100 Patients Benefit From Ogun Free Surgical Intervention Programme In Two Days

No fewer than 100 people have so far benefited from the ongoing Free Surgical Intervention Programme initiated by the Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun.

The programme kicked off on Monday with the registration of patients, while surgical operations started in earnest on Tuesday

The surgical procedures are taking place across the six State Hospitals and the 40 General Hospitals across the state.

The breakdown showed that 36 surgical procedures have been carried out at State Hospital, Abeokuta, Ijebu Ode (22), Ilaro (6), and Ifo (4).

At the General Hospitals, two procedures have been carried out at Odeda, Owode-Egba (4), Ikenne (5), Iperu (3) and Imeko (6). The Olikoye Ransome Kuti Memorial Hospital, Asero, Abeokuta has witnessed one procedure.

 

Speaking on the progress of the programme at the State Hospital, Ijaye, Abeokuta, the Chief Medical Director, Dr. Bababunmi Osinaike, said the intervention programme has been seamless as 491 people have been registered at the hospital, while 36 patients have been operated upon.

He said: "As of this morning (Wednesday), we have registered about 491 enrollees. They are screened by health practitioners and they also decide those that are eligible and fit for surgery. We commenced surgery yesterday and we have carried out 36 surgeries so far.

"Out of the 36, we had 13 general surgery cases, one orthopedic, and 22 Ophthalmic surgeries. The general surgery cases range from hernia, undescended testicles, excision of breast lump, lipomas, among others."

The CMD, said 40 patients have been booked for operation out of which 17 would go for general surgery, and 23 for eye operation, adding that some gynaecology cases like fibroid and thyroid, would be attended to on Thursday.

Head of Clinical Services, the unit carrying out the surgical operations, Dr. Samuel Tolulope, said though the free surgery programme has attracted a huge turnout of patients, it has been hitch-free with no death recorded.

Mr. Owolabi Soletire, a resident of Abeokuta who was operated on lumps in the hand, elbow, and head said: As soon as I saw the advert on the Net, I quickly ran down to the State Hospital, met with nurses and doctors who registered, carry out the necessary tests on me free of charge and today, they successfully carried out the operation. I want to appreciate God and our amiable governor for this free surgery."

Also, Mr. Sunday Alayade, who was operated on hernia, thanked the governor for allowing him to benefit from the programme, saying with the operation done, his health would return to normal.

At the State Hospital Ijebu-Ode, a total of 23 surgical procedures have been successfully completed.

The Medical Director of the Hospital, Dr. Banjo Adeoye, who made this known in an interview, said the procedures would continue till the 31st of March, 2024.

"The surgeries we did today were for those that came and registered yesterday and we carried out 11 surgeries.

"For today, we have 12 surgical procedures and it is still going on at the Theatre as at this moment," he said.

Dr Banjo thanked Governor Dapo Abiodun for the opportunity given to the less privileged to have access to free health care, saying that the hospital is fully prepared to ensure that all registered beneficiaries are attended to.

"So far, it has been smooth. We have no major challenges. It is just that day by day, the number of people registering keeps going up.

"As of yesterday (Tuesday), we had 206 registered beneficiaries and at this moment (Wednesday), we have recorded about 230 beneficiaries for various surgical procedures," he said.

Mrs. Arinola Adenuga, whose 6 years old son was operated on at the hospital, expressed her happiness at the opportunity given to them by Governor Abiodun, saying that the burden of raising funds for the well-being of her son had been taken care of by the programme.

Also, 20-year-old Okuwobi Ayomide, 18-year-old Onaleye Solomon, and 13-year-old Olusola Abdulquazeem, who had Hernia operations at the hospital, thanked Governor Abiodun for the generosity extended to them.

Abiodun's Free Surgery For The Poor, Vulnerable Commences In Abeokuta, Others

The Free Surgery Intervention Programme for indigent people, initiated by the Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has been flagged off with surgical operations performed on patients at the State Hospitals in Abeokuta, Ijebu-Ode, and Ilaro.

The programme which began with the registration of beneficiaries would involve major and minor surgical operations as part of the governor's medical palliative to the people.

Speaking after witnessing the first surgery performed on a patient under the free surgery programme at the State Hospital, Ilaro, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Dr. Rotimi Ogungbe, said the programme which is the brainchild of the governor was meant to bring relief to people with medical challenges that needed a surgical operation.

The services rendered under the programme, Dr. Ogungbe highlighted include, preoperative, operative, and post-operative.

He said: "I have gone round and I have seen the people who have been operated on. What the governor has done is unprecedented in the history of this state. The free surgery programme covers all operations including orthopedics, we are doing gynecological operations, obstetrics, and others."

The special adviser applauded the state government for making available medical equipment and other surgical resources, noting that medical personnel has been fully mobilized to make the programme a success.

The Coordinator in charge of the programme in Yewa Zone, Dr. Bashirudeen Oni, said surgical operations would be carried out on patients with breast lumps, hernia, fibroid, goiters, soft tissue sarcoma, lipoma, prostrate enlargement, adrenalectomy, cataract, amongst others. 

He said the hospital hoped to operate on about eight patients from the start and scale it up as the programme progresses.

In his contribution, the Chief Medical Director of the Hospital, Dr. Yusuf Abdulwahab, commended the people for turning out in large numbers to benefit from the programme, disclosing that those who were cleared were already undergoing surgical operations.

Mrs. Saidat Dopemu and Miss Ogunsiji Waidat, who were the first and second patients to be operated at the Ilaro hospital, appreciated the governor for the gesture, saying it would have been difficult to raise money if they were to pay for the operation.

Also speaking, Mr. Adisa Oladejo, whose son is to undergo a hernia operation, thanked the governor for coming up with a brilliant idea at this difficult time, calling on those with serious medical challenges but lack the wherewithal to take advantage of the programme to sort themselves out.

At the State Hospital, Ijaye, Abeokuta, the Consultant Ophthalmic surgeon, who is the Permanent Secretary and team lead of the Free Surgery Intervention, Dr. Kayode Oladeinde, said out of the many to undergo operations, six patients were successfully operated in the morning.

The Permanent Secretary who lauded the governor for the succour brought to the people, especially at this difficult time, also appreciated the governor for investing heavily in the health sector in the last five years.

Appreciating the governor for the laudable initiatives, Taiwo Ojeje and Timothy Sowale, who were operated on, said the free surgery has given them a new lease of life, pledging to contribute their quotas to the development of the state as soon as they are feat.

At the State Hospital, Ijebu Ode the Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Dr. Tayo Lawal noted that everyone registered to undertake a free surgery during the program would be issued with an Ogun State Health Insurance Agency (OGSHIA) card fully paid for by Governor Abiodun.

"The OGSHIA program has been on for some time now. What it simply means is that for a card of N1,000 per month or N12,000 per year, you are entitled to about 200 ailments captured under the insurance scheme.

"Once you are above 18, you can pay. But, for a family of six, we capture them under that scheme of N12,000 per year. That is different from what we are doing now. We are just using this as a way of bringing more people into the insurance scheme because everyone registered here will be given a card which will entitle them to visit the hospital for the next one year. It's been paid for by Governor Dapo Abiodun," he said.

Speaking during an interview, one of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Adebanjo Adebukola expressed her happiness with the free surgical intervention programme that has given her the hope of having her operation done without paying a dime.

Also, Mr. Fadipe Solomon and Master Adekoya Emmanuel who both thanked Governor Abiodun for allowing them to have their surgery done without paying any amount, called on other citizens and residents of the state to partake in the free surgical intervention programme.

Ogun Kickstarts Free Surgery Intervention Programme

Ogun State government on Monday began the process of offering free surgical services to indigents in the state.

The Executive Secretary of Ogun State Health Insurance Agency, Dr. Afolabi Dosunmu, who stated this at the flag-off of registration for the intervention held at the State Hospital, Ijaye, Abeokuta, said the intervention was a directive given by Governor Dapo Abiodun to provide succour to the people at this difficult time.

Dr. Dosunmu said hospitals in the state are ready to carry out the directive of the governor.

"The modalities are very simple as long as you are a resident of the state, as long as you have one surgical need or the other, you are free to walk into any of our state or general hospitals and enroll on the insurance scheme.

"The doctors there will assess you if it is a case that is ready for surgery and once all other perimeters have been concluded, we will get the surgery done."

He said those whose cases are not ready for immediate surgery, would be enrolled for them to have access to the intervention when they are ready.

He added: "It is possible for someone to have, for example, cataract, and the cataract is not yet matured, we will still enroll the person. We will give the person a date for when the cataract is going to mature.

"For example, if you want to remove fibroid when you see the doctor and the doctor said your electrolyte is a bit high or your blood pressure is a little bit high, it needs to be controlled before you can be taken in for surgery", Dr. Dosunmu explained.

The Executive Secretary noted that surgery operations would start on Tuesday as there were a lot of cases that needed urgent attention.

"We have a matching mandate from the governor for us to enroll 70,000 people and it is broken down to 20,000 pregnant women till they deliver even if the delivery is through cesarean section. The child is delivered, in the first six months, we will take care of its medical needs.

"We have also been asked to enroll 20,000 market women and 30,000 poor people in the state. Among the 70,000, any other person in the state that needs surgery, they have to come down and get their surgery done."

He lauded the state governor for impacting directly on the lives of the people saying, "Everything is free from the moment they walk in and get enrolled, screened and do tests as well as the surgery and even after surgery."

Also speaking, Mrs. Olusola Akintola, a retired secondary school principal, commended Governor Abiodun for the programme, saying it would help the less privileged take care of their medical bills while Mr. Semiu Koleosho, said he enrolled in the programme to enable his son to benefit from the free surgery.

Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima has officially launched the Light Up Nigeria, South East Initiative in Enugu, describing it as the much-expected solution to the power supply deficit that has undermined the nation's economy and industrialisation.

He said the Light Up Nigeria Project, which is part of the priorities set by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to revamp the nation's economy and ensure rapid industrialization, heralds renewed hope for industrialists, investors and Nigerians who had to bear the brunt of the country's power challenges for so long.

Senator Shettima during the project launch on Monday in Enugu also commissioned the 181MW Geometric power plant in Aba, Abia State to accelerate power supply to industrial clusters in the region.

The project, a collaboration between the Niger Delta Power Holding Company Limited (NDPHC) and its partners, is targeted at revamping Nigeria's infrastructure framework with the much-needed drive in empowering Nigerians and strengthening the economic policies of the Tinubu administration.

The Vice President also flagged off the Smart Schools project of Governor Peter Mbah in Enugu and various road projects in Abia State constructed by Governor Alex Otti.

Delivering his address titled, "A Stable Light for a Steady Economy," the Vice President noted that the project is part of federal government's responsibility for the nation's industrialization in fulfillment of the promises made by President Tinubu.

He stated: "This marks a renewal of hope for industrialists, for investors, and for the homes that have long endured the consequences of Nigeria's power supply deficit.

"The Light Up Nigeria project powers the hope of our industrialists and serves as a long-awaited solution to the power supply deficit that has undermined our economy over the past decades. So, this intervention isn’t a ribbon-cutting charade. This is a calculated endeavour to re-engineer our economy, and whatever we design to oil the wheels of our industries is futile unless we stabilize the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI)."

The VP had on October 12, 2023 flagged off the initiative in the South West at the Agbara Industrial Cluster, with stakeholders committing to the successful implementation of the project across the country.

Flagging off the project in Enugu for the South East region, he recalled that when the pilot project was initiated with a business roundtable at the Agbara industrial area, it attracted major investors and industrialists even from neighbouring clusters in Oyo and Lagos States.

"We were sure of our direction in pursuit of the priorities set by His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the dream under construction attracts us to this historic city of coals and industries," he added.

Shettima stated confidently that "even the most skeptical mind has since been persuaded by the milestones achieved in Agbara since October 12, 2023," following the completion of technical studies and a new transformer procured, while a mobile transmission substation would soon be up for commissioning.

Noting that the project is not mere rhetoric, VP Shettima pointed out that as an industrial powerhouse, the South East and its economic fortune is one of President Tinubu's critical priorities.

"This marks a significant step toward reliable power supply. The genius of this initiative is that it promises a boost in supply levels to NESI without injecting public funds. Yet, it provides stable power where our economy needs it the most," he explained.

On the choice of Enugu for the launch of the project in the South East which, according to him, was not based on geographical compensation, Senator Shettima further explained that "with its renowned industrial layouts in Emene and 9th Mile corner, the commercial and manufacturing direction, potentials, and promise of Enugu States align with our vision of fast-tracking the economic growth and influence of this project beyond the South-East, beyond Nigeria, and, in fact, beyond Africa."

He however warned that as Chairman of the Board of NDPHC, he is under obligation "to hold every relevant official accountable and ensure that" the project is not abandoned.

In his welcome address, Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State thanked the Vice President for his professionalism and deep interest in the growth of the private sector and noted that "It's indeed a new dawn for the power sector in the South East.

Mbah said the project is of critical importance since it deals with the power sector which is pivotal for economic growth adding that it will translate to reduced power costs for the productive sector and create jobs.

"It aligns with our approach to governance in Enugu State. It's a disruptive initiative, an innovative way to addressing the status quo.

"We are indeed happy to be associated with this as a region with a compact to the economy. With our population and market size of over 27 million, the opportunities are here.

"It's initiatives like this that will drive the industrial growth we envisage in the South East and the reduction of poverty. It wouldn't have come at a better time than this when we desire to boost our productivity as a nation.

"Let me enjoin our industrialists to take advantage of this initiative and remove any bottleneck to power use in the region. Let today go down in history as the turning point of power supply in the South-East," Governor Mbah said.

Also, Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State said that it's quite auspicious that the launch event is being held in the political capital of the region.

"Enough of the lamentations; let's focus on getting the solutions here. At the end of this programme, let's come up with solutions. Power is like a driver, nothing else will happen without electricity," Soludo said.

He commended the National Assembly for removing power from the exclusive legislative list to the concurrent legislative list but called for the unlocking of gas from the exclusive legislative list to the concurrent list to enable governors to tap into the opportunity and provide power for their states.

"If we do everything to fix the ease of doing business without power is an effort in futility," he said.

He assured that Anambra will grant the right of way to any power infrastructure project without hindrance.

On his part, the Governor of Ebonyi State, Francis Nwifuru said "There is no way people will be willing to pay for electricity with a lot of estimated billing."

He called for the metering of all households needing electricity in the region.

Governor Hope Uzodimma on his part noted that despite the huge investments in the power sector, Nigerians have no access to power.

"There is a need for a comprehensive audit of all investments in the power sector in the sector to know whether we go it right and wrong in the past," he said.

Woman Arraigned For Assault On Police Officer In Ajah

 

The Lagos State Command has arraigned Omorogbe Jennifer Soni after she was caught on camera assaulting a police officer in Ajah. 

The Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed this via his X handle on Tuesday, February 27.

According to Hundeyin, Omorogbe has been remanded to the Kirikiri Female Correctional Centre until the next hearing in March.

He wrote: "The Lagos State Police Command has arraigned one Omorogbe Jennifer Soni ‘f’ aged 26 for serious assault after she was caught on camera assaulting a police officer in Ajah on February 21, 2024. 

"Omorogbe was arraigned the following day, February 22, 2024 at the Etiosa Magistrate Court, Ajah and has been remanded to the Kirikiri Female Correctional Centre till the next hearing on March 27, 2024. 

"The Lagos State Police Command advices Lagosians to remain law-abiding in their day-to-day activities with all and sundry as anyone found guilty of violating the law would be dealt with in accordance with the law."

Osun Omoluabi Progressives Inaugurate State Coordinators

Newly inaugurated state coordinators of the Omoluabi Progressives, a caucus of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun have been advised to uphold Omoluabi ethos in the discharge of their duties.

This was stated by the former Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, who is the grand-patron of the group in Ilesa on Sunday.

“I want you all to imbibe the ethos of Omoluabi in the new position you have been elected into. I recall there was a time I served at the lowest level in my ward in Lagos, cleaning chairs for political meetings amongst others, but look how far God has brought us.

"I never for once fought or forced myself to be anything in political leadership. I have always been called to serve by my leaders. So I want you to also see this as an opportunity to serve our people,” Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola stressed.

He also pointed out that the essence of Omoluabi is to imbibe the age-long ethos of Oduduwa, emphasizing that the Yoruba are his children.

“Your attitude and behaviour in society must distinguish you. Omoluabi is a contraction of 'Omo ti Olu-Iwa bi's (the descendants of the  paragon of virtue).

“You must therefore ensure that you are distinguished in your community and that Omoluabi Progressives is well represented,” Ogbeni Aregbesola stated.

The meeting which had in attendance, five leaders representing each local government in the state, witnessed the presentation of reports by the leadership of each local government on the progress of the group in their respective areas.

Also speaking after the inauguration, the newly inaugurated State Leader, Alh. Azeez Adesiji, stated that he and others see their call to leadership as a call to serve.

“Our nominations and appointment to this revered position of leading the Omoluabi Progressives at the state level is a clarion call to serve and not to lead.   

“Today, we are being entrusted to coordinate a cause to liberate ourselves from the grip of evil-minded political aristocrats, who have continually appropriated to themselves alone the accrued resources of our hard earned democratic gains. 

Above all, we are to reenact the commitment and strong will  of yesteryears, which gave us our mandate on 26th November 2010,” Alh. Adesiji stated.

Also inaugurated were leaders of federal constituencies, state administrative secretary and state organising secretary, amongst others. Sunday's ceremony  followed the earlier inauguration of Ward and Local Government executives of the group in August 2023.

Japa: Gov. Abiodun Approves Replacement Of Health Workers

As the wave of Japa continues to hit the health sector, causing acute manpower shortage in government health facilities, Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has approved a special employment procedure that allows immediate replacement of any health practitioner that leaves the service with another qualified personnel, without the government’s ratification.

Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Tokunbo Talabi, according to a statement on Saturday, gave the hint when he received the newly elected executive members of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, Ogun State Chapter, in his office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

The statement quoted Talabi as saying that, “You know, before now, every employment in the service has to be sanctioned by the governor before the process is undertaken.

“But now, I am pleased to inform you that His Excellency has just given a special approval that is peculiar to the health sector, for the health ministry to employ qualified and suitable personnel to fill the vacancies being created by those leaving the service through their internal mechanism, without having to wait for the Governor’s approval.”

The SSG expressed delight that the administration’s investment in the sector was already yielding results despite challenges confronting the sector nationwide, noting that the staff turnover across health facilities in the state had tremendously improved.

He noted that Abiodun’s passion for a healthy citizenry necessitated reforms in the sector, including the recruitment of 200 health attendants to boost the existing staff in public facilities across the state, while affirming that the administration remained committed to improving the well-being of citizens.

Talabi charged the health workers to remain committed to saving lives, as the government continues to prioritize concerns in the sector, pledging that “we will not deprive you of what we know is right and legitimate; we have to interface to make the system better.”

Speaking earlier, the Ogun State Chairman, of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, Adejoke Bello, appreciated the government for improving the welfare of health workers, as well as its interventions in the sector.

Ogun Govt Disowns Online Cash Palliative Message

It has come to the attention of the Ogun State Government that a fraudulent message is circulating on various social media platforms, falsely claiming that Governor Dapo Abiodun is offering N10,000 cash palliative per person across the state.

 

The scam message also provides a link, urging individuals to apply for the said cash palliative and also share the information for others to benefit.

 

In a statement signed by the Special Adviser on Media and Communications to the Governor, Hon. Kayode Akinmade, the Ogun State Government categorically disclaimed the message in its entirety and hereby informs the public that it is an obvious scam. It urged the good people of the state not to fall for it.

 

"The administration of Governor Dapo Abiodun is committed to genuine alleviation of the suffering of the citizens and residents of the state through initiatives such as the numerous empowerment programmes and policies it has rolled out since 2019 and the N5 billion intervention scheme it announced recently," the statement said.

It added that the government had been providing financial support and other empowerments to enable traders, artisans, women, youths, and other beneficiaries to improve their enterprises and or establish themselves as self-reliant individuals.

"The Ogun State Government is not involved in any form of cash transfer programme through the link provided in the scam message as https://taskcashup.com/get/OGUN-st-relief-funds/Apply/ogun-reg-portal," the statement specifically clarified, adding that the link is fraudulent and unauthorized by the government.

The government also warned that any attempt to access or provide personal information through this link poses a significant risk to individuals and explained that authentic information regarding government intervention programmes and initiatives is disseminated through official channels, including government websites, press releases, and official social media handles.

It said that any information not originating from these official sources should be treated with suspicion and avoided.

 

It urged the public to exercise caution and refrain from sharing such fraudulent messages, adding that the Ogun State Government under the leadership of Prince Dapo Abiodun remained committed to its avowed mission of making life better for the good people of the state during this trying period and beyond, but this will be done in a manner that will not endanger the people.

2013, eleven years ago, was the last time the Super Eagles threw Nigerian streets into wild ecstacy for winning that year's AFCON in South Africa. 

Nigerians, despite their crazy following of European football, truly love the Super Eagles ...they love the team more, in an uncanny way, when it keeps winning and playing well, and entertaining them.

Football entertains Nigerians, apart from unifying them and serving as their opium in moments of economic and leadership despair. 

Between 2013 and 2024, 2014 and 2018 were the only years the Super Eagles made Nigerians truly proud of them; and that was at those years' world cup finals in Brazil and in Russia. 

Within these years, the team failed to qualify for two AFCON and the 2022 Qatar world cup, played some of its all-time worst matches, lost at home to some inconceivable opponents on some occasions, and generally lost its popularity and respect among its fans world over. Its brand fell in football market.

 

But just a few days ago, all of that were eclipsed by its showing at the 2023 AFCON in Cote D'Ivoire, where, against wide expectations, it got to the final of the competition, but lost narrowly to the hosts.

The Super Eagles didn't play to its true capacity and potentials in Cote D'Ivoire, but was decent enough to regain lost respect and whet the appetite of its followers ahead of the next AFCON and the 2026 world cup.

The danger in this is that this is just a period of two years!  Damn too close.

Two years of losing respect and popularity again, and of a possible slip into another vista of ignominy. 

The matter of the coach of the team is not done and dusted after the expiration of the contract of Jose Peseiro. The issue is still- should he go or get another contract?. Yet, the days to the next AFCON and world cup qualifiers are fast running near!

I have been of the opinion that Jose Peseiro should be handed a new contract, but I've read and listened to opposing views, and I think they are logical too. Some people's fear in NFF allowing Peseiro continue with the job is technical rather than my optimistic "pragmatic " view.

The Eagles played an uncharacteristic defensive football with a tinge of occasional counter breaks in Cote D'Ivoire. ...it paid off up until the final where, the weakness of that strategy was exposed and the dynamism required of the players and the coach, on such a big occasion, didn't come to bear.

But I see in this a great opportunity of metamorphosis for this team.

Whether the NFF keeps Peseiro or not, here is a generation of Super Eagles that holds big promises and hope in the next four years. 

It's a young team with a new leader and captain in William Troost-Ekong and a new goalkeeper in Stanley Nwabali, who, in just his first AFCON, is already being talked about in a legendary manner.

The bonding of the players, on and off the field at the 2023 AFCON, is that precious stone the NFF must jealousy guard and guide in the next two years.  I see this team, in the qualifiers, come together in just three days, play and win well, unlike before.  

Yesterday, Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey, in the colours of Fulham, buried Manchester United with their goals. That's the biggest gain of 2023 AFCON. Any player that didn't attend 2023 AFCON will have to be exceptional to get a starting line up in the team or proffer supreme solution to its offensive midfield limitations and goalscoring Albatross that were vivid in Cote D'Ivoire. 

Peseiro should by now know these were the blots in his 2023 AFCON scorecard; and for the coming coach( if Peseiro is not wanted anymore), these are the burdens to carry.

It's up to NFF, time is golden.

Ogun Introduce Free Surgical Intervention Program For Residents

 As part of the measures been taken by His Excellency, Prince Dapo Abiodun(CON) to give succor to the residents of Ogun State during this challenging period, the State government will be embarking on a week long surgical intervention program for the people of the state.

This health initiative under the auspices of the Ogun State Health Insurance Agency will see any resident of the state with health challenges requiring surgical intervention get access to the the required health care for free.

To benefit from this unprecedented initiative, interested individuals are required to do the following from Monday 26th February, 2024:

1) Visit the closest State or General Hospital to them

2) Put down their names for the required surgery

3) Get screened by the health professionals. 

4) Get booked and have the surgery done on the appointed date. 

Beneficiaries will continue to enjoy free healthcare for the next one year after the surgery under the Ilera d'ero health insurance scheme.

Abiodun’s Riposte to Masses Suffering

On February 14, the people of Ogun State received a very unique kind of Valentine’s Day present, as the governor of the state, Prince Dapo Abiodun rolled out palliatives worth over ₦5 billion to reduce hardship during the current cost of living crisis and to better the lives of people. A week later at a stakeholders’ meeting, he further announced the purchase of 100 truckloads of rice to be sold at cheaper rates to residents of the state to cushion the effect of the rise in the prices of goods in the country, adding a proviso: the poor, the elderly, and the vulnerable would enjoy free allocation.

Prince Abiodun said his government was not oblivious nor insensitive to the challenges being faced by the citizens and would leave no stone unturned to ensure that succour comes to the people. While appreciating the perseverance, patience and understanding of all residents in the state, he assured them that the present economic situation is just a transient phase that will soon pass. He also appealed to the people to take things easy with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu: “The Federal Government is not only steadfast in its commitment toward creating a brighter future for all citizens, but it is also trying hard to foster a society where prosperity and well-being of the entire citizens prevail,” the governor said.

To address the challenges associated with the current cost of living crisis, a bitter but temporary pill necessary to address Nigeria’s dwindling economy surgically, the Abiodun administration has commenced implementing a series of phased initiatives aimed at alleviating these burdens on all our citizens.

These initiatives include the provision of a minimum of five exercise books for all 850,000 students in our public primary and secondary schools, as well as a one-off N10,000 education support grant for at least 100,000 pupils and students in our public primary and secondary schools in the state.

Students of tertiary institutions were not left out, as Prince Abiodun announced the provision of N50,000 each to all 27,600 of its indigent students in tertiary institutions nationwide as an education grant. In the health sector, the governor also declared that his administration would provide health insurance coverage for over 70,000 beneficiaries, including pregnant women, children, the elderly, market women and other members of the informal sector. Prince Abiodun was very specific about pregnant women, who, under his “Ibidero Scheme”, will enjoy free prenatal care, with an additional N5,000 per birth and free post-natal care in state-owned hospitals and primary healthcare centres across the state.

In addition, food palliatives, such as rice, vegetable oil and other items are going to be provided for 300,000 households across the state. Also, as part of the initiatives is the commitment of N500 million towards the offsetting of the backlog of deductions from civil servants’ entitlements inherited from the previous administration.

  

This, of course, is in addition to the payment of N10,000 transport allowance to all civil servants for the state. The allowance, first announced in July 2023, was extended in October of the same year to allow the state workforce to continue to cope with the effects of the subsidy removal. Prince Abiodun made sure that the transport allowance intervention does not only cover serving civil servants but also coverers pensioners, who are senior citizens. Recall that the governor had raised pensioners' gratuities to N1bn quarterly to deal with 16-year outstanding owed senior citizens who had served the state diligently by his two predecessors.

The state government also approved hazard allowance for health and medical personnel, immediate release of letters of promotion in respect of 2021 and 2022, payment of March and April 2023 leave bonuses for public servants and immediate cash-backing for the quarterly payment of gratuities to pensioners.

In the transport sector, Prince Abiodun was the first governor to introduce the E-Mobility and Gas Mobility Programme with Compressed Natural Gas-enabled buses and electric-powered tricycles and motorcycles as alternatives to petrol engines. 

These moves might be seen as not only politically expedient but deft to stave off the spiraling angst emblematized by protests by women and youths against high and harsh living conditions first on Monday, February 5, in Minna, Niger State, and spread to Kano, Sokoto and lately Oyo state. Abiodun’s unusual largesse reminds one of Rule 13 law in Norman Schwarzkopf’s autobiography, “It Doesn’t Take a Hero”. 

In his exposition on leadership, the United States-Iraq war general exhorts: When placed in command, take charge. It is better to make a bad decision than to sit on the fence. While many of his colleagues in other state capitals are spending weeks and months planning, debating, holding meetings, forming committees, forming sub-committees, putting together proposals and tabling the proposals, and watching PowerPoint presentations, Gov. Abiodun seized the hour in the political sophisticated, yet highly volatile state. It was the same magic he deployed during the October 2020 #EndSARS protest that swept across the nation. 

If he had not promptly announced these measures, it is not unlikely that the people’s anger might have led to protests or in worse circumstances attack on public utilities like it happened in the other state capitals. Truth told it might not have been the best decision to reel out short-term measures in a situation where a well-thought-out strategy would have been preferred, but with these palliatives in place, he can continually make adjustments in alignment with other state governors and the government at the centre to bring assistance to the people.

As proud of these interventions as one would love to be, they are merely a fraction of the empowerment, social welfare and social development needs at this time. Everybody in a position of leadership at this time should understand the burden of statecraft. To paraphrase the words of Julius Nyerere, they should understand their privileged position is a call to duty to repay the sacrifice which others have made. They are like the man who has been given all the food available in a starving village so that he might have the strength to bring supplies back from a distant place. If he takes this food and does not bring help to his brothers, he is a traitor.

Prince Abiodun should also not be complacent because all is still not well with the people. He might have recorded some successes in the past like when in 2022, he empowered no fewer than 50,000 women in the state through the scheme known as “Oko’wo Dapo”. At one of the scheme’s validation exercises of ward facilitators, the governor disclosed that over N500m was saved via contributions by the beneficiaries in three local government areas of the state. The scheme has been hailed as intervening in the social well-being of traders, who constitute the backbone of micro and small enterprises in the state. The reality on the ground now is that the women “lifted out of poverty” then have since returned to penury. The removal of fuel subsidy has eaten into their little savings. 

Entrepreneurship has not been left out in the governor’s investment in human development and social welfare.  He launched the biggest Information Communication Technology (ICT) hub described as an innovation focal point that provides ideal conditions for entrepreneurs to collaborate, flourish and accelerate the growth of their businesses. The Ogun Technopreneurship Programme (OTP) was also created with the crucial objective of nurturing high-quality ideas in various industries to become tech startups and tech SMEs. But the people are waiting for the 5000 kilometres of fibre optic cables, and the spread of broadband to ensure access to the Internet across the state through the ambitious Ogun Digital Economic Infrastructure Project launched in April 2021.

Youth development and job creation have also so far received unprecedented attention in the state’s history. This must continue to be a top priority. The Anchor Borrowers’ Programme in collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has which has become the core around which youth involvement in agriculture revolves in the state must be strengthened to give practical expression to the promise of food security. As the current situation dictates, stakeholders are optimistic that the programmes will be scaled up to cover even more participants. After all, the governor during the electioneering campaign promised to turn the Gateway State into the Nation’s food basket. The governor is even on record to have promised that the state would ensure the hosting of the best National Sports Festival in the history of the games. We can wait because this would take restless youths off the junctions. 

Indeed, times are hard and the nation as a collective is passing through a lot, but we know a state where the foresight and anticipation of its governor has so far averted the kinds of protests being witnessed in other parts of the country. That state is Ogun, and its governor is Prince Dapo Abiodun who was crowned the Nation’s Best Governor by the SUN Newspapers last week.

INTERNAL SECURITY: POLICE REVIEWS ISSUANCE OF TINTED GLASS PERMIT; TRAINS ICT ANALYSTS, ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS NATIONWIDE FOR COMPLIANCE

In a bid to enhance national security and curb criminal activities facilitated by the misuse of tinted glass, the Nigeria Police Force has concluded its review of the issuance of tinted glass permits, previously banned in June 2022. The ban was initiated due to widespread concerns regarding the role of tinted glass in aiding heinous crimes such as kidnapping, armed robbery, the illegal transportation of firearms, human trafficking etc.

With the proposed lifting of the ban, stringent measures are being implemented to prevent abuse and ensure strict compliance with guidelines governing the issuance and use of tinted glass permits. ICT Analysts and Enforcement Officers nationwide will undergo a comprehensive training scheduled for the 29th of February, 2024, as a prequel to the reopening of tinted glass permit issuance.

The training will equip ICT Analysts and Enforcement Officers with the necessary skills and knowledge to regulate the registration process, guide registrants on the use of the portal where required, attend to complaints from members of the public, and enforce compliance effectively. It will focus on the intricacies of the new guidelines, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a delicate balance between public safety and individual freedoms while safeguarding national security.

The proposed tinted glass permit will incorporate distinctive features aimed at enhancing enforcement efficiency and security. These include a QR code linked to a central database for real-time verification, unique serial numbers correlated with vehicle and owner details, as well as a digital hologram ensuring authenticity and integrity, among other measures.

It is crucial to highlight that the guidelines for the issuance of tinted permits and the use of tinted glass will strictly adhere to the provisions of the MOTOR VEHICLES (PROHIBITION OF TINTED GLASS) ACT 1991 and other relevant extant laws. This strategic approach underscores the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to prioritize public safety while upholding individual rights and national security interests.

The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to providing updates to the general public on the implementation of the reviewed process of tinted glass permit issuance, ensuring transparency and accountability in its efforts to maintain internal security.

TERROR KINGPIN BODERI FALLS: MATAWALLE COMMENDS NIGERIAN MILITARY

 

The Honourable Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Muhammed Matawalle, MON has commended the Nigerian  Military for neutralizing and bringing an end to the terror reign of BODERI and his cohorts in Kaduna State over the weekend.

The Minister who was elated, described the action of the Military as commendable adding that the Government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR was committed in providing adequate security in every parts of the country.

Matawalle said that the bravery and professionalism of the Nigerian Military involved was commendable and needed to be sustained so that we can stem out insecurity from the country.

He charged other state actors to cooperate with the Federal Government in the fight against insurgency and terrorism. He reiterated Federal Government's unflinching support and readiness to sustain cooperation towards eradicating terrorism in Nigeria.

It could be recalled that Boderi and his cohorts has been terrorising Kaduna and it's environs for a very long time before his fall to Nigerian Military.

Boderi, as he was simply known, had for nearly a decade propagated a reign of fear, death and destruction in Kaduna State and neighboring Niger State.

According to the Minister, a major breakthrough has been recorded in Nigeria’s fight against banditry and terrorism by his fall.

He said that the notorious bandit, insurgent and ruthless killer, Boderi Isyaku, was neutralized in a gun duel alongside some of his fighters, by troops of the Nigerian Military,around Bada/Riyawa general areas of Chikun and Igabi LGAs.

Also speaking on the efforts of the Nigerian troops in general, the Minister commended their efforts in the elimination of 286 terrorists and the arrest of of 244 of them, 73 crude oil smugglers were also apprehended and 122 kidnapped victims were rescued as at 22nd February, 2024.

Similarly, the Minister pointed out that several air interdictions were carried out on terrorist hideouts and  which were all destroyed.

Dr. Matawalle enjoined Nigerians to support the Armed forces.

Kaduna Gov’t Confirms Killing Of Wanted Terrorist Leader Boderi

In a heart-warming development and stemming from consistent support to security forces by Kaduna State governor, Senator Uba Sani, a major breakthrough has been recorded in Nigeria’s fight against banditry and terrorism in the North-West and North-Central parts of the country.

The notorious bandit, insurgent and ruthless killer, Boderi Isyaku, has been neutralised in a gun duel alongside some of his fighters, by troops of the Nigerian Army, around Bada/Riyawa general areas of Chikun and Igabi LGAs of Kaduna State.

A statement titled, ‘Target Acquired, Justice Served: Boderi Falls To Security Forces’, signed by the Overseeing Commissioner, Ministry of Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, on Thursday afternoon, said this feat was confirmed to the Kaduna State Government by security forces carrying out internal security operations and diligent checks from human intelligence sources.

“Boderi, as he was simply known, had for nearly a decade propagated a reign of fear, death and destruction in Kaduna State and neighboring Niger State, with a trademark of brutal attacks, mass abductions and cruel, relentless killing. His elimination comes as the culmination of tireless efforts by dedicated troops committed to restoring peace and security in the region. The General Officer Commanding, 1 Division, Nigerian Army (and Force Commander, Operation Whirl Punch) Major General VU Okoro, coordinated the operation through meticulous planning and intelligence.

“The troops on Wednesday night, came in contact with Boderi and his fighters around Bada general area of Chikun LGA. Despite the terrorists’ well-fortified position, the troops laid a successful ambush. Boderi and his associates walked into the trap, and were cornered,” he said.

Aruwan added that in the ensuing confrontation, Boderi chose to resist the troops and engaged them in a fierce firefight.

 

“He was ultimately subdued, and his reign of terror ended in a burst of bullets and eternal ignominy. Two of his associates were likewise neutralized. After the operation, the troops recovered two AK47 rifles, 300 rounds of ammunition, nine AK47 magazines, one magazine carrier, one Baofeng radio set and five motorcycles.

“The elimination of Boderi Isyaku, as a notable milestone in the ongoing fight against terrorism and banditry, demonstrates the effectiveness of determined and coordinated efforts by security forces in confronting those who seek to spread fear and chaos.

“Boderi, known for his ruthlessness and cunning, had long eluded the grasp of security forces, while orchestrating the kidnappings of prominent figures, innocent civilians, school children and students with impunity. His activities not only caused untold pain to thousands of victims and families, but also posed a stiff challenge to law enforcement agents, who, at various times were only a whisker away from apprehending this menace.

“Boderi was involved in a range of deadly attacks spanning Sabon Birni, Rigasa, Buruku, Gwagwada, Rijana and Kateri general areas, the Kaduna-Abuja Road, the Kaduna-Birnin Gwari Road, as well as Shiroro, Alawa, and Mangoro general areas of neighbouring Niger State. His activities included vast and elaborate operations in cattle rustling and gunrunning. He was also known to have built a close rapport with terrorist groups, collaborating with them towards establishing footholds in these areas. Recent intelligence reports revealed his plans to attack a school in his sphere of operation. Those plans have been thankfully truncated.

“It was Boderi who plotted and executed the 11th March 2021 abduction of 39 students of the Federal College of Forestry Mechanization, Afaka, Igabi LGA. This high-profile kidnapping generated shock waves and massive panic around the country, as dozens of young students were whisked away and their families left to deal with unimaginable turmoil.

“On the 24th of August 2021, Boderi masterminded another deadly attack, this time on the Afaka campus of the Nigerian Defence Academy, Igabi LGA. Two officers were killed and another abducted. Weeks later, on 14th September 2021, Boderi led his gang of bandits in the kidnapping of the Emir of Bungudu, Alhaji Hassan Atto, around Dutse village, Chikun LGA. The Emir’s Police Detail was killed.

“These are a few highlights in the profile of a mindless monster, fueled by undiluted hate and evil, veiled underneath an apparently harmless, innocent and youthful exterior. Without a doubt, this baby-faced terror was one of the most dangerous individuals in the country, single-handedly tearing apart the lives of entire communities across several states,” he stated.

Receiving the report, Governor Sani expressed his elation at the development, which he described as a pointer to the bravery and professionalism of the troops involved.

The governor commended Major General Okoro, for his stellar leadership, and praised the troops for their assertive victory. Governor Sani went on to assure security forces in Kaduna State of his unflinching support and readiness to sustain cooperation, towards the successful achievement of their objectives.

Ogun To Begin Sales Of 100 Trucks Load Of Rice At Cheaper Rate-Abiodun

Ogun State has purchased 100 trucks load of rice to be sold at cheaper rates to residents of the state to cushion the effect of the rise in the prices of goods in the country.

The state governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun stated this on Wednesday while speaking at a stakeholders' meeting in Abeokuta, the state capital.

Prince Abiodun disclosed that the rice would be subsidized and made available at the rate it was before the recent astronomical rise in the prices of the commodities.

He, however, said the poor, the elderly, and the vulnerable would enjoy free allocation.

"We have decided to give our people foodstuffs like rice, garri, beans. I have ordered almost 100 trailers of rice, they will start offloading them tomorrow (today).

"We have decided that the poor, the elderly, and the vulnerable will be given the rice free of charge, while others will have to buy the rice at the price we formally bought it before the dollar rose very high so that it won't be a one-off and we can continue till the issue of the dollar is settled," he said.

Governor Abiodun assured the people of Ogun State that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is fully in charge and knows what he is doing.

According to him, the President is on top of the situation, adding that Nigerians will soon start seeing the manifestation of the several policies put in place to curtail the rising inflation.

He added that the Central Bank Governor, Mr. Yemi Cardoso, at a meeting he had with him, has assured that the dollar would soon fall.

"Everything we are experiencing at the moment is very transient, it will soon pass away. Let me assure you, the meeting we had yesterday (Tuesday) and today (Wednesday) after I left that meeting this evening, I am convinced that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is fully in charge. He knows what he is doing.

"With the plan that he has begun to implement, you will soon begin to see the change. We must remain very hopeful.

"The last meeting I had was with the CBN Governor. He said I should quote him and tell you that, very soon, the dollar will crash," he said.

Abiodun noted that his administration in realization of the present hardship facing the country took some steps to cushion the effect, even as he recalled that an intervention worth more than N5 billion was announced by his administration last week.

Tertiary students of Ogun State origin across the country will receive N50,000 each, the governor said.

The secondary and primary school category with about 800,000 students, Prince Abiodun noted, will be done in phases, with the first phase, comprising 100,000 students getting N10,000 each.

Those not captured now would get five exercise books while waiting for the next phase.

The governor said women and the elderly would benefit from free medical care with insurance cards worth N18,000.

Abiodun further noted that his administration would set aside about N500 million monthly to offset the payment of deductions for civil servants in the state public service.

Governor Abiodun urged Nigerians, especially the youths not to allow themselves to be used by unscrupulous elements to disrupt the peace of the country.

"It is now so bad that they have planned to use our youths, give them money to disrupt the peace of the country by staging protests.

"What we going through isn't what other countries around the world haven't also experienced. But they were very patriotic, calm because they know the solution is on the way," he said.

At last D'Tigers Storm Tunisia For Afrobasket Qualifiers

.........as the sports ministry gives the go ahead for the team’s participation.

The Nigeria senior male national basketball team, the D'Tigers, would be competing for honours at the 2025 Afrobasket qualifiers starting Friday in Monastir, Tunisia. 

There have been palpable concerns in the basketball community, when it seemed that the team would not be participating at the 2025 Afrobasket qualifiers window-1, due to the paucity of funds that the ministry of sports is facing. 

However, the Honourable Minister for Sports development, Senator John Owan Enoh, has given his consent for the NBBF leadership to do all that they can to see that the D’Tigers participate in the qualifiers, with an assurance that the necessary funds will be approved and the funds released within the next three weeks, to pay for the flight tickets of the team, allowances and other logistics for the qualifiers. We can now authoritatively confirm that the D’Tigers are on their way to Tunisia and should arrive at the nick of time for the qualifiers and their match. 

While appreciating and applauding the support of the Sports ministry and especially the Honourable Minister of sports development, in his usual manner of thoughtfulness and thoroughness in ensuring that the team makes the trip to the qualifiers, even if very late, the NBBF President Engr Ahmadu Musa Kida and his team rose to the challenge and ensured that all is done for the team to depart for Tunisia, at such short notice, and save Nigeria from huge embarrassment locally and internationally. 

This has quickly doused the anger of FIBA and pessimists,  who do not understand the internal financial situation that the NBBF is faced with, especially the huge outsourcing liabilities of the NBBF that are still outstanding unpaid from 2019 .

"Yes, even though this is coming late, it is heart-warming that our boys would eventually take part in the qualifiers for the 2025 Afrobasket championship," Kida remarked. 

"The board of the NBBF is deeply grateful to the Honorable Minister of Sports, Senator John Owan Enoh, for coming good with his timely support and of course, saving the country from disgrace, and another FIBA ban," he said. 

Meanwhile, ahead of the games beginning Friday, the NBBF boss assured all Nigerian basketball fans, that despite the shoddy preparations, the Nigerian boys would put up their best to make the country proud again by picking a qualification ticket.

IMF Urges FG To Improve Agric Inputs To Boost Food Production

The International Monetary Fund has charged the Federal Government to increase agriculture inputs to boost production and bring down the prices of food items.

This was revealed in its IMF Country Report No. 23/94 released this month, where it identified the drivers of food insecurity and possible solutions.

It said, “The cross-country analysis identifies four levers for raising food security levels: raising per capita consumption, raising production yields, limiting food price inflation, and reducing reliance on food imports.

“Per capita consumption is far below comparator countries in Nigeria, and it could be stimulated through increased diversification. Yields are also lower in Nigeria than in other countries due to scarcity of inputs (fertilisers, modern irrigation methods, and mechanisation)

Addressing challenges to access to timely, high quality, and price competitive inputs would not only achieve optimal productivity of agricultural outcomes but also temper food inflation.”

The IMF added that food insecurity was an increasing policy concern in Nigeria.

“The country is endowed with immense agricultural resources and over 81 million arable and largely fertile hectares, with maize, cassava, guinea corn, yam beans, millet, and rice being the major crops.

NOC congratulates Taekwonist Anyanacho, Saidu for Olympic Games ' slot

The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) has hailed the president, the Taekwondo Federation of Nigeria (TFN), Abdullahi Saidu and Taekwondoist,  Elizabeth Anyanacho,  24, for her qualification for the Olympic Games 

The Taekwondoist,  competing in the 67 kg weight class had dispatched Kenyan Jully Musanga in two rounds at an African/Olympic qualifier in Dakar, Senegal this year. 

  

For Anyanacho, Oly,  this would make it a  back-to-back appearance at the global showpiece.

She was at the Tokyo 2020 Games,  where appeared as a bronze medalist from the Morocco African Games in 2019.

FCT police nab chef for masterminding kidnap of boss' 12-year-old

 

Operatives of the Federal Capital Territory Police Command have arrested one Philemon Chukwuma for masterminding the kidnap of his boss' 12-year-old son, Justin Nwakwo in the Jabi area of Abuja.

This was disclosed on the X handle of the FCT Police on Sunday, February 18.

According to the FCT Police, the suspect, who served as a chef to the Nwakwo family, has since confessed to the crime adding that a cash ransom of three million, nine hundred thousand naira was forcefully obtained from the victim's father.

  Sharing an image of the suspect, It reads: "The operatives of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command have arrested one Ulagu Philemon Chukwuma 'm' 29 years for masterminding the kidnap of his boss' son, Justin Nwakwo 'm' 12, on February 10, 2024, in Jabi, Abuja. 

"Philemon, a domestic worker, who serves as a Chef to the Nwakwo family, was arrested by officers of the Utako Police Divisional Headquarters that were following up on investigations to rescue the abducted boy and also to arrest the perpetrators. 

"Investigations by the Police revealed that the principal suspect, who has since confessed to the crime, conspired with one McDonald Arinze, currently at large to commit the crime. The suspects had earlier forcefully obtained a cash sum of three million, nine hundred thousand naira (3,900,000) as ransom from the victim’s father. The arm of the law however caught up with the criminals following intensified efforts by the Police. The boy was rescued unhurt and reunited with his parents. The cash sum earlier extorted was equally recovered."

TRAGEDY: OAU LOSSES STAFF TO LION ATTACK

The management, staff, students and the entire campus of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, have been thrown into mourning following the untimely death of Mr. Olabode Olawuyi.

A release by the Public Relations Officer of the University, Abiodun Olarewaju, stated that Mr Olawuyi, a Veterinary Technologist, who has been in charge of the Zoological garden for over a decade, was attacked this afternoon, Monday, 19th February, 2024, by a 9 - year old male lion when he was feeding them in their den at the Zoological garden of the University.

The other members of staff who were at the scene of the incident did everything within their power to rescue their boss but the wild cat had already caused severe

On hearing the sad news, the management team, led by the Vice Chancellor, abruptly ended an on going meeting for an on the spot assessment 

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon BAMIRE, was informed, on arrival, by the Acting Director of the University Health and Medical Centre Dr. Tirimisiyu Olatunji, that all first aid and medical efforts to save the life of the victim proved abortive.

 

Saddened by this tragic event, the aggressive Lion has been euthanized.

Mr Olawuyi has been taking care of the lions since they were born on campus about 9 years ago but, tragically, the male Lion killed the man who had been feeding them.

The University management has sent a delegation to the widow and children of the deceased, imploring them to take solace in God who gives life and also has the power to take life.

Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon BAMIRE, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the immediate and remote causes of the incident.

May the soul of Mr. Olabode Olawuyi rest in peace.

OGUN DEMOLISH ALL SHANTIES, MAKESHIFT STRUCTURES AT AKUTE UNDER-BRIDGE,COUNSEL TRADITIONAL RULERS

Ogun state government has demolished all shanties and makeshift structures at the Akute Under Bridge and on the wall of the fence of Zumuratul Primary School also in Akute with a warning to traditional rulers not to use their position to illegally allocate setbacks and open spaces in their domain to traders for commercial gains.

Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Environment, Alhaji Farook Akintunde  gave the warning when he led the state Taskforce on Environmental Compliance and Enforcement to demolish all the shanties and makeshift structures in the area.

Akintunde said the demolition became necessary following a petition sent to the state government by the Anigilage Community Association and the management of Zumuratul Primary School on the illegal allocation of the spaces at the Akute Underbridge and on the walls of school by the traditional ruler of the area for commercial gains.

The allocation and the activities of the traders according to him exposed the residents of the community to avoidable danger while the students of the schools have faced untold hardship through noise pollution and unnecessary distraction.

"Aside from the environmental nuisances which they create,no government will fold its hands and watch a traditional ruler illegally allocate setbacks and open spaces to traders instead of him directing them to government designated markets for selfish gains"

"That the wall of the fence of Zumuratul Primary School was even allocated despite knowing that serene atmosphere is needed for learning is not only bad,but constituted an affront to state government's policies of effective learning environment"

"So the state government had no other choice than to restore the environmental and learning dignity of the area by demolishing all the shanties and makeshift structures" "Akintunde added.

He therefore warned the displaced traders not to go back to the recovered spaces as Environmental Marshals have being detailed to apprehend anyone caught.

Speaking the Chair of Ifo Local Government,Mrs Kikelomo Delano thanked the state government for heeding the call of the Community Development Association and that the Primary School pledging that the local council will enforce the no-trading order in the demolished areas.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun state council has congratulated the member representing Yewa North/ Imeko Afon Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives, Hon. Gboyega Nasir Isiaka popularly called GNI on his birthday.

The Chairman, Comrade Wale Olanrewaju and his Secretary Comrade Bunmi Adigun in the congratulatory message emphasized on the celebrant's leadership style as a rallying point for his constituents.

The Union also commended the GNI representation since he was elected, saying that it has been a role model and unprecedented development achieved so far.
