FLOOD PREVENTION,OGUN TO CONSTRUCT DRAINAGE CHANNELS, MINI-BRIDGES AND CULVERTS

As part of its efforts at  mitigating flood this year, the Ogun State government says it will construct almost three thousand metres of drainage channels and mini-bridges and culvert across the three senatorial districts of the state.

The state government will also clear and desilt about fifty seven thousand metres length of river and stream courses.

Ogun state Commissioner for Environment,Mr Ola Oresanya stated this while addressing the media on the Ogun State Flood Alert for the year 2024.

He revealed that the drainage channels and mini-bridges will be done at Wesley Primary School, Ijebu -Ode,Saje Dumpsite Road, Abeokuta, Apakila Area of Abeokuta,Igbosoro in Ogijo as well as desilting of river courses at Yemule in Ijebu -Ode,Sense River in Sagamu,Onibuku in Ifo,Odofunfun in Oja Odan,Opa Aro in Isheri,Sokori River and tributaries while desilting of drainage channels will be done in Abeokuta,Ifo,Ijebu -Ode, Sagamu,Ilaro Ota among others.

Aside from these flood preventing measures , Oresanya said the state government through the Ministry of Environment is also determined to further reduce the impact of flooding in the state through the newly- introduced Drainage Permit which is meant to guide intending businesses to appropriately discharge their storm water to the final discharge point and avert conflicts communities.

He therefore assured residents of the state to remain calm as the state government is putting measures in place to cushion the effects of the expected heavy rainfall and prevent damages to life and properties and called on residents living on wetland areas to relocate to safer grounds or create higher elevation within their residence before the rain commences fully.

For the farmers in the state, Oresanya encouraged them to start planning from now while those involved in poultry businesses are advised against stocking density during this stress period which started two month's back till next month due to the predicted above normal temperature with fish farmers strongly advised to harvest before the peak of the raining season which is in July.

The Commissioner also said the state government will continue its productive synergy with the management of Ogun-Osun River Basin Authority on the management of the release of water from the two dams in Ikere Gorge Dam on the largest tributaries of Ogun River to reduce the impact of flooding in wetland areas of the state.

Oresanya also used the opportunity to announce that the state government will soon commence the demolition of marked structures that impedes free-flow of rain water across the state and called on those concerned to remove their valuable properties before the commencement of the demolition exercise.

Abeokuta Explosion: Ogun Govt. Seals Gas Company

Ogun State Government has sealed off Gasco Marine Ltd, the company whose truck was involved in an accident that caused explosion in the Ita-Oshin area of Abeokuta North Local Government Area on Saturday.

Speaking in an interview after sealing off the premises of the company located at Onijoganjogan, Abeokuta, the Senior Special Assistant to the Ogun State Governor on Environment and Chairman, Special Task Force on Environmental Matters, Hon. Farouq Akintunde said the accident occurred due to the negligence of the company.

Hon. Akintunde said: "Two days ago, Ogun State was in a tumult with the news of fire incident that occurred around Ita-Oshin. We can authoritatively confirm that the truck that was involved in that fire is from this company.

He stressed "It was a sorry case because it involved loss of life and destruction of properties. Our preliminary investigation shows that it is an act of negligence from the company as they did not do the needful as regards the truck.

"As a regulatory body which is in control of all these matters, we believe there is a need for us to conduct safety and audit tests on all their trucks to prevent future occurrence. In doing so, we have to shut down the premises and after that all other procedures will follow."

Akintunde said the company would be unsealed as soon as all necessary steps and precautions have been put in place, maintaining that as a business-friendly state, the government does not take joy in sealing business premises perpetually.

Abeokuta Gas Explosion: Abiodun Orders Evacuation Of Affected Buildings, Promises Compensation For Victims

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun,CON has ordered that some of the buildings affected by Saturday's gas explosion at Ita-Oshin in Abeokuta North Local Government area of the state be evacuated.

This is to allow for integrity tests to be carried out on the affected buildings.

Prince Abiodun made this known on Sunday during  on-the-spot assessment of damage done to properties and businesses around  the area.

The Gateway State number citizen also promised that those whose properties were damaged or destroyed would be adequately compensated by his administration, while the state government would also take over the treatment of those in the hospital.

The governor also questioned the safety of trucks carrying Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) across the country, even as he noted that issues bothering on regulations, road worthiness of the modes of transportation of the products should be looked into.

He said: "As a responsible state government, our emergency management team have taken stock of all those businesses, residences that have been affected by this unfortunate incident.

"What has happened yesterday throws up a lot of questions, far ranging questions. The issues around safety, issues around regulation, issues around road worthiness of the modes of transportation, and issues around the required regulatory oversight for the entire industry must be looked into.

"Are these issues happening at the same speed as the industry is progressing? This would allow us to better understand and answer those questions.

"I have directed that one or two buildings be evacuated until our regulatory agency that is in charge does the required integrity test on those buildings to ensure that they are safe for our people to continue to leave in there.

"All those affected will be compensated, all those who are in the hospital, we will take over their treatment," he said.

The Governor stressed further said that his administration would put in place the required legislation to provide the required oversight for the industry, adding that he has directed the Ministries of Environment and Transportation to ensure that the truck heads that are carrying petroleum products into the state are road worthy.

He said that a meeting of the state government with the Petroleum Tanker Drivers Association has been called for Monday in his office to look at the issue of the safety of tankers plying roads in the state.

He averred  that there was the need to now begin to look at the kind of policy frameworks and regulatory oversights that would ensure that such an accident does not happen again in the state.

Governor Abiodun charged the Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON) to be on top of the fast evolution of the industry, saying that they should as a matter of urgency ensure that the standards of the CNG tanks used by trucks meet the required standards.

"We must first ensure that the right regulatory framework to ensure that the truck heads that are carrying petroleum products into the state are road worthy.

"So, I have called for a meeting of the state government and the Petroleum Tanker Drivers Association tomorrow in my office so that we can interrogate this situation and inform them of the steps that we will be taken immediately to ensure that trucks that are transporting such inflammable products are indeed road worthy and they do not now become dangerous, particularly to our citizens.

"From what we have seen, the CNG tanks that are providing fuel is what exploded and caused the inferno and from what we know, CNG is meant not to be as flammable as LPG or as petrol. Those tanks were meant to be constructed to certain safety standards.

"The question is this: Is the Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON) on top of the fast evolution of this industry? Can they adequately confirm to us that they have standards for the gas tanks that are being used for CNG, powering trucks, and vehicles? That also needs to be answered.

"Going forward, we need to now begin to look at what kind of policy framework, what type of regulatory oversight should be provided both at the state and federal level because we will not allow this unfortunate incident to become a clug in the wheel of the energy transition that is needed in the country," he added.

Gov. Abiodun Sympathises With Victims Of Abeokuta Gas Explosion, Calls For Calm

 Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun has expressed great sympathy for the victims of a gas explosion at the Ita-Oshin area of Abeokuta, the state capital.

According to reports, there was a fire incident at about 5pm caused by a lone accident of a gas truck with the inscription Gasco Marine Bar 250 at Ita Oshin junction a few metres from the roundabout.

The truck, moving inward Abeokuta, lost control and ran into the road pavement before it eventually stopped.

The driver fled the scene while the truck boy lost his life. His mutilated remains have been deposited at the General Hospital, Ijaiye.

It was gathered that four parked vehicles were burnt to ashes. The inferno also affected five shops, with one completely burnt.

Four trucks from the Federal and the Ogun State Fire Services were on the ground to put out the inferno.

Ogun State Governor Abiodun, in a statement on Saturday night, regretted the loss of life in the inferno and the attendant destruction of properties.

He, however, called for calm, assuring that everything was being done to put the situation under control.

 

He said: "I am deeply saddened by the tragic gas explosion that occurred in Abeokuta, Ogun State on Saturday, which led to the loss of an innocent life and destruction of properties. This is a devastating incident that has brought pain and anguish to many families.

"On behalf of the government and people of Ogun State, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family of the lone victim of this tragic incident. My prayers are with them during this difficult time.

"I also wish to express my sympathy to those who suffered damage to their businesses."

The governor praised the quick intervention of relevant agencies of government and first responders, which brought the situation under control.

Governor Abiodun noted that relevant authorities have been mandated to ascertain the cause of the explosion and ensure that appropriate measures are put in place to prevent a recurrence.

Ogun Governor Warns Against Collapse Of Family Value

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, CON has admonished the church to continue engaging families periodically, as the custodian of divinity and morality, in order to build a better society. 

Abiodun made the call while declaring open the 3rd Session of the Sixteenth Synod of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, Egba Diocese, held at the Silver Jubilee Multipurpose Hall, Bishop's Court, Onikolobo, Abeokuta.

Prince Abiodun who was  able Represented by the Head of Service, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, the Governor said the failure of families in any nation spells doom for the entire population, threatens its continuity as well as survival and makes Godly parenting an essential social norm of political stability and egalitarian society.

He further the theme of the Synod; "Godly Parenting: The Panacea for Rescuing a Degenerated Society from Gloom and Doom,” is apt as every home needs spiritual guidance to succeed, therefore, all hands must be on deck to redeem the society through the church in order to build a better society where peace and justice reign.

"Analysis of political sociologists indicates that the family is the smallest political unit in any setting, and concluded that political mobilisation starts with the family as the determinant of peace and stability in any nation. Unfortunately, our society is facing this serious challenge regarding the management of poor parenting as a result of a lackadaisical disposition and the absence of divine guidance on the part of parents in the course of building a home.

He urge, "All hands must be on deck to redeem the society through the church in aspiration of building a better society where peace and justice reign," the Governor said.

The governor reeled out interventions targeted at keeping families intact and reducing threatening challenges at the home to include the empowerment of women across the State through OKOOWO DAPO to make their businesses grow in order to fulfill responsibilities.

"Our vision for the State is clear and well thought out in the strict directive by God. We considered deliberate policies with human face a critical and pragmatic solution to some social challenges we are facing across the country, especially by our womenfolk, who are the bedrock of our homes.

"Our government, therefore, rolled out initiatives to empower our women across the state through what is called OKOOWO DAPO, considering the effect of poverty on keeping homes and fulfilling responsibilities as parents," Abiodun averred.

He also revealed that intervention to cushion the effects of certain policies of the Federal Government at repositioning Nigeria's battered economy, most especially the removal of fuel subsidy is in place where billions of naira has been earmarked.

Such interventions included the N10,000 given to indigent students in all secondary and primary schools, and N50,000 given to Ogun State students 

in all tertiary institutions nationwide.

In his goodwill message, the Speaker, Ogun State House of Assembly, the Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide, advised parents to train their children in the way of God, by giving them good education as well as vocational skills.

He further enjoined youths to obey the instructions of their parents, embrace good mentorship and shun all forms of social vices for the betterment of the society.

Giving his Royal blessings, the Alake and paramount ruler of Egbaland, Oba Dr. Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo said the theme was loaded as parents must make concerted efforts to train their children properly in order not to be put to shame as exemplified in the Holy Bible by Prophet Eli, whose children brought shame and dishonour to him.

Also speaking, the Diocesan Bishop of Egba and President of the Synod, Rt. Reverend Emmanuel Oludaisi Adekunle, appreciated Prince Abiodun for being a governor with high acumen, who has stood tall to tackle the hardship being faced by the people through provision of  palliatives.

Earlier in her address, the Diocesan Mother, Chief Mrs. Abosede Osunkeye, advised parents to treasure their children, who are gifts from God and submitted that any child built on Godly foundation can never sway when life's challenges arise.

Ogun Monarch Donates Sienna Bus To Police Divisional Headquarters

 Oba James Obafemi Saliu, the Ologere of Ogere, has donated a Toyota Sienna bus to the Ogere Police Divisional Headquarters to boost their anti-crime operations in and around the Ogere community.

The donation was part of the week-long activities to mark the one year anniversary of the royal father on the throne.

He had promised the people of the community during his coronation last year that he was going to ensure their security

The Oba also donated a well-furnished security building for the joint use and coordination of the activities of other paramilitary outfits in the community.

A renowned philanthropist and an accomplished businessman, the Oba promised more people-orietented projects in the community while enjoining all the citizens of Ogere to remain law-abiding and support the efforts of the Palace and the security agencies to provide adequate security in the community. 

Receiving the vehicle on behalf of the Ogere Police Division, the Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Commissioner, CP Abiodun Alamutu Abiodun, thanked the Oba for his magnanimity promising that it would be put to judicious use. 

He also enjoined other well meaning citizens of the state to emulate the kind gesture of Oba Saliu by supporting the Police Command and other security agencies in the state with the right equipment and useful intelligence to combat crimes.

Abiodun Appoints Tunde Onakoya Sports Ambassador

Ogun Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, CON has appointed Mr. Tunde Onakoya, the National Master of Chess and the current Guinness World Record Holder for the longest Chess Marathon in history, the Sports Ambassador of the State.

The Gateway State, who made this known on Thursday when he received Mr. Onakoya in his office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, also  announced the commencement of the State Chess Competition to be held in all parts of the state in honour of Mr. Onakoya.

Abiodun, who was impressed with the achievement of the National Chess Master at the global stage, said this could not have been possible without determination and resilience and hard work.

"I can see why you continue to be inspiration to many young people across the length and breath of this country. You have gone further by establishing a foundation called the 'Chess in Slums Africa' because you are determined to tell your story and encourage other children and get them out of the slums and give them hope and future.

"Today, we will be officially appointing you as our State Sports Ambassador. Coincidentally, Ogun State will be hosting the National Sports Festival in the next nine months or thereabouts and we are boasting  that we are set to host the best National Sports Festival that has never been held in the history of this country and coincidentally, chess is one of the games that will feature in that event.

"I have decided that because of you and in your honour, we will begin an Ogun State Chess Competition across the length and breath of the state. Since you are now officially our Sports Ambassador and our Chess Ambassador, we will leave it to you to design that competition from the local government all the way to the state level. 

"But we as your state, we will have a sponsor in the Tunde Onakoya Prize, for the winner of that competition," the governor explained.

The governor likened the travails of the Chess Master to that of millions of youths in Nigeria who are struggling to make something out of their lives, stating that his achievements in the face of difficulties is a testimony that life does not recognize where one comes from, place of birth or parent's status in the society.

He commended the longest Chess Marathon holder in the world, for his resolve to succeed without engaging in dubious activities, noting that with the feat, he has joined the league of illustrious sons and daughters who have done Ogun State proud in their chosen endeavours.

Mr. Onakoya had earlier told the governor of his immense gratitude for the support he received from Nigerians in his march to stardom, adding that he felt proud to be a Nigerian.

He also recalled his challenges while growing up, nothing that he saw chess as a way out of poverty and ability to think critically beyond the surface.

In his response, "I am proud to be a Nigerian and from Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, I felt highly honoured and happy in the way Nigerians all over the world supported me immensely to achieve this feats and the honour accorded me by our royal fathers and His Excellency, Prince Dapo Abiodun, my state Governor," Onakoya said.

EFCC Withdraws Appeal Against Order Restraining Yahaya Bello’s Arrest

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has filed a notice of withdrawal to discontinue an appeal against an order of a Kogi High Court restraining it from arresting the immediate past governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello.

In the notice filed on April 22, the EFCC said the withdrawal is predicated on the fact that events have overtaken the appeal.

The commission also admits that the appeal was filed out of the time allowed by law.

“The appellant herein intends to and do hereby wholly withdraw her appeal against the respondent in the above-mentioned appeal,” the notice partly read.

“This notice of withdrawal is predicated on the fact that on the 17th of April 2024, the application filed by the appellant herein was overtaken by the decision of the same high court of Kogi State.

“The orders made ex parte by Jamil on the 9th of February 2024 in said suit which is the subject of this appeal, was made to last pending the hearing and determination of the originating motion on notice which was finally determined by Jamil on the 17th April 2024.

“Furthermore, the notice of appeal was filed out of time and we, therefore, pray that the appeal be struck out for being filed out of time and incompetent.”

Ogun Govt. Sympathises With Victims Of Ado Odo/Ota Over Rainstorm Destruction

 Ogun State Government said it was in touch with the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) to ensure the immediate fixing of poles damaged as a result of rainstorm occasioned by Sunday's downpour in some parts of Sango in Ado Odo/Ota Local Government Area of the state.

The Gateway State government, in a statement signed by the Special Adviser on Media, Hon. Kayode Akinmade said a team from the state government was in the area on Monday to physically ascertain the extent of damage and to know how to engage with IBEDC, as well as sympathising with victims.

The Special Adviser on Media to the Governor noted the cables had not been energized before the destruction, which saved lots of lives.

"Our team went on physical site inspection of the affected area on Monday to ascertain the extent of the damage and to know how to engage with the IBEDC team.

"We are currently working with the IBEDC team led by the Regional Manager and the Technical Head for the Ogun Region. Some of the less affected feeders have been restored and energized while the clean-up of the most affected areas has already started. 

"Most of the poles on the roads have been removed while the remaining will be taken out today (Wednesday). We are working with IBEDC to ensure there will be full restoration of power in Sango Ota before the week runs out. He emphasized.

He stressed further "The government is not relenting on its effort to make sure that we restore power to Sango Ota and its environs and we can assure the citizens that we are on top on the matter.

"We, therefore,  commiserate  with those whose properties were destroyed by the fallen poles, as the government urged those living in the area to remain calm.

According to the Ogun State Governor, Nigeria has now become an attractive brand that is  sellable in the global community, saying it is incumbent on  public relations specialists  to start selling Nigeria's renewed hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu around the world as a way of attracting more investments to boost the real sector of the economy.

Prince Abiodun spoke at the maiden edition of Nigeria Public Relations Week with the theme: Leveraging Public Relations As A Critical Asset For Nigeria's Economic And Reputation Renaissance, held at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta, 

The state governor, who was conferred as the Patron of the Nigeria Institute of Public Relations, also informed the practitioners of the need to help in showcasing the potentials that abound in Ogun State through their professional ingenuity.

Governor Abiodun emphasized the need for all Nigerians to be involved in promoting the good image of the country at all times.

He said: "Exploring the power and passion of public relations to engender speedy development and sustainable growth for an economic and reputational renaissance, as the theme of this week implies, is intrinsically an essential requirement for any government.

He stressed "I recall that in the last few months and following the appointment of Mr Yemi Cardoso the CBN Governor, as he rolled out his road map of monetary policies he kept on emphasizing on the determination to embark on new public relations policy for the bank which has led to the successful management of forex.

"I want to say this exactly defines the leadership being provided by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to change the old order and entrench the image of a promising country with a consciousness of sustainability. Indeed, there can not be branding without product. 

"The right steps being taken by the Federal Government towards total regurgitation of the Nigerian macroeconomy, via the Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr. President who started with very bold and decisive goals that have begun to yield positive and desired results to the admiration of patriotic Nigerians and the astonishment of pessimists."

Public relations, the governor averred, focuses on the goals of an organization rather than the specific methods, saying it proffer necessary direction during economic turbulence, shape images and reputations, calling on the practitioners to help project the image of the State and country in a positive way.

He explained that the state government since inception has embarked on massive infrastructural amenities towards creating an enabling environment to improve on ease of doing business in the state which he said has made the state to be a choice of investment and fastest growing economy in the country 

The governor while promising more developmental projects across the state, said that the current administration has constructed over 500 kilometres of roads across the state to ease movement of the people, rehabilitated over 100 Primary Health Centres, and built over 4000 affordable houses as well as tackle insecurity by equipping security agencies with modern gadgets and patrol vehicles. He concluded.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Muhammed Idris, represented by the Director, National Orientation Agency (NOA), Alhaji Isa Lanre Onilu, in his remarks, said for Nigeria to realized her collective vision, there was the need for Nigerians to celebrate their achievements as well as address chart a new way forward.

While calling for the use of power of communication, the Minister maintained that it was imperative for practitioners to fight against quackery and sanitize the profession, saying his mission was to restore trust in public communication, amplify good policies and programmes, inspired and reoriented national values, recognized quality and talents in the federal government information and communication system a ND create an enabling environment for the media to thrive.

In his words: President of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, Dr. Ike Neliaku said public relations is all about management of reputation and perception as the difference between one country and another is reputation.

He said practitioners of public relations are making important contributions all over the world, saying that it is important to allow perform their duties without hindrance, as the profession is a key to all things as no organization or government could go far without adequate management of reputations and relationships.

Dr. Neliaku said Ogun State was choose to host the event considering it position in terms of recording firsts in the country, emphasizing that governor Abiodun was confered with the title in accordance with the constitution of the institute that allowed it to honour any governor with track record and that has impacted significantly in development of his state.

OGUN GOVT SEALS THREE RELIGIOUS CENTRES FOR NOISE POLLUTION, WARN OTHERS

For contravening the state laws on Noise Pollution and defying government repeated order to the pollution,the Ogun State government has sealed three religious centres.

The three are Christ Apostolic Church, Fountain of Faith District Headquarters, Gbogunmi, Itedo Alafia Community,Bode Olude, Ambassador of Truth Assembly International,Olorunseye Avenue,Ijeun Titun and Salvation Ministries,Kuforiji Olubi Drive Adigbe GRA all in Abeokuta.

In sealing the churches,the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Environmental Compliance and Enforcement, Farook Akintunde said all the three churches were sealed after several warnings and dialogue with them to stop the noise pollution emanating from their worship centres proved abortive.

For Christ Apostolic Church,Gbogunmi, Akintunde said the church was fond of holding evening and night vigils with its loud speakers placed outside its premises at night thereby disturbing the peace of its immediate community.

"The community has not only complained, but has written a strong petition against the church saying the noise pollution emanating from the church is affecting the health of their members"

"All efforts to make the presiding Pastor and the Elders of the church to see reasons to stop the pollution proved abortive saying no serious government will fold its hands as watch such infractions affect the health and well-being of its residents"Akintunde stated.

For Ambassador of Truth Assembly, they were equally found guilty of blaring their loudspeakers at odd times while aside from incessant noise pollution during their services, worshippers of Salvation Ministries,Adigbe were unruly and rough handed government officials when sealing their church.

He therefore warned against obstructing government officials from performing their official duties and called on other religious centres against noise pollution saying the state government will not hesitate to seal up any of them found guilty of noise pollution in any part of the state.

1,500 People Benefited From Free Surgery Programme-Gov. Abiodun

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun said that over 1,500 people have so far benefitted from the ongoing surgeries under the Free Surgery Intervention Programme of his administration.

The governor, who disclosed this while monitoring the sale of discounted rice to civil servants at the State Secretariat, Oke-Mosan Abeokuta, on Monday, said that thousands of pregnant women, the aged and the vulnerable have also benefited from the free healthcare services rendered by the state government.

He said that his government will continue to be proactive in addressing the welfare and wellbeing of the people of the state.

He said: "To date, we have done over 1,500 free surgeries. We have provided free healthcare services to our pregnant women, the aged and the very poor and vulnerable.

"We have paid N50,000 to about 80,000 Ogun State students in tertiary institutions across the country. We have also paid N10,000 to over 400,000 indigent students in primary and secondary schools in the state. We have also given them exercise books. All these initiatives are aimed to cushion the effect of this period."

Prince Abiodun, who expressed delight at the orderly manner the exercise was conducted, emphasized that civil servants remain the representatives of a unique and identifiable segment of the society, adding that whatever is done to the workers have direct impact on the society.

"I have come to witness the implementation of this laudable initiatives which is one amongst several initiatives that the state government has put in place to cushion the impact of the inflation that we have experienced in the economy in recent time.

"The unintended consequences of this inflation is what we are trying to mitigate. We are all aware that our indefatigable President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on the assumption of office, took some very decisive steps that had been applauded across the length and breath of the entire world. 

"These steps were corrective and proactive to free our economy and reposition our country. The first step was the removal of subsidy on petrol and the second was to allow the Naira to float and today, as difficult as a time it is for us, we all know that there is no gain without pain. We can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

"As we navigate this painful period, your responsible state government, being mindful of what you are going through, appreciated the fact that we need to ride this storm today began to implement this initiative," the governor noted.

Prince Abiodun urged the people not to lose hope in the country as the economy was gradually picking with the Naira appreciating at an incredible speed, just as the president was concerned about food security in the country.

He noted that the government would soon provide food items at an affordable price while he commended the state's Head of Service (HoS), Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, for making the process fool-proof and payment seamless.

Speaking earlier, the Head of Service, Mr. Onasanya informed the governor that the sales, which started at the weekend, was fool-proof as Directors of Administration and Permanent Secretary of each agency were on the ground to identify their staff before purchase could be made.

He commended the governor for making the food item available for the workers at a reasonable price, saying the gesture would go a long way in mitigating the hardship being experienced in the country.

Ojumele-Ajegunle Road Damage, Clear Case Of Human error--- Ogun Governor's aide, Akinmade

 Special Adviser on Media to Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, Hon. Kayode Akinmade, has said that the damage on the newly constructed road at Ojumele-Ajegunle in Makun-Sagamu, Sagamu Local Government Area of Ogun State is the result of human error and not project deficiency. 

Akinmade, in a press statement made available to newsmen in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital on Monday, explained that the collector drainage for the storm water in the area was silted up due to indiscriminate refuse disposal, causing the water to  overflow during the downpour on Sunday.

He added that in the same vein, a car wash owner ignorantly built a cover slab on the drain without adequate engineering guidance and advice from experts, thus impeding the flow of water into the drain during the heavy rain.

According to him, appropriate authorities had swiftly moved to the area for prompt repairs, even as  the government was very sad about the unfortunate development and regretted the inconveniences this might have caused the residents.

The statement reads:" Our attention has been drawn to the report of a damaged part of the newly constructed Ojumele-Ajegunle Road, in Makun-Sagamu, Sagamu Local Government Area of Ogun State.

"While the State Government is greatly saddened by the development, going by the inconveniences it will cause to the residents and given resources expended on the project for the benefit of the inhabitants; we , however, want to categorically state that the damage has nothing to do with the quality of the road, contrary to what some sections of the media mischievously reported.

"The reason for the damage was simply that the collector drainage for the storm water in the area was silted up due to indiscriminate refuse disposal, which made the water to overflow during the downpour of Sunday afternoon. 

"In the same vein, a car wash owner  ignorantly built a cover slab on the drain without adequate and proper engineering guidance and advice of experts, causing water not to flow properly into the drain during the heavy rain.

"Meanwhile, the appropriate agency of government has promptly responded and repair work is already ongoing on the road, as the area will be cement-stabilised at the end of the day to prevent future occurrence. 

"Without mincing words, every resident can attest to the fact that the Prince Dapo Abiodun-led administration has been very committed to quality roads across the State since his assumption of office in 2019, and will never relent in his efforts to evenly develop the State without blemish".

Abiodun Flags Off Sale of Rice At Discounted Rates, Says Ogun Remains Committed To Workers' Welfare

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, at the weekend, commenced the sale of rice to civil servants in the state as parts of his commitment to the welfare of the workforce

The event took place at the 'Oja Irorun' Civil Servants Farmers' Market at the Governor's Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

Governor Abiodun, who was represented by the Head of Service, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya said the occasion was a significant step in the ongoing efforts of the state government at improving the living standards of workers in the state.

The governor praised the dedication and the commitment of the workers to service, which he noted contributed immensely to the success achieved by his administration.

"Ogun State civil servants' dedication and hard work form the bedrock of the progress and prosperity of our dear state. Recognising this invaluable essence of workers to the actualisation of the policies and programmes of the state government, the administration has graciously approved the sale of high quality bags of rice at discounted prices exclusively to the workforce," the governor said.

Prince Abiodun urged workers across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to take full advantage of the opportunity and embrace the good gesture by the state government.

In his welcome address, the Head of Service, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Bureau of Establishments and Training, Mrs. Lydia Fajounbo appreciated the government for the initiative, which is one of the many interventions by the government to cushion the effect of the fuel subsidy removal for the state workforce.

The Head of Service, however, urged the workers to reciprocate the good gesture of government by remaining dedicated to duties and collectively work for the progress of the state.

In their separate goodwill messages, the Chairman, Joint Public Service Negotiating Council (JNC), Comrade Isa Olude and his counterpart from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Ademola Ahmed-Benco, appreciated the state government for the initiative, which they said, would restore the purchasing power of the people and promote the welfare of workers.

The union leaders added that the gesture was a testament that the state has a caring and listening governor whom they are proud of, and charged the workers to reciprocate the gesture by effectively and efficiently discharging their statutory duties.

Two of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Temitope Akintayo from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism as well as Mr. Olabanji Sanni, from the Ministry of Environment, thanked the state government for putting the process into motion and promised to keep working assiduously towards effective service delivery.

The bags of rice were handed over to the beneficiaries by Mr. Onasanya on behalf of the government while buses were also provided at no cost to convey the workers from the venue of the programme to a reasonable distance.

It would be recalled that the Prince Abiodun-led administration has been made concerted efforts towards ensuring that the workforce and the entire people of the Gateway State are shielded as much as possible from the attendant effects of the fuel subsidy removal by the Federal Government through various interventions.

The interventions  include provision of monthly cash palliative, payment of peculiar allowance to deserving workers, provision of CNG buses workers and the citizens as well as the unprecedented payment of a robust end of year bonus to all civil/public servants of the State last December, amongst others.

History was made Friday, April 19, 2024, at the Westwood Hotels, Ikoyi, as the Challenge Cup, latterly the Aiteo Cup, and Federation cup, was officially renamed the President Federation Cup.

The Nigeria Football Federation, Ministry of Sports Development and a renowned finance company, GTI, signed a partnership, that is expected to bring more vibrancy, interest and uncommon passion to the oldest football competition in Nigeria. 

The well attended  ceremony  attracted the Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Enoh, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Atinuke  Watti and all the top Directors of the Ministry.

Ogun State Government on Thursday, donated 25 patrol vehicles to the state police command just as it acquired surveillance drones to monitor criminal activities in all parts of the state.

Governor Dapo Abiodun donated the vehicles in the presence of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, at the Arcade Ground, Governor’s Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, even as he called on the force to include technology in its crime fighting efforts.

He said acquiring the drones was one of the proactive steps his administration has taken in collaboration with Lagos and Oyo states to effectively monitor activities on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway to ensure prompt response in emergency situations.

The drones, the governor noted, would be operated by trained personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, Department of Stata Service (DSS) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corp (NSCDC).

Governor Abiodun who had earlier received the Inspector General in his office said: “As a gesture of appreciation of you and all what your are doing to law enforcement and effective policing in our state and by extension Nigeria, we have decided to complement you and your efforts by donating today, 25 patrol vans to the police and our law enforcement architecture. This, we believe, will commemorate your first official visit to Ogun State.

“Towards ensuring peace in our state, we will continue to strengthen and support our already established Security Trust Fund (STF) by procuring relevant gadgets, including drones. We will continue to argument the allowances and living condition of our security personnel to motivate them to enhance security and safety in our state.”

The governor, who was impressed with the efforts of the police boss at repositioning the force for optimal performance in line with the tenet of the President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, however called for the integration of modern technology in tackling the various security challenges facing the nation.

“As we acknowledged your alignment with the tenet of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, we urged the integration of cutting edge surveillance technology to combat the challenges of banditry and terrorism in the nation,” the governor advised.

He said Ogun State remains steadfast in fulfilling its constitutional role by prioritizing the welfare and security of the people through fostering effective inter-agencies cooperation among security agencies in the state.

Prince Abiodun said his administration in the past four and a half years, has procured more than 100 patrol vehicles and motorcycles, as well as over 300 communication gadgets for security agencies in a bid to keep the peace, assuring that his administration would spare nothing at ensuring that residents live in a stable environment and engage in business activities without fear of molestation.

The governor described the Inspector General of Police as a dutiful officer and a fine gentleman who through his educational background and professional dedication was poised at ensuring that Nigerians have a police force they could be proud of.

“You have been deliberate and intentional in the systematic redesigning of the operational strategies and administrative policies of the police force which is driven by purposeful  leadership and capacity enhancement.

“The impactful motivation you continually instill in your personnel through timely promotion and incentives, have boosted their performance and dedication. As an expert in peace and conflict studies, you have exemplified the essence of positive police/civil relations, elevating the trust of Nigerians in the police by addressing misconducts with decisive action.

“Your commitment to community policing has strengthened the bond between the law enforcement and the community members significantly improving the intelligence capacity of the officers. Realizing that modern policing necessitate cooperation with all and is underpinned by technological advancement, you put your efforts and encouraged continued innovations in these areas,” the governor added.

 

Prince Abiodun lauded the police authority for its infrastructural development efforts in that state command, particularly the new police headquarters building, the Technical Intelligence Unit, the Complaints Response Unit, and the Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun Multi-purpose Cooperative Hall.

Also speaking, Egbetokun said his vision was to put in place a professionally competent police force that is service oriented, rule of law compliant, people friendly and positioned to respond appropriately and adequately to the dynamics of crimes in the society.

He acknowledged the massive infrastructural development across the state, disclosing that more police stations and more Area Commands would be created as well as the deployment of more mobile policemen squadrons to provide adequate security in the state.

The IGP praised Governor Abiodun’s innovative idea in the purchase of the drones, noting that the gesture would further enhance the security of the state, even as he called on other states to take the same step to ensure the security of their people.

ROTO Excos Debunk Removal Rumor of Chairman, Olarenwaju

The Executives of Riders and Owners of Tricycle Organization, ROTO in Ogun State have  passed a vote of confidence on their chairman, Comrade Ismail Olarenwaju, declaring their full support for his administration.

The excos  during a meeting held  in Abeokuta debunked the purpoted rumor that the chairman has been removed.

Police crackdown on vicious gang that rape men in Lagos

 

Police authorities in Lagos State have arrested eight members of a gang that specialize in subjecting their victims to several hours of anal sex after dispossessing them of their properties and cash.

The suspects were arrested in the highbrow areas of Lekki, Ajah and Ikoyi.

Police are making efforts to apprehend fleeing members of the vicious gang made up of young men between the ages of 23 and 40.

Police sources said the young men usually rent living apartments in the highbrow areas of the city after which they embark on a search for their victims.

They usually place notices in strategic areas of the city, advertising job vacancies and acting as estate agents.

Job and accommodation seekers who respond to their adverts would be taken to their apartments, usually situated in one of the booming estates, where they are then subjected to all kinds of torture aimed at forcing them to release their account details after which members of the gang would have forced anal sex with them.

Their operational method is to roam around with exotic cars including high-flying SUVs. They place fake advertisements in strategic areas of Lekki, Ajah, Banana Island and even Ikoyi after which they also scout around, looking for fine and healthy-looking men.

As soon as they succeed in getting a victim, they drive the person to their apartment where they torture him for hours. While torturing their victim, they would extract all information about him including his financial status.

“As soon as they are in possession of those personal facts, they swing into action by proceeding to his house or banks to empty his money and other valuables. The second round of their operation is to subject their victim to hours of anal sex which they take turns to have their fill. They usually record their exploits on video and later relax to view it while enjoying their loot,” a police source said, according to Vanguard.

It was gathered that their criminal exploits were blown open after they succeeded in luring and abusing a relation of a mobile police officer.

The officer then complained to officers at one of the police stations in Lekki.

Based on this development, the Commissioner of Police, Adegoke Fayoade, gave marching orders to his special squad to round up the criminals without delay.

The Special Squad, it was learned, succeeded in penetrating the gang and rounded up seven of their members including their oldest member said to be a lawyer.

During interrogations, members of the gang said that their victims were healthy-looking young and old men who would satisfy their sexual urges.

The source said, “They reportedly shocked detectives when they confessed that they had been operating for over three years and that they choose highbrow areas where they could easily track well-nourished and endowed men.”

A police source added, “They were boasting to us about how many healthy-looking men they have abused through the anus. They said they reject men who are not looking healthy, stating emphatically that they have no business with women.

“After their arrest, we confined them in separate cells so that they would not descend on our male suspects inside the cell.

“However, a few days later, one of them raised the alarm that the oldest member of the gang who claimed to be a lawyer was having the same affair with a member of the gang. When we accosted him, he said the relationship had been going on since they had been operating as a gang.

“Our greatest problem now is that some members of the devilish gang have escaped and we strongly suspect that they must be carrying on with their devilish criminal acts wherever they are.

“We are spreading our dragnets and we are sure that very soon, we will round all of them up. I must state that if not for the swiftness with which our Commissioner directed the operation, many men in Lagos State would have been endangered species by now.”

President's Wife Launches Renewed Hope Initiative Programme for South West Women In Abeokuta

No fewer than 120 women from the six south west states are to get the sum of N60million from The Renewed Hope Initiative, a social intervention programme of the wife of the President, Mrs. Oluremi Tunubu.

Mrs. Tinubu, who disclosed this on Tuesday at the launch of the Renewed Hope Initiative Women Agricultural Support Programme for the south west and flag off of the 2024 Ogun State Planting Season, held at the Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta, also said that N10million would be given to 100 persons with disability to capitalize their existing businesses.

She said: "Today, we are supporting 20 women farmers per state with the sum of N500,000 each. To this end, a draft of N10million per state for the South West zone will be handed over to the first ladies of Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo states who are the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) state coordinators for onward disbursement to all beneficiaries in their respective states.

"The Renewed Hope Initiative Social Investment Programme will be empowering 100 persons with disability, small business owners in Ogun State with a sum of N100,000 each to recapitalise their existing businesses."

Senator Tinubu also disclosed that the Renewed Hope Initiative would be collaborating with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture to empower farmers, saying that 75% of the beneficiaries who will be young female farmers and 25% young male farmers would be specially identified, trained and empowered under the program.

The first lady, while adding that the pre-identified 80 women farmers in each state for agricultural support program would be carried along, urged women farmers to seize the opportunity to expand their agricultural ventures and contribute to local and national food production.

"In a short while, the Renewed Hope Initiative will be collaborating with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture to empower potential farmers. In this phase, 75% of the beneficiaries will be young female farmers while 25% will be for young male farmers. They will all be specially identified, trained and empowered.

"I want to implore our women farmers receiving support today to seize this opportunity to expand their agricultural ventures, contribute to local and national food production and serve as role models for others aspiring to join the agricultural sector," she added.

Earlier in his remarks, Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun disclosed that his administration through the Oko'owo Dapo scheme has assisted over 50,000 women to grow their businesses with additional funding from the Federal Government's Nigeria for Women Project.

Abiodun, who added that the total investment of the scheme now stands at about N1.5billion, said the Ogun Broiler Empowerment Scheme through which day old chicks were given to women and broilers taken from them every 90 days, have also empowered over 500 women agric entrepreneurs.

Governor Abiodun while noting that his administration has also launched Ibi-Dero, an initiative specifically targeted at pregnant indigent women for pre-natal delivery, post-natal and neo-natal care free of charge, maintained that his administration has succeeded in reducing Maternal and Child Mortality Rate in the state.

The State helmsman noted that his administration has prioritized the welfare and empowerment of women as a result of their population, adding that his government has also implemented programmes aimed at boost the status of women by including them in politics, governance and economic activities as well as providing education for girls.

Abiodun added that the Renewed Hope Initiative Women Agricultural Support Programme, holds a special resonance as it mirrors the resilience and tenacity of women in the state and the South West, saying that the spirit of women is integral to driving agricultural innovation and economic growth.

Governor Abiodun, while noting that Renewed Hope Initiative program symbolizes the determination of his administration to uplift women farmers, fortifying the agricultural framework and aligning with the sustainable development goals to ensure food security and sufficiency, added that investing in women extends beyond moral obligations.

In her welcome address, the first lady and the state coordinator of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) in Ogun State, Mrs. Bamidele Abiodun, noted that the Initiative is to celebrate and empower women in agriculture, commending the first lady for sponsoring students with interest in agriculture to Belarus for more studies.

She noted that supporting women in agriculture in the state would help to improve the agriculture value chain, adding that the discrimination against people with disabilities would soon become a thing of the past with the determination of Senator Oluremi Tinubu to make the required difference.

In her remarks, the South West Zonal Coordinator for the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) and wife of the Governor of Oyo State, Mrs.Tamunominini Olufunke Makinde noted that the support program would assist women in agriculture thereby improving the agriculture sector of the states, urging the beneficiaries to use the support  judiciously.

EFCC to Arraign Cubana Chief Priest Tomorrow for Abuse of Naira

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has filed a three-count charge against popular Instagram celebrity, Pascal Okechukwu, also known as Cubana Chief Priest, for allegedly spraying and tampering with the naira at a social event contrary to the provisions of the Central Bank Act of 2007. 

Cubana Chief Priest will be arraigned on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, before Justice Kehinde Ogundare of the Federal High Court, Lagos.

This is coming days after controversial cross-dresser Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, was sentenced to a six months imprisonment for Naira abuse. 

Channels Television says it obtained a copy of the charge which was filed on April 4th by EFFC’s prosecutor Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN) alongside seven other lawyers representing the chairman of the Commission. 

In Count 1, it was alleged, “that you, Okechukwu Pascal on 13th Feb. 2024, at Eko Hotel, within the jurisdiction of the court, while dancing during a social event, tampered with funds in the denomination of N500 (Five Hundred Naira) issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria by spraying same for two hours, and you thereby committed an offence, contrary to and punishable under Section 21(1) of the Central Bank Act 2007”

In count 2, it was alleged, “that you Okechukwu Pascal sometime in 2020, in Lagos during a social event, tampered with funds in the denomination of N500 (Five Hundred Naira) issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria by spraying same for two hours, and you thereby committed an offence, contrary to and punishable under Section 21(1) of the Central Bank Act 2007.

In Count 3, it was alleged, “that you Okechukwu Pascal sometime in January 2024, in Lagos during a social event, tampered with funds in the denomination of N500 (Five Hundred Naira) issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria by spraying same and you thereby committed an offence, contrary to and punishable under Section 21(1) of the Central Bank Act 2007”. EFCC Arraigns Father-in-Law, Daughter-in-Law for Alleged Forgery in Lagos

The Lagos Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Monday, April 15, 2024, arraigned a father-in-law,  Alaba Alakija and his daughter-in-law, Oyinkansola Alakija before Justice Mojisola Dada of the Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos on an amended two-count charge bordering on alleged conspiracy and using false documents.

One of the counts reads: “Alaba Alakija and Oyinkansola Alakija, on or about the 6th day of August, 2015 at Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, with intent to financially benefit from the property located at No.10, Keffi Street, South-west, Ikoyi, Lagos, conspired amongst yourselves to use a false document titled: "Vesting Deed by Dr. Omodele Alakija and Mr. Afolabi Alakija", the executors of the estate of the late Sir Ademola Alakija, purporting  same to be made by Dr. Omodele Alakija and Mr. Afolabi Alakija.”

The defendants pleaded “not guilty” to the charges when they were to them.

In view of their pleas,  prosecution counsel ,M. S. Owede prayed the court for a trial date and the remand of the defendants at a correctional facility.

Counsel to the first defendant, M.O. Akangbe, SAN, informed the court of the bail application of his client, which he said he had filed and served on the prosecution. While praying to move the application, he  urged the court to grant bail to his client in the most liberal terms.

However, counsel to the second defendant, Victor Giwa, prayed the court to move the bail application of his client orally. He told the court that he was informed about the matter late and that he came from outside the jurisdiction of the court.

Giwa further stated that his client, whom he described as a lawyer, has a two month-old baby, whom she still breastfeeds, and that she would not jump bail. However, in a dramatic twist, the second defendant’s husband debunked the claim and told the court that their baby is nine months old.

After listening to both parties,  Justice Dada granted bail to the first defendant in the sum of N10 million, with sureties in like sum, who must submit their international passports to the court.

The court, however, took possession of the passport of the second defendant.

The judge adjourned the matter  to May 28, 2024 for commencement of trial.
