NNPCL to leverage on the PIA to aggressively carry out oil exploration in the Dahomey Basin.

"The Dahomey Basin stretches up to Delta, Edo, Ogun and Ondo states. We intend to in the course of this exercise, cover all those states leveraging on the provision of Section 9, Subsection 4 of the PIA. This is good opportunity for the people of Ogun State and it would be complementary to the reforms and transformation initiatives of the governor. We want to congratulate the governor and the people for being the beneficiaries of this initiative," Komolafe said.

Responding, Governor Abiodun said Ogun State is part of the OPLs 302,303 306, 307, saying the acreages present unique opportunities for the qualification as a Frontier Exploration State as defined in the PIA section 9.

He observed that the history and studies over the years allow any investment under the frontier exploration basin funding to not only realize the oil and gas potentials, but also acquire data that would aid Bitumen exploration and exploitation in Nigeria. 

The country, Abiodun maintained holds the second largest resolves in the world of 42,b tons, adding that a lot of studies have shown the potential of the basins, which brings Ogun State to the fore and projecting it towards becoming a beneficiary to achieve commercial success and derive economic benefits from exploration and production within a minimum time schedule.  

"It is noteworthy that this is a region of the country that provides ease of access, low entry and operating costs, a safe and welcoming community and a very active state government support and participation. 

"The Gateway State therefore presents some unique opportunities towards the realization of the full intentions of the PIA section 9 on frontier exploration as it will contribute to guarantee additional petroleum production of additional petroleum products for the country and afford more supply to potential refineries in the area.

"As a low hanging result, this area also presents the opportunity for Bitumen extraction, thereby reducing import dependency and bringing with its savings in foreign exchange expenditure on this single line item," governor said.

Ado-Odo-Abeokuta Road Reconstruction To Begin Soon- Abiodun

Relief would soon come the way of motorists and commuters plying Ado-Odo/Abeokuta expressway as Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, MFR, CON,  said his administration has awarded the contract for the reconstruction of the 63km road

Governor Abiodun who disclosed this at Ilaro on Thursday, during the Commissioning of the Ilaro -Iwoye-Owode road in Yewa South Local Government Area said the reconstruction of the road was part of his administration's efforts to address the infrastructural deficit in the State.

He described the road as the second busiest in the country, adding that when completed, it would allow for the evacuation of goods and services from the axis through the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway to other parts of the country.

To him construction work has commenced on the Sagamu-Papalanto road, while that of Papalanto to Ilaro is on course.

"We have just awarded the Ado-Odo/Abeokuta road. It will be the most expensive road this administration has reconstructed. It is 63 kilometres.

"That road is the second most busiest road in the country and extremely important to the economy of Yewaland, Ogun Central, and the entire Ogun State.

"From our industrial capital of Ado-Odo/Ota, it allows you to evacuate goods and services through that road to the hinterland. Those in Ado-Odo/Ota will go on that road through Papalanto, link the interchange, and you are there on Lagos-Ibadan expressway," he stated.

Prince Abiodun said his administration has built affordable houses in Ilaro and constructed between eight to nine roads in Ogun West Senatorial District in fulfilment of his promise not to develop one part of the State to the detriment of others.

He said his government is working towards making the axis the food basket and cotton headquarters of the country through a strategic agricultural programme.

Abiodun maintained that the Commissioning of the Ilaro -Iwoye-Owode road which was in a deplorable condition since 1991, is part of the celebration to mark the five years of his administration, emphasizing that his focus on infrastructure was due to it being a key economy enabler that attract investors to the State.

While noting that the road would open up Yewaland, Ogun State and the country for more economic opportunities, the governor assured the people that any abandoned projects that have a direct impact on their lives would be completed.

The Senator representing Ogun West Senatorial District, Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, said the road was in a state of disrepair and claimed many lives through accidents, kidnapping and robbery, adding that by putting the road in good shape, the governor has succeeded in saving the people from their harrowing experiences.

While noting that the road would give the people new lease of life and also address the infrastructural deficit in the area, Senator Adeola noted that businesses that had hitherto folded up in the axis, would be revived.

A former governor of the Gateway State, Aremo Olusegun Osoba in his goodwill message said the axis had in the past been the food basket that fed the state and Lagos, appreciating the governor for not embarking on elitist, but people oriented projects.

Osoba used the occasion to throw his weight behind the transformation of Abeokuta and other towns in the State through urban renewal programmes, urging him not to be distracted as there is the need to further open up the State for more economic prosperity.

Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure  Engr. Ade Akinsanya in his welcome address, said that the road will usher in socio-economic development and individual prosperity while investors would be attracted to do business in the area thus generating employment opportunities for the youths and get them usefully engaged.

Olu of Ilaro, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, in his speech noted that despite its importance, the road was abandoned by previous State and federal governments, adding that the many palliatives done by the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA), did not put the road in proper shape.

The commended Governor Abiodun and members of the National Assembly from the senatorial district for working together to change the narrative, saying it helped in fostering economic growth and enhanced commercial activities in the area just as it serves as a milestone for the execution of other people oriented projects in the senatorial district.

Highlight of the occasion was the commissioning of the road performed by Aremo Osoba.

NPF MAKES SIGNIFICANT PROGRESS IN CRIME REDUCTION, ROLLS OUT ONE YEAR CRIME ACHIEVEMENTS OF IGP EGBETOKUN

As the nation marks the first-year anniversary of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration, the Nigeria Police Force has spared no effort in ensuring that crimes and criminality is reduced to its barest and this has led to salient and significant progress in the fight against all forms of crimes in the country as the Police has intensified its operations and made remarkable strides in ensuring the safety and security of all Nigerians.

In the past one year, the Police has successfully apprehended 4,826 armed robbery suspects, 3,078 kidnapping suspects, 2,479 suspects for rape/sexual crimes, 1,243 suspects for unlawful possession of firearms, 3,523 suspects for cultism, 3,381 suspects for murder/homicide, 13,402 suspects for other offenses. Our operations has also led to the rescue of 1,750 kidnap victims, the recovery of a significant cache of illegal items, including 2,566 firearms, 19,510 rounds of ammunition, and 1,475 vehicles/motorcycles nationwide.

Similarly, the NPF has successfully prosecuted 29,152 criminal cases across the country within the year. Out of these, 17,679 cases have been conclusively dispensed with, while 11,576 cases are still undergoing trial. Additionally, 51 cases are currently under appeal at the respective appellate courts. Impressively, 16,200 of the dispensed cases have led to the conviction of suspects, who have received various forms of punishment for their criminal acts.

Today however, the Police paraded 19 suspects involved in various illicit activities. Among these is a case of kidnapping involving one Muhammad Abubakar aged 24 and Shehu Muhammad aged 35 both from Zamfara State. The duo were apprehended in possession of an AK-47 rifle and some magazines, through a coordinated effort between FID-IRT operatives and local vigilantes in Asawa village, Kogi State. These suspects have been responsible for a series of robberies in Benin and multiple kidnappings in Okene, Kogi State. 

Infrastructural Development: Gov. Abiodun commissions Sagamu-Iperu- Ode road

Ogun State Governor,  Prince Dapo Abiodun, MFR, CON, on Wednesday commissioned the Sagamu-Iperu-Ode-Sapade road, as part of activities to mark  his first  year for the second term in office,  as he announced award of contract for the construction of the Siun-Ogere-Iperu-Ilisan road.

Recall that the Gateway State number one citizen on Tuesday was in Ogijo, in Sagamu Local Government Area to commission the popular Hospital road in the town, where he vowed to sustain the tempo of the ongoing infrastructural transformation across the State. 

Speaking at the commissioning of phase one and two of the eight kilometres road, the governor said the Siun to Ilisan road would complement the existing roads and make travelling seamless in the axis.

Governor Abiodun, who underscored the importance of good road network as key to the development of any society, noted that the newly re-constructed road, apart from serving the people of Remoland, also serves people from other parts of the country as it connects Lagos to Ibadan and to the rest of the country.

He said before its take over by his administration, the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) had carried out palliatives on the road, which was still in a terrible state, forcing motorists to find alternative routes.

Prince Abiodun said: "This road starts from Ikorodu, it is connected to Lagos and pass through Sagamu to Iperu to Ibadan to the rest of the country.

"Before we constructed this road. it used to take about seven hours to get to Ibadan from Lagos. But now, you can travel from Lagos to Ikorodu to Ogijo to Sagamu in less than 50 minutes."

He said contract for the construction of the road was awarded in three phases to ensure quality job, adding that with the two phases completed, the third phase has been awarded and the contractor mobilised to site.

Governor Abiodun emphasized that providing infrastructure is in line with his administration's transport master plan which is aimed at increasing the ease of doing business which in turn would create jobs and reduce crime in the long run.

The Governor disclosed that the Gateway International Agro-Cargo Airport has been licenced to commence non scheduled flight operations, while that of scheduled flights are being expected.

The Governor also hinted that the construction of the Kajola Dry Port would soon be flag off to further boost the infrastructural development of the State.

In her remarks, the member representing Ikenne and Sagamu Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives, Hon. Adewunmi Onanuga, expressed gratitude to the state government for reconstructing the road after many years of neglect.

Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Ade Akinsanya, said the road was divided into three phases for quality job, adding that the contract for the third phase has also been signed.

The Akarigbo and Paramount Ruler of Remoland, Oba Babatunde Ajayi, in his remarks noted the remarkable achievements of the governor in the last five years, appreciating him for responding to the cries of the people by fixing the road.

Dapo Abiodun: Grace galore, bountiful showers at 64

THOSE who live by their strength may readily explain how they surmount odds; those who live by the power of the Almighty need no such explanation. They work hard, but they let God be God, directing them as unmoved mover creatively structuring their paths that eventually yields boundless rewards. That is the story of the Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun (MFR, CON), as he clocks three scores plus four, and five years in the saddle at the Gateway State, Nigeria’s top investment destination. May 29, for many governors, is just the day they assumed office; for Abiodun, it is the very day of his birth, and so the celebration is always multi-pronged. The Royal Air Force has a motto that both instructs and motivates, and captures Abiodun’s trajectory: Per ardua ad astra (Through difficulty to the skies). It’s been a long, tortuous, often lonely journey for the Ogun state helmsman that many loved to mock in the days he sought a lawmaking ticket; those days when he swiftly congratulated winners and immediately collapsed his structures into their own in the interest of the party, elevating the future above the present, confident that his time would come, and trusting in the grace of the One who gives and, adding no sorrow to it.    

 In his epochal document, My Early Life (1968), the sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, left as a gem for all generations: “After rain comes sunshine. After darkness comes the glorious dawn. There is no sorrow without its alloy of joy; there is no joy without its admixture of sorrow. Behind the ugly terrible mask of misfortune lies the beautiful soothing countenance of prosperity. So, tear the mask!” When you look at trajectory of Dapo Abiodun’s political life, you see that the words of Nigeria’s sage fit right into the tapestry of his odyssey. Abiodun got into office decades after he first thought of doing so, and the battle when he announced his interest in the Oke Mosan top job couldn’t have been fiercer. Those for whom he literally put his life on the line in the days gone by decided that he was an enemy that must be stopped by all means: the yellow vests usually worn by his supporters was treated like disdainful rags and his posters and billboards were pulled down in blind rage. Abiodun did not have the luxury of a handover note, and even the vehicle in which he rode on inauguration day was borrowed from a neighbouring state. What a truthful but incredible story !

 

If getting into Government House was arduous, living in it was/has been war. There was no trick the naysayers, confounded in their refusal to embrace the reality of their exit from power, did not deploy to take him down. They deployed hack and hired writers buoyed by the rustle of currency notes; they deployed blackmail and character assassination. They scoffed at his projects, including international Airports and dry ports altruistically designed to lift the Gateway State into international reckoning. For each road he did across the state, they mocked him for the one not yet done. They called him a non-performer, but could not fault the verdict by local and international agencies that recognized his genius in ICT, agriculture and business development, in education and the arts, and in the health and housing sectors. When he would not budge, they went after his men, cooking up stories to break marriages and demoralize his leadership, but they failed with embarrassing rapidity.

The last four years have been so turbulent for his administration. The Iperu-born prince and business mogul has faced character assassination and political betrayal by diverse camps of crooks and laissez-faire personalities. But when many believed that there should be a casting down, the Almighty Gid decreed a lifting up. Today, as he celebrates his 64th birthday; it is evident that God has put an end to his political travails. When you look at what he has gone through in the last four and a half years, you can only give thanks to the Almighty God. Court cases, blackmail, the threat by his predecessors and opposition vote buyers; the treachery by certain devious party men who hobnobbed with the opposition after riding to power on the ticket of his generosity—the list was literally endless. Many thought the music had ended for Abiodun after his first four years, but God did His wonders. Many naysayers believed he would not survive the grand betrayal, but he did, and today treachery has buried those who hatched by it in hot lava. They are like fish out of water, and birds shorn of wings. Abiodun is 64, in good health, and with a great record. It is The Lord’s doing and it is marvelous in our sight. 

The dark night is past, and Ogun is on the way to a glorious dawn. Those who thought he could not do well in government and cast aspersions at his personality are now serenading him for what he has done. It is no coincidence that his remedy for the economic anguish in the land remains unmatched, his palliatives alluringly novel. From students to civil servants, and artisans to market (wo)men, everyone has a sense of belonging. Ogun students in higher institutions got N50,000 each while their counterparts from other states got nothing; those in the lower levels got N10,000 each. Thousands benefited from his festival of surgeries; civil servants enjoyed cash and food packages: rice was sold at half the price. Buses, tricycles and bikes running on CNG crashed transport costs, and special food markets charging half the normal prices of foodstuff eased the pains of the populace. Close to 600 kilometres of roads have been done, but of course much more remains to be done because of Ogun’s massive size. Recognizing his genius, the Federal Government appointed him a member of its economic team. The economy is recovering, thanks to the President’s ingenuity and the vision in appointing Abiodun as part of Nigeria’s economic brainbox. Most analysts say that Prince Abiodun’s ISEYA mantra has been a massive success, yet he is conducting a multidimensional survey to solidify the feedback mechanism.

Significantly, the political atmosphere is calm. Ogun, once a war zone, is at peace. Blood flowed before him; now, it is commerce conducted in tranquility that pervades the state. Instead of thugs and touts, entrepreneurial youth rule both the public and private spaces. Those who fed from trouble and piled up weapons of war in the dark days have been pushed into irrelevance. In Abiodun's Ogun, peace is the common currency of life, and troublemakers have no hiding place. The governor has no enforcers, only supporters who love good governance. As the international relations and public policy experts Roshan Paul and Sarah Jefferson contend, “Peace is a pre-requisite for development as a whole because it creates an enabling environment for the fundamentals of a society’s progress: human capital formation, infrastructure development, markets subject to the rule of law, and so on. In the absence of peace, education and health structures break down, systems to provide infrastructure disintegrate, and legal commerce is crippled. Critically, peace also frees up resources, both financial and human, that would otherwise be diverted to controlling (or creating) violence.”

Governor Abiodun is a man of his word, and the people love him for it. Says the Bard of Avon: “The purest treasure mortal times afford is spotless reputation—that away, men are but gilded loam, or painted clay.” As he moves into the middle of his second term, we wish him greater strides in office. SWAN Security Cup: No Civilian Will Play For Nigeria Customs Team, Comptroller Ojo Assures

ABEOKUTA - As part of concerted efforts to reduce smuggling in the border areas of Ogun State, the Customs Area Controller in Ogun State Command 1, Comptroller James Ojo has expressed his readiness to engage the of border communities in sporting activities to discourage them from illicit act.

The Customs Boss disclosed his while receiving Executive members of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ogun State chapter at his Idiroko office.

Comptroller Ojo who underscored the importance of Sports as a tool to eradicate crimes emphasized that, if the youth are not properly utilized, they would become tools in the hands of the smugglers.

He said his command would ensure every border friendly community benefit from the Comptroller-General of Customs' Social responsibility by facilitating developmental projects to encourage them.

Comptroller Ojo, therefore, expressed the readiness of the command to partnering and support SWAN towards the success of the forthcoming 4th edition of SWAN/SECURITY CUP billed to hold in August this year.

"Former Comptroller General at Seme border, Jibo MB set up a football team for the youth and that team is still there till today. The youth bought that idea and they are all participating in the sporting activities team.

"There is an existing football team in Ogun and I will ensure that the football team improve optimally in their performances. I'm going to improve on the customs football team. The service is solidly behind you.

"As per sports, you can count on me, I'm ever ready to be part of it, we will surely support your competition.

"Thank you for your contribution towards the health of our men. Your contribution to sports development cannot be over emphasized.

"As regard the SWAN Security Cup, we are not going to use mercenaries, although, we have civilians training with our officers as part of our CSR to our youths in the border communities, but none of them are registered for the SWAN Security Cup."

Comptroller Ojo acknowledged the contributions of SWAN members in the development and growth sports in the country.

Earlier, the Chairman, Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN, Ogun State Chapter, Comrade Michael Azeez-Ogunsiji  had explained that the visit was to intimate the Comptroller with the activities of the association especially the SWAN SECURITY CUP competition.

Comrade Ogunsiji told the customs boss that the competition is organised annually to promote unity and sustain the existing relationships among various security and safety agencies in the state.

He noted that the competition had in the last three years created jobs opportunities for some youths within participating agencies and solicited the continued support of the command to ensure that the competition achieve its set objectives.

Gov. Dapo Abiodun to Commission Hospital Road in Ogijo

Ogun State, Nigeria - His Excellency, Prince Dapo Abiodun, CON, Governor of Ogun State, is set to commission the newly completed Hospital Road in Ogijo. The event is scheduled for tomorrow, May 28, 2024, at 2:00 PM.

In an official invitation, Hon. Babatunde Olaotan, HBO, Special Adviser Government House and General Services, extended the invitation on behalf of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG).

This commissioning marks a significant milestone in the state’s infrastructure development, reflecting the governor’s commitment to improving road networks and enhancing the quality of life for Ogun State residents.

Ogun Supports 8,800 Farmers Through FADAMA Scheme

 

About 8,800 small holder farmers across the 20 local Council areas of Ogun State have benefitted from the free agricultural inputs and assets as well as infrastructural support through the OGUN-CARES FADAMA to further boost the outputs of farming enterprises in the state.

Items distributed include 14,000 day-old chicks, 560 bags of chick feed, 209 fish feed, 500 bags of fertilizer, 8 motorized sprayers, and 75 rechargable knapsack sprayers. 

Other supports are 24 roads, which were rehabilitated, including culvert, water drainages, and provision of boreholes for water supply at four wet markets where food processing takes place to increase hygiene and reduce food contamination.

Presenting the items to the benefiting farmers at OGUN-CARES FADAMA premises, OGADEP, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, Commissioner for Agriculture, Hon. Bolu Owotomo said the State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun aknowledges the plight of farmers occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic and was passionate about alleviating their plights through various intervention programmes. 

Owotomo gave kudos to the farmers who, in spite of the prevailing economic challenges, plant and process food for peoples consumption, thus contributing their quota in the government's strive to ensure good security.

He implored farmers who are yet to benefit from the project to be patient as the distributions are being done in batches, enjoining the beneficiaries to join hands with FADAMA Team and make judicious use of the items to maximize the inherent profits.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mr Samuel Adeogun said over 10,000 farmers have been assisted in the previous distributions across the state and they have been sending good reports on how the project has bettered their lots.

In a related development the ministry has presented seven motorcycles to field officers in the Produce Department to enhance their performance and improve revenue generation, particularly in areas with challenging terrain.

At the presentation ceremony in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, Hon. Owotomo, emphasized the Prince Abiodun-led administration's commitment to supporting the welfare of its workers by providing necessary tools for effectiveness. 

He expressed confidence in the produce officers' ability to reciprocate the gesture with increased revenue generation and productivity.

While acknowledging that the motorcycles may not cover all 13 zones under the department, Owotomo promised that future phases would address the needs of remaining officers and zones.

Meanwhile, market stalls, lock up shops and solar powered boreholes have been commisioned by the state government to enhance the linkage and agro-processing capacity of farmers and their communities.

Speaking at the commissioning of agricultural infrastructural support to farmers under OGUN (IFAD ASSISTED VCDP- AF) held at Imodi, Odogbolu, Atan, Ijebu North East and Ijebu Imusin, Ijebu East local government areas of the state, Hon. Owotomo noted that the provision of the facilities was more than physical structures because it symbolizes collective effort to empower farmers and also to provide them with the tools and resources needed to thrive.

He added that access to clean water for processing activities and adequate market facilities are fundamental to the success of the agricultural sector.

He said that the state government has made giant strides to boost food security, enhance agricultural productivity and improve the quality of life of rural communities, adding that the infrastructure would not only improve the health and well-being of the communities, but also stimulate economic growth and development .

The commissioner highlighted some of the achievements through intervention provided by the present administration to include empowerment of 3,000 farmers with farm inputs under the Ogun N-Cares, constructive partnership with institutions and agricultural investors aimed at enhancing food system, capacity building of 12,000 farmers on sustainable agriculture under the value chain development programme, OGSTEP facilities training of stakeholders and distribution of production inputs to cassava and rice farmers  amongst others.

National Programme Coordinator, Hajia Fatimah Aliyu, represented by the Human Resource Advisor, Mallam Gidado Bello pointed out that the objective was to improve the livelihood and living standards of farmers through intervention programmes, such as construction of facilities.

FORMER EFCC CHAIRMAN, IBRAHIM LAMORDE IS DEAD

 

Former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Lamorde, has died in Egypt aged 61.

Premium Times said a close associate of the ex-police officer confirmed the incident Sunday morning.

Lamorde was receiving medical treatment for undisclosed ailment in Egypt.

Lamorde, who joined the Nigeria Police Force in 1986 and retired as a Deputy Inspector General of Police in 2021, was EFCC chairman between 2011 and 2015.

He was appointed in an acting capacity as EFCC chairman on November 3, 2011 following the removal of Farida Waziri by President Goodluck Jonathan. He was confirmed as the third substantive chairman of the commission by the Senate on February 15, 2012.

When the EFCC was created in 2003, Lamorde was made the pioneer director of operations. In December 2007, he took over as acting chairman in January 2008, holding the position until Mrs Waziri was appointed chairperson and confirmed by the Senate in June 2008.

FG APPROVES JANUARY, 2025 FOR NATIONAL SPORTS FESTIVAL

 

The Federal Government has approved January, 2025, as the official date for the 22nd edition of the National Sports Festival, tagged, “Gateway Games, Ogun 2024”.

In a communique released after the first National Council on Sports, at the Old Government Lodge, Abakaliki Road, Enugu State, the Minister of Sports Development, Sen. John Enoh, commended Ogun State Government for its commitment to the successful hosting of the festival.

Sen. Enoh noted that the National Sports Festival plays a vital role in national unity, while also increasing socio-economic growth for the sustainable development of the state and the country in general, calling on the Federal and state governments to bid and host national and international sports competitions, to fast-track the development of sports in the country.

While urging all key stakeholders to play active roles towards the successful hosting of the Gateway Games, the Sports Minister informed that the Council of Sports was in support of the establishment of Sports Development and Investment Fund (NSIDF) for its attendant benefits in driving sports development in Nigeria.

Fielding questions from journalists shortly after meeting, Ogun State Commissioner for Sports Development, Hon. Wasiu Isiaka, who expressed the state government’s readiness to host the Festival.

He noted that the NSF embodies capacity to bring people together, foster teamwork, cooperation, instil values of discipline and perseverance, encouraging youths to embrace sports for socio-economic development of the state, adding that targeted funding and incentives were crucial for driving grassroots sports engagements and ensuring the sustainability of sports programmes.

“Through the power of sports, we have the opportunity to come together, forge connections and celebrate our shared humanity. We are leveraging on the “Building Our Future Together” agenda of the Governor, to leverage on sports development at the grassroots”, he said.

 

Abba Kyari Has Been Granted Bail Following 27 Months Of Being Held In Detention

An Abuja Federal High Court has approved a two-week bail for DCP Abba Kyari, the former commander of the Force Intelligence Response Team, following his 27-month detention.

Kyari is anticipated to complete the funeral ceremonies for his late mother, Yachilla Kyari.

The court has scheduled Friday, May 31st, as the date to decide on his bail application in the ongoing trial involving drug-related charges brought forth by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency. This legal matter stems from his arrest over two years ago on February 14, 2022.

The mother passed away on the morning of Sunday, May 5, 2024. She is survived by 10 children, consisting of five boys and five girls. Among them is Abba, who is the eldest son.

Breaking: Governor Abiodun Douses tension over BTA differentials for Ogun Muslim Pilgrims

The Gateway State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, CON has doused the   palpable tension among the  Ogun State Muslim  Pilgrims by ameliorating  the shortfall in their Basic Travel Allowance (BTA) as a result of unexpected  vagaries of the foreign exchange rates.

While NAHCON used 1,252.01 per dollar to calculate hajj fare (BTA inclusive) to give 500 USD as BTA to each pilgrim, the CBN released BTA at 1,530.86 per dollar, which gave each pilgrim 415USD instead of 500USD earlier proposed.

Going by  this development and in order to give each pilgrim 500USD at the new exchange rate of 1,530.86 per dollar, the differential to be paid for the State 934 pilgrims stood at N119,560,712.70.

 

In the face of the shortfall therefore,  and in an effort to make  the 934 State pilgrims perform their hajj rites without stress as well as making  them comfortable during the hajj exercise, the State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun with dispatch, has intervened by paying BTA differential of the sum of  119,560,712.70 for all the 934 State pilgrims for 2024 Hajj Exercise. 

This prompt intervention  by the Governor will enable the pilgrims   to collect 500USD agreed without blemish and douse every anxiety earlier caused by the sudden increment.

To this end, the Consultant to the Governor  on Islamic Affairs, Sheik Iskeel  Lawal, expressed appreciation to the Governor for the timely intervention and prayed for the continuous success of the administration.

Meanwhile, Governor Abiodun,  has implored the pilgrims to be patriotic and  pray  fervently for the state in particular and Nigeria at large, adding that the courage and sagacity exhibited by President Bola Tinubu in the quest of changing the ugly narrative of the past require robust spiritual support from all Nigerians. 

"As you are going on this special and highly essential spiritual exercise in the holy land,  you are expected to pray for the sustainability of this tempo of development and transformation embarked upon by our administration in Ogun State.

"In the same vein, our President,  Asiwaju Bola Hammed Tinubu needs your supplications and fervent prayer to continue  with his  courageous and selfless move towards changing the ugly past for the survival of our nation", Abiodun averred .

Ogun Disburses Second Phase of N1bn Operational Grant to Businesses

Ogun State Government on Wednesday commenced the disbursement of the second phase of the N1billion Operational Grant for Micro and Small scale Enterprises in the state under its OG-cares scheme. 

The first disbursement was done in 2023, during which 1,000 entrepreneurs in micro enterprises received N100,000 each, while those in the small scale categories received N350,000 each. 

About 2,822 entrepreneurs are expected to benefit from the second phase.

Speaking at the event, which was held at the Obas' Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, Governor Dapo Abiodun noted that his administration's blueprint specifies a social contract with the people of the Gatewey State as encapsulated in the "Building Our Future Together" Agenda, stressing that the 2nd phase marks another milestone in his government's commitment to supporting growth and development of the state's Medium, Small and Micro scale Enterprises. 

Governor Abiodun, who was represented by his Deputy, Engr. (Mrs) Noimot Salako-Oyedele added that these enterprises played a crucial role in promoting entrepreneurship, fostering innovation, and driving inclusive economic growth.

He added that the operational grant disbursement was aimed at supporting businesses within the state, particularly in the face of the harsh economic realities around the world. 

He disclosed that beneficiaries were selected through the same strategic, all inclusive and methodical approach, which his administration is known for by carefully identifying genuine enterpreneurs nominated by key stakeholders in the society, such as chairmen of local governments, market men and women associations, Community Development Councils, organised private sector, National Youth Council, Association of People Living with Disabilities amongst others. 

While appreciating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for initiating the scheme, the Gateway State Governor

reassured that the disbursement will be extended beyond June 2024 when it was initially supposed to end, urging beneficiaries to use the grants wisely and responsibly.

The governor added that the grant was given with the expectation of driving a positive change as well as contributing to the growth and development of our economy. 

Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide noted that to whom much is given, much is expected, and implored beneficiaries not to see the grant as national cake but to use it for the purpose it was meant for. 

Earlier in his remarks, the Chairman steering committee for OGCARES who is also Commissioner for Finance, Mr Dapo Okubadejo, said the disbursement, which started in 2022 was to mitigate the effect of Covid-19 pandemic by  providing support for small and medium scale business owners in the state, noting that 2,822 small and micro enterprises would benefit from the second phase. 

While imploring them to make judicious use of the money, he said that the grant would also serve as social protection for the poor and vulnerable in the society and support agricultural businesses. 

Also speaking, the ALGON Chairman in the state, who is also the Chairman Ijebu Ode Local Government, Hon. Emilola Gazal appreciated the state government for its commitment and support towards developing the grassroots.

He said the grant was timely, especially now that many people are going through a lot of hardship in the country while advising beneficiaries to make good use of the money.

In their separate testimonies, Chairman Association of all Business Owners of Nigeria, Dr Femi Egbesola and the Iyaloja General of Ogun State, Alhaja Yemisi Abass, represented by the Iyaloja of Obafemi Owode, Chief (Mrs) Ganiyat Oyelakin,  commended Prince Abiodun for his developmental strides in the state, especially in empowering small and medium scale business owners, youths, farmers and market men and women.

He said that the OGCARES scheme has turned many beneficiaries to employers of labour.

NUJ South West Zone Commends Gov. Abiodun On Appointment Of Journalist As HoS

The leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) South West Zone has commended the Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, on the appointment of Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, as the Head of Service.

It would be recalled that Onasanya, a leading  journalist in the service of Ogun State Government, was recently appointed by the governor as the 20th Head of Service.

In a communique issued at the end of the zonal meeting of the union held in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital on Friday, Abiodun was lauded for appointing Onasanya as the first journalist to become Head of Service in the State. 

The Journalist Governing body in the  South West region also praised the governor for his unflinching support for the Ogun State Council of the Union since his assumption of office in 2019, calling on other State Governors to emulate Abiodun's exemplary gesture.

"The leadership of the NUJ Zone B specifically appreciated the Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, for appointing a journalist, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, as the first NUJ member to be the Head of Service of the state. 

"The Union appealed to other state governors to magnanimously elevate qualified journalists/information officers to the position of permanent secretary, Head of Service and other key public offices," the communique reads in part.

Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun , CON, has expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for conferring the highest honour in the land, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) on the Awujale ofI Ijebuland, Alaiyeluwa Oba (Dr) Sikiru Kayode Adetona.

Prince Abiodun, who visited the President at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Thursday evening, also commended the President for directing the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) Kuru, Jos, to take over the operations and management of the Sikiru Adetona School of Governance at the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye.

Ogun State Govt Warns Against Resale Of Subsidized Bags Of Rice

Ogun State Government has raised the alarm over the purported resale of bags of rice being sold to civil servants in the state at subsidized rates.

The resale, according to the state's Head of Service (HoS), Kehinde Onasanya, was against the purpose of the state government which is to ensure the well-being of the public servants and lessen their financial burdens.

Onasanya, in a statement on Thursday, warned those involved to stop the illegal activities or face the consequences.

The statement said: "It has come to the attention of the State Government that some unscrupulous individuals are engaging in the unauthorized resale of bags of rice that were originally designated for the welfare of Public Servants under the subsidized rice sale program initiated by His Excellency, Prince Dapo Abiodun, CON, Governor of Ogun State.

"It should be emphasized that such actions are in direct violation of the intended purpose of this welfare initiative which is meant to directly benefit the hardworking Public Servants of the State by ensuring their well-being and alleviating their financial burdens.

 

"While the Gateway State Government strongly condemns these acts, individuals involved in the resale of the rice are hereby sternly cautioned to desist forthwith as any form of unauthorized resale or profiteering from this subsidized commodity will be met with attendant consequences.

"For clarity, the amount approved by the State Government for the sale of the bags of rice strictly to Public Servants is N8,500.00 for 10kg, N17,000.00 for 20kg and N42,500 for 50kg with maximum purchasable bags for Officers on GL. 01–14 to be 20kg while for GL. 15–17 is 50kg.

"The State Government remains steadfast in its commitment to the welfare of the Public Service and thus, urges the teeming beneficiaries to uphold the integrity of this welfare program while members of the public are enjoined to report any observed unauthorized activities to the relevant authorities."

SAFER SCHOOLS INITIATIVE,OGUN BEGINS DEMOLITION OF SHANTIES, MAKESHIFT STRUCTURES ON PUBLIC SCHOOLS SETBACKS

Ogun government has commenced a Safer Schools Initiative with the demolition of all shanties and makeshift structures placed on setbacks and fences of all public schools in the state.

Leading the exercise in the state capital, Abeokuta,the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Environment who doubles as Chairman Ogun State Environmental Taskforce on Compliance and Enforcement, Alhaji Farook Akintunde said the exercise is to ensure that students are safe when in schools as these shanties and makeshift structures are hideout for criminals.

"You are aware of a lot of kidnapping cases throughout the country.Schools are cheap targets where they can strike ,so the state government is been proactive by demolishing them to make the students safer"

"The schools must therefore be open for all to see and not covered in the name of trading.These shanties sometimes harbor criminals and the state government is determined not to have any kidnapping occurrence in its schools.

"Aside from these ,those shanties and structures also distract students from proper learning due to the trading activities going on in them which is not good for their learning processes."

Over three hundred  shanties and structures were demolished at St John's Primary School,Kuto,Nawair-Den Primary School,Oke -Ijeun, Nawair-Den Secondary School,Oke-Ijeun, Baptist Primary School, Idi-Aba all in Abeokuta.

Akintunde also used the opportunity to warn Headteacher and Principals against allocating government setbacks near the wall of their schools saying that it contradict environmental laws.

Meanwhile the state Taskforce has demolished all shanties and makeshift structures at Panseke Market.

They were found guilty of street trading and disturbing vehicular movement in the area.

SWAN Commiserates With Tijani Babangida Over Loss Of Brother, Son, Wants Support For Recuperating Wife, Others

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has commiserated with former international Tijani Babaginda over the loss of his brother Ibrahim Babangida, an ex-junior international.

SWAN also condoled Tijani and his family over loss of his young son days after a fatal accident along Kaduna-Zaria highway.

SWAN President, Mr. Isaiah Benjamin, speaking through the Association's Secretary-General Amb. Ikenna Okonkwo, on Monday said he has been sad since the news of unfortunate road crash got to him.

"Tijani Babaginda has always been a jolly good fellow. I remember his recent outing as chairman of a grassroots football competition in Kaduna. I'm still yet to come to terms with the accident which claimed the life of his brother Ibrahim who is also lively and enterprising.

"I urge Tijani and other family members to take heart. As Sports Journalists in Nigeria, we will continue to stand with you and your family at this time and always. 

"It is our utmost prayer that you, your wife and any other affected by the incident be healed and recover as quickly as possible," he said.

The SWAN President then urged the Kaduna State and Federal Government as well as spirited individuals to lend hand of support to Tijani (who has given so much to his dear country) and others who sustained injuries as a result of the accident.

Tijani, President of Professional Footballers Association of Nigeria, was notably part of the squad when Nigeria won football event at 1996 Olympics.

Gateway International Airport to Become Major Transportation Hub for S/West---Gbajabiamila

....says Abiodun's administration is transformative

Chief of Staff to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, has commended the bold initiative of Governor Dapo Abiodun on the Gateway International Agro Cargo and Passenger Airport, saying that the airport would soon be the transportation hub for other states in the South-West.

Hon. Gbajabiamila also applauded the Governor for forging ahead with the airport project even when many of his colleagues failed in their quest to build world class airports in their states.

The former Speaker of the Lower Chamber, who stated this during a chat with newsmen at the airport shortly after attending the commissioning of the Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona School of Governance Studies and presentation of a book titled "Reinventing Governance in Nigeria: The Oba (Dr) Sikiru Kayode Adetona Model," at the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, said the airport will revolutionize air transportation in the region and Nigeria as a whole.

He further gave kudos to Governor Abiodun for believing in the airport project, which he said would help improve the economy of Ogun State.

He added that the airport would help drive the economy of the state, neighbouring states, and the country as a whole, saying that the ease of doing business in the state would also be improved.

"For Ogun State, this airport has the potential of being a hub for every other state around the South-West and improving the ease of doing business. You can travel from here. The potential is enormous. You can't begin to count; it has its ripple effects on the economy. He stated.

"When I was in the National Assembly over the years, I knew of several states in the South-West that tried and struggled to build airports that were nowhere of this size and they were not able to do it. Without taking anything away from them, it's commendations all the way for Governor Dapo Abiodun.

"I was surprised at what it looks like inside. The outside belies the inside, and I think the governor has done a good job. He deserves to be commended.

"I believe this airport was built in two years and some months, and that is a short period within which to complete an airport such as this.

"It has the longest runway, and you know what that means. So, all in all, we have to give kudos to the governor.

"Coming here today, this is my first time at the airport. I have heard so much about it; he is so proud of it.

"You know it is one thing to put your money somewhere to do something and do it for the sake of doing it. But when you do something and you believe in it and you have a passion for what you are doing, the output, the product, is different because you put your all in it, and that is what I see here in this airport."

Gbajabiamila described the administration of Governor Abiodun as transformative, with many infrastructural projects across the state.

He continued: "I can only describe his administration in one word: transformative, very transformative. 

"We've come, we've seen, what you see is what you get and each time I come here, I see what his administration is doing, especially in terms of infrastructural development and i give kudos to His Excellency, the governor."

Gov. Abiodun Makes Case For Ogun Division Of Court Of Appeal

Ogun State Governor,  Prince Dapo Abiodun has solicited the creation of the Ogun Division of the Court of Appeal to aid quick dispensation of justice in the state.

Governor Abiodun made the request on Wednesday when he received in his office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem.

To him "The setting up of the Ogun Division of the Court would ease the work loan of judges in the Ibadan Division".

"My plea is that this initiative that you have resuscitated, perhaps we can have it repeated periodically and this will be as a precursor to the request that we made sometimes in 2020 when I wrote to the then President asking that he should please consider setting up the Ogun State Division of the Court of Appeal and I think that request is strengthened by your trip here because you also alluded to the fact that when you were in Ibadan Division, most cases were from Ogun State," he said.

The governor, who commended  the Appeal Court President for working tirelessly to ensure quick disposition of appeals in all the divisions through her "decongestion initiative", noted that this would lead to efficient justice delivery system in the country, as justice delayed is justice denied.

He further "I want to thank you and as you have mentioned in your remarks that you have slated about 150 cases to be heard and concluded in the scheme, made up of 10 panels, I believe what this will do is that it will strengthens social order.

"I am sure that will span between criminal, commercial and civil cases and this will immediately unlock enterprises and commercial activities and strengthens social order that otherwise would have been stopped because of the dragging of the cases for many years," the governor said.

He noted that his administration has carried out several reforms aimed at repositioning the justice system,  including the implementation of the Multi Court House Scheme, as well as the appointment of 22 judges in the state.

Abiodun appreciated members of the state judiciary led by Hon. Justice Mosunmola Dipeolu for their support, especially in setting up the special court that handles cultism related cases, positing that this has helped in ensuring that justice is done in a timely manner.

Speaking earlier, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem said her visit to the Ibadan Division was to decongest appeal cases that had been dragging due to lack of time, occasioned by election and commercial appeals.

Justice Dongban-Mensem disclosed that the Division has one of the highest work loads of all the divisions of the Courts of Appeal and this is made worse by the depletion of judges as a result of posting, promotion, retirement or death.

The Appeal Court President regretted that the Ibadan Division of the court, which had two divisions in the past, was reduced to one, hence the current workload, assuring that something would be done to address the imbalance.

She commended the Abiodun-led administration for the transformation taking place in the state and for carrying the state judiciary along in the scheme of things.

Gateway International Airport To Become Hub For Aircraft Maintenance, Flight Training School

An aircraft maintenance repair facility and a flight training school for young pilots and auto engineers are set to commence operation at the Gateway International Agro Cargo and Passenger Airport soon.

The facility, when fully operational, would ensure that aircraft would no longer travel outside Nigeria for routine maintenance, which will not be done at the Gateway International Airport.

The President Air First Maintenance and Repair Facility, Gbolahan Abatan, made this known in an interview with newsmen shortly after meeting with the Gateway State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun in his office

Abatan noted that the company was looking forward to working with the state government in the development of the Aircraft Maintenance Facility at the Agro Cargo Airport.

According to him, the company plans to start aircraft assembling at the facility.

He further said that the company, when fully operational, would create jobs for the locals and indigenes from other states.

Heommended Governor Abiodun for building a world-class airport in the state.

"We had a great discussion, and the encouraging thing is that the Governor has given us the assurance that he will give us all the necessary support to get things going.

"So, hopefully, with our certification process in place, we should be able to move in by the end of June to commence our activities at the airport.

"We also want to establish our flight training school for young pilots and auto engineers to be trained as well and we already have some airplanes in mind to use and we will eventually be able to assemble the airplane when we bring them in in parts there to be able to create jobs for the local indegenes and indegenes from other states," he said.

 

In his remarks, Commissioner for Transportation, Engr. Gbenga Dairo noted that the facilities at the airport are first class with the longest runway in the country, adding that the technology being deployed at the airport for aircraft and airport management is the best.

Dairo, while noting that Air first has a track record of excellence in aircraft maintenance, added that the state is delighted with the citing of the foremost aircraft maintenance company at the airport.

OLUWALOGBON ELECTRONICS TO HEADLINE 2024 SWAN MEDIA CUP

Popular Electronics Merchant in Ogun State, Oluwalogbon Electronics has become the official title sponsor for the third SWAN Media Cup.

SWAN MEDIA CUP is a 5-Aside football competition among journalists in Ogun state.

The competition tagged "SWAN/Oluwalogbon Electronics Media Cup" is organized by the Ogun state chapter of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) to foster unity and strengthen existing relationship among the members of the fourth estate of the realm.

Announcing the sponsorship deal during a meeting with the SWAN Executive members on Tuesday, the Managing Director, Oluwalogbon Electronics, Mr.  Solomon Enilolobo restated his determination to continue to contribute to the socio-economic development of the state.

Enilolobo who described SWAN as a viable professional body, assured that he would be part of the success story of the third edition of the competition.

Enilolobo said his resolve was to ensure that, he contributed his own quota to the economic advancement of the state through sports, politics and social engagement.

Earlier, the SWAN Chairman, Michael-Azeez Ogunsiji explained that the 5-Aside football competition had remained an annual event for journalists in the state to engage in physical exercise aside their usual writing.

Ogunsiji thanked Mr. Enilolobo for being in the vanguard of promoting sports and youth development in the state.

The SWAN Chairman noted that the competition which is expected to kick start in June 7, 2024 will remain a reference point in the near future.

Remo Stars Inching Closer To Champions League After A Rare Win Over Rivers United

Remo Stars came from behind to record a rare win against Rivers United in what was their first ever defeat of the Port Harcourt side in 10 matches spanning seven years.

Monday evening 2-1 win was their first since their maiden encounter with Rivers United in 2017.

Before now, Rivers United had won seven times while three other encounters ended drawn.  

The win on Monday put Remo Stars a point behind the table-toppers, Enugu Rangers who will be under severe pressure as Remo Stars aim for their first ever Nigerian Premier League title.

Conceding a last minute goal against Rivers United in last season’s Super 6 encounter was one of the factors that cost Remo Stars the title.

Now they put pressure on Rangers International of Enugu as the race gets to the anchor leg.

Yet it was not an easy win for them as their former star, Andy Okpe was the one that put Rivers United ahead through a penalty kick. He famously scored the winning goal for Rivers United when in the first stanza of the league last year.

He appeared to be hunting his former club again when he was called upon to take the penalty kick after his teammate, Deputy Echeta was fouled in the penalty box in the 18th minute.

The smart kick beat Kayode Bankole to the wrong side and extended Okpe’s goal tally against his former employers after the superb goal in the first leg in Port Harcourt which Rivers United won by two nil.

In the second half,  Remo Stars were all over the game with more area covered and it was not a surprise when Haruna Hadi broke the deadlock in the 68th minute to give the home fans a lot to celebrate.

With the match inching towards the final minute, Togolese import, Kwame Mawuena headed home from a corner kick by Adams Olamilekan in the 83rd minute to give the home side the maximum points.

Ogun Governor Wins Independent Newspapers Governor Of The Year (Tech Innovation) Award

 Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun CON has won the Independent Newspapers Governor of the Year (Tech Innovation) award for the year 2023.

The award was presented to the governor, who was ably represented by his Special Adviser on Media, Hon. Kayode Akinmade, at the Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, with former governor of Ogun State, Aremo Olusegun Osoba as chairman.

The Tech Innovation award is in recognition of Governor Abiodun's commitment to use innovation and technology to drive the economy of the Gateway State.

His innovative and technological approach to governance has propelled Ogun State to be among the second best in the country in Internally Generated Revenue (IGR). His government also rolled out a gas-powered public transport system with the conversion of petrol/diesel buses to natural gas

The initiative would soon be extended to motorbikes and tricycles. In addition the administration of Governor Abiodun also established the Ogun Tech Hub, while it has also put in place, the "Light Up Ogun State" project, which is meant to provide electricity to the nooks and crannies of the state.

The governor is also deploying technology to fight crimes in the state with the commissioning of a top grade drone by the Inspector General of Police recently.

Aremo Osoba, while praising the organisers of the event, noted that the awards cut across political divide, zones, and religions. 

Taraba State Governor, Dr Agbu Kefas received the Governor of the Year (Education and Youth Employment), Governor Caleb Manssseh Mutfwang of Plateau State, Governor of the Year (Infrastructure Development), Pastor Umo Bassey Eno of Akwa Ibom State, Governor of the Year (Fiscal Discipline), Governor Inuwa Muhammadu Yahaya of Gombe State, Governor of the Year (Health) and Governor Biodun Oyebanji, Governor of the Year (Community Development).

Chief Olabode George and Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu were also confered with Lifetime Achievement Awards at the event, amongst others.

Rashidi Yekini: Gateway United Commemorates Former Player And Iconic Striker On His 12th Death Anniversary

  

12 years after the passing of Nigeria's all-time leading goalscorer, Rashidi Yekini, Gateway United joins fans and the icon's family in celebrating and honoring the legacy of the Kwara State-born striker.

Yekini wasn't just a legend in Nigerian football; he was a true ambassador of the sport, inspiring countless young footballers with his achievements even today.

Reflecting on Yekini's illustrious career and his impact on Gateway United during his brief tenure in 2005, Niyi Soleye, the acting General Manager, reminisced: 

 "Yekini was not only a prolific goalscorer but also a gentleman respected by teammates and opponents alike. His 37 goals for Nigeria remain unmatched, a testament to his talent and dedication."

Soleye fondly recalled Yekini's time at Gateway United, describing it as a pivotal moment for the club and its supporters.

 "I vividly remember his arrival like it was yesterday. As club secretary then, it was an honor to witness such a caliber of player join us. He seamlessly adapted to our style, boosting morale both on and off the pitch."

"While his passing in 2012 under controversial circumstances was tragic, his legacy continues to inspire future Nigerian footballers."

Yekini made his mark in Nigerian club football, notably with Shooting Stars and Abiola Babes, before conquering Europe. His dynamic style and impressive goal-scoring prowess made him a formidable force.

During his brief stint at Gateway United in April 2005, alongside former national teammates Sani Abacha and Jude Edemba, Yekini made 26 appearances, netting 7 goals. His contributions were invaluable, etching a special chapter in the club's history.

Yekini's demise on May 4, 2012, at 48, deeply saddened the football world. He was laid to rest at his family compound in Ira, Kwara State.

His legacy as one of Nigeria's greatest footballers will endure, his name forever etched in the annals of Nigerian football history.
