NSF'2024: Abiodun Inaugurates LOC, Says Ogun Ready To Surpass Past Editions

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun on Monday inaugurated a 16-man Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the 22nd National Sports Festival to be hosted by the state in 2024.

Speaking while inaugurating the LOC at the Governor's Office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, Abiodun noted that the state is more than prepared to surpass previous editions and the achievements recorded during the last festival held by the state in 2006.

The governor noted that his government is ready to continue to put in place world-class sporting infrastructure across the length and breadth of the state.

Abiodun who also disclosed that the festival isn't about the competition or the performances, noted that the state under his watch is ready to showcase the talent, culture, potential and unique sense of hospitality of the people of the state.

"We are determined to put in place world-class sporting infrastructures across the length and breadth of the state, thus underscoring our determination to ensure that we host a very befitting sports festival to the admiration of all stakeholders in the sector and around the world.

 

Governor Abiodun while noting that the National Sports Festival brings together the energy, and creativity of youths in the country and also serves as a platform for them to showcase their diverse talents and potential, added that hosting the festival is a testament to the commitment of his administration to empower the next generation by offering them the opportunity for growth and self-development.

The state helmsman while urging members of the committee to embrace the responsibility given to them with a deep sense of purpose, noted that their attention to detail, effective planning and seamless execution would be the magic they would need to host a remarkable edition of the festival.

Earlier in his response, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee and former Commissioner for Youths and Sports in the State; Bukola Olopade commended Governor Abiodun for bidding and winning the right to host a successful National Sports Festival.

He acknowledged Governor Abiodun for being the first governor in the country to ensure that all its athletes at the last National Sports Festival in Delta State went home with cash rewards irrespective of winning or losing.

"You have achieved two seconds to none already when our athletes came back from Delta State and you announced the reward to the athletes. I know I speak authoritatively when I say that has not happened before in this country where every participating athlete got something to take home despite the fact that they didn't come back home with medals. It has never happened before.

"The second thing you've achieved is to put together your Excellency the aficionados of sports today in Nigeria, the gentlemen and women that are assembled here before you today are literally the best brains and minds in sports today in Nigeria," he said.

Tinubu Decorates Service Chiefs With New Ranks

President Bola Tinubu is currently decorating the Chief of Defense Staff, Major General Christopher Musa, alongside the Chiefs of Army, Naval and Air Staff with their new ranks.

The decoration ceremony holding at the President’s office comes six weeks after their appointment on June 19, 2023.

Those being decorated are Chief of Army Staff, Major General Taoreed Lagbaja; Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla; and Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshall Hassan Abubakar.

Abiodun Sends Names Of Commissioner-Nominees To Ogun Assembly

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun has forwarded names of commissioner-nominees to the state House of Assembly.

This was confirmed on Friday by the Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Olakunle Oluomo.

Oluomo said that the Assembly received a correspondence from Governor Abiodun requesting the confirmation of commissioner-nominees.

According to a statement by the Clerk/Head of Legislative Service, Mr Deji Adeyemo, the Speaker received the governor’s letter dated 27th of July, 2023 requesting the confirmation of the nominees by the lawmakers.

The governor’s correspondence reads: "I write once again to congratulate Mr. Speaker for your re-election into office as Rt. Honourable Speaker of the 10th Assembly and subsequent inauguration of all members of the Honourable House. I appreciate the Honourable House for the support and cooperation enjoyed during the first term of our administration.

"In furtherance of our mission in building our dear State together, Mr. Speaker, please find attached, the list of nominees for the post of commissioners for your consideration."

The statement clarified that as of the rule, the Speaker would announce the names on the list to the lawmakers at the next plenary day slated for Tuesday, 1st of August, 2023.

DESPITE HEAVY DEFEATS, BARBRA BANDA REMAINS POSITIVE.

Copper Queens skipper Barbra Banda is determined to stay positive despite Zambia's elimination from the FIFA Women's World Cup. The team lost 5-0 to Spain in their second group match on Wednesday, confirming their exit from the tournament.

"It was a bad day for us because we were hoping to win, but we didn't carry the day, and we have been eliminated," Banda said. "We just have to forge ahead to the last game that we are going to have against Costa Rica."

Banda, who is an important part of the Copper Queens team, said that Zambia lacked experience against Spain in their first World Cup appearance. However, she is hopeful that the team will do better in the next tournament.

"Looking at our team, most players this is when they are gaining experience," she said. "We are hoping if we qualify for the next World Cup we will do better. We just have to be determined and work hard."

Zambia will face Costa Rica in their final group match on Monday. Both teams have been eliminated from the tournament, but they will be looking to end their campaigns on a positive note.

"We are still positive," Banda said. "We want to go.

Gateway United FC General Manager Commends Gov. Abiodun For Payment Of Regular Salaries To Players, Technical Crew

ABEOKUTA - The Acting General Manager of Ogun state-owned football club, Gateway United FC, Mr Niyi Soleye has commended the Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun for the prompt payment of salaries and allowances of players, appealing to the governor to also release the outstanding allowances for technical crew for optimal performance.

Mr. Soleye made the commendation when he received the newly elected executive members of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ogun State Chapter at club's Secretariat, MKO stadium, kuto Abeokuta on Wednesday.

The GM maintained that, Ogun State was among the few states that pay regular salaries and allowances to their players and management team.

He said since 2019 the governor was elected in his first term, no player of the state-owned football clubs is owed a salary or match bonus.

 He, therefore, appealed to the Ogun State government to provide the football team with a-42 seater bus and other incentives to boost their morale ahead of the 2023/2024 Nigeria National League, NNL season.

He disclosed that, the team's lateness to match venue due in the just concluded 2022/23 NNL season denied the team qualification to the elite division of the Nigeria Premier League.

Mr. Soleye maintained that, the epileptic status of the 20-seater coaster bus cost the team to pick the maximum three points to qualify for the Super 8 and subsequent promotion to the Nigeria Premier League this season.

According to him, the team missed the important three points against Ikorodu United to qualify for this season's NPL when the team bus developed the usual mechanical fault along Sagamu-Abeokuta expressway which forced them to arrive late for the match.

He explained that the bus developed mechanical and wiring faults on many occasions while the team traveled to the Northern and Eastern parts of the country to execute matches which forced the players and technical crew to sleep on the road and subsequently missed such match or played under duress.

Recall that, Gateway United gained promotion to the Nigeria Premier League in 2006/07 and 2009/10 seasons.

But ever since, the team has been languishing in the second tier of the Nigeria Premier League.

The Acting GM who described the bus being used since 2011 as outdated, attributed the inability of the team's failure to pick the ticket to the elite division of the league to logistics.

"It has been our prayer that this team does not belong to NNL, but unfortunately, we found ourselves where we are. One major factor responsible for not qualifying for the NPL this season is our team bus. The bus we are using is outdated, the bus was to be replaced every four years due to the long-distance journey, but since 2011, we are still using the same bus which has cost the promotional ticket to NPL.

"In the last abridged league format, we lost the all-important three points to Ikorodu United in Lagos when the team bus developed a fault and we only got to the match venue 15 minutes to the end of the match.

"We need a 42-seater Marco polo bus that will convey both the players, technical crew and management staff to match venues. If we get the tools to work with, we will perform better."

He announced that arrangements had been concluded for the resumption of the players in preparation for the new season.

Mr Soleye who thanked members of the Sports Writers in Ogun State called for the sustained synergy with the association as the league begins soon.

Earlier, The Ogun State Chairman, Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Mr Michael-Azeez Ogunsiji appreciated the management of the Gateway United for their support to the association.

Mr. Ogunsiji assured the management of the state owned football team readiness of the association to give the club the adequate coverage.

The highlight of the visit was the official presentation of Jersey to the chairman of the association.

Ogun To Locate CNG Fuelling Stations Along Bus Routes, Says Abiodun

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun has disclosed that fueling stations for Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) would be positioned along bus routes across the state.

Governor Abiodun, who made this known in an interview with newsmen at the arcade ground of the Governor's Office shortly after inspecting the first successfully converted diesel/petrol buses to CNG, noted that the positioning of the CNG fuel stations along bus routes would ensure the sustainability and smooth running of the project.

Abiodun also added that the abundance of gas in the state is a major factor that would aid the successful transition.

He said that his administration is currently looking at how to convert close to 2000 buses at the expense of the state government.

"Obviously as we proceed, we will be positioning our fueling centres on the bus routes, conveniently located so that the buses can refill from time to time.

"Luckily for us in Ogun State, we have an abundance of gas. Ogun State has a crisscross of pipelines, be it Epe, be it the West Africa gas pipeline, that explains why we have a proliferation of industries in Ogun State.

"So today, this bus has been successfully converted, and the conversion of other buses is also in progress. The plan is to first convert the state-owned buses and then begin the conversation of all mass transit buses that are even owned by the private sector.

"We will be converting the buses at our expense. If we don't do that, the owners of the buses will not be able to afford the cost of the conversion. So, the state has decided to take on that cost and find a way to amortize the expense over so many years.

"We are already thinking of how many gangs we need to have and how quickly we can complete the conversion of close to maybe 2000 buses in the state," he said.

Governor Abiodun also emphasise that his administration would in the next three weeks launch its E-mobility programme.

"Alongside with that, within the next two to three weeks, we will be launching our E-mobility program, which is a program that aims to swap all our petrol-dependent motorcycles and tricycles with electricity-powered ones that would be powered by rechargeable batteries.

"In another month, you will begin to see more electricity-powered motorcycles and tricycles in our state. This way, gradually, over the next three to four months, our people can begin to enjoy being moved from one point to another at fares that were obtained before deregulation," he said.

Abiodun noted that old buses operating in the state would gradually be faced out as they get older.

"This is a journey, the ultimate aim is to have buses that will be powered by electricity. However, we appreciate the fact that we have relatively new buses.

"We have commercial buses out there that may not be so new, but are still road worthy. We cannot just wake up one day and scrap all those buses. We must transit from those buses that are currently burning diesel and petrol to those that would be powered by electricity.

"The plan is we convert the current ones to use gas and we now begin to gradually face them out. As they age, we face them out and replace them with electric powered buses, whilst we roll out the required infrastructure that they would require, charging stations and uninterrupted power supply," he said.

Earlier in his remarks, the head of Nigeria Gas Transportation Solution Limited; Milind Dakhole disclosed that the buses were fitted with tanks that would allow them to travel about 150 kilometres.

He noted that the buses are safe for usage.

Ogun Govt Expresses Confidence To Win 2024 National Sports Festival

The Ogun State Government has expressed confidence of winning the 22nd National Sports Festival to be held by the state in 2024.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youths and Sports, Dr. Yusuf Qudus made this known on Wednesday when the newly elected executives of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ogun state chapter paid him a courtesy visit.

Dr. Yusuf who noted that the efforts were on to get the best athletes that will represent the state at the biennial event described the association as a partner that will assist the state in growth of sports in the state.

He disclosed that, the state government has sent out scouting team to bring back home the state athletes representing other states.

He maintained that, the state government has approved organizing of national and sub-national events to test the sporting facilities spread across the state and to expose the athletes in readiness for the National Sports Festival.

According to him, these national and sub-national events would help the state to discover more talents and nurture them I become international stars.

The Permanent Secretary while congratulating the new executives for their emergence at the election urged members of the association to be objective and fair in their reportage.

He reaffirmed the ministry's determination to support the association to take the association to the next level.

"The role of SWAN can not be downplayed in the coming National Sports Festival. We want to urge you to report the state government's impact on sports development objectively.

"We have encouraged National and Sub national events to test our facilities and expose our talents and get new talents ahead of the National Sports Festival.

"The sports ministry want a very cordial relationship and partnership that will help us to grow sports. We have begun the process of recalling our athletes in other states. We have sent out our scouts to look for these athletes because Ogun state is hosting the National Sports Festival to win. We have to thank His Excellency, Governor Dapo Abiodun for this.

Earlier, the SWAN Chairman, Mr Michael-Azeez Ogunsiji thanked the state government for winning the hosting right for the 22nd National Sports Festival in 2024.

Ogunsiji noted that, the Nigeria Olympics would boost the internally generated revenue of the state during the festival.

Ogunsiji who noted that the association remained a partner in the development of sports in the state solicited the continued support of the ministry to the association.

The newly elected executives of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ogun State chapter, led by Michael Azeez Ogunsiji, paid a courtesy visit to the management of Gateway United FC at the club secretariat, MKO Abiola Stadium, Kuto Abeokuta.

During the visit, the Chairman of Ogun SWAN, Michael-Azeez Ogunsiji, expressed the purpose of their visit, which was to acquaint the club with the new development and to encourage them not to relent in their pursuit of excellence.

In response, the acting General Manager of Gateway Club, Niyi Soleye, warmly received the Ogun SWAN executives and assured them of a more robust partnership aimed at repositioning sports writing in the state.

Additionally, Michael-Azeez Ogunsiji, the Ogun SWAN chairman, emphasized the importance of promoting sports journalism and fostering a strong collaboration between sports writers and the sports clubs.

He highlighted the pivotal role that media coverage plays in raising awareness about the accomplishments, challenges, and potential of athletes and teams, both locally and nationally.

Abiodun calls for police support in flushing out kidnappers, cultists, set to launch surveillance drone

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State on Wednesday said efforts are being made by his government to flush out kidnappers, cultists, and land grabbers.

Consequently, the state government has concluded arrangements to launch its surveillance drones, to be performed by the Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun.

Governor Abiodun spoke when he received the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), Zone 2, comprising Ogun and Lagos states, Mr Ari Mohammed Ali, who paid him a courtesy call in his office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

Prince Abiodun noted that kidnapping, cultism, and land grabbing are serious security challenges facing the government that must be tackled headlong.

He said: "Very soon, we will be inviting the Inspector General to our state because we want to launch our Surveillance Drones. We believe that with the use of drones, we will be able to reduce the number of blind spots that we have in the state because as of now, there is no way, even if we deplore the entire police in Ogun State, we can not cover all the blind spots in the state.

"When we deplore these drones, particularly, along the known occurrences, it will allow men of the Command to respond to distress calls as soon as they identified where the crime has been committed.

"Also, I would like to plead with you for some of your men to assist us in this anti-cultism fight. We are prepared to provide them with the required logistics as the former CP will be overseeing the different units of Anti-cultism, kidnapping, and Quick Response Squad.

The governor, who solicited the cooperation of the AIG in breaking the backbone of land grabbing, said, when arrested, the culprits prefer being taken to Zone 2 to avoid being prosecuted.

He said: "I want to solicit your support in ensuring that we break the back of this land grabbing. I understand that there are instances where land grabbers are arrested in Ogun State and they are brought to Zone 2 for questioning. 

"I expect that they take them straight to the Commissioner of Police first and only if the CP in his wisdom believes that the case should be transferred to the Assistant Inspector General of Police, then it should be transferred to the AIG because what we found out in the past is that they do this to avoid been properly prosecuted.

"They believe they can come to Zone 2 and play some games. When they are left off the hook, they come back again to terrorise the people. Most of the land grabbers are repeat offenders. So I want you to help us to look into this so that we can ensure that the land grabbers do not  escape the long hands of the law."

Prince Abiodun assured of logistics support to the police to enable them to discharge their duties effectively.

Prince Abiodun emphasized that as a state with the highest number of industries in the country as well as educational and religious camps, coupled with having the busiest federal highway, a lot of pressure is put on the security architecture, hence his administration is collaborating with neighbouring states in patrolling major roads, particularly at the border areas, to reduce attacks from hoodlums.

He said for the state to sustain its position as the industrial hub of the country, his administration would ensure that incidences of security infraction are nip in the bud, expressing the hope that with AIG Ali's rich experience and background in operations, insecurity in the state would be a thing of the past.

Speaking earlier, AIG Mohammed Ali, said he came to familiarise himself with the state, adding that his Zone was ready to take the fight to all land grabbers, kidnappers and cultists disrupting the peace of the state.

He appreciated the governor for his past assistance to the zone and called for more support from the state government to enable his officers and men to carry out their duties more efficiently.

Operate Within Your Jurisdiction------- Hon Adesina Tells FRSC Officers.

Officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps have been told to operate within their jurisdiction and desist from bombarding the council area without any justification.

The statement was made by the Executive Chairman of Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun State, Hon Adesina Sikiru Adisa when playing host to the new Unit Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Itori Unit Command, ACC Okusi  S. O. in the council's conference room at the local government secretariat, Itori.

Hon Adesina disclosed that FRSC Officers from other units are fond of operating withing the council area without any tangible reason .

His words : " I have received series of complaints about the officers that use to come from Ifo and Abeokuta to operate in our territory, infact about four road safety points are created, Papalanto, Obada--Oko, Arigbajo and Ajegunle area  ."------the Chairman said.

Hon Adesina disclosed that FRSC Officers from other units are fond of operating withing the council area without any tangible reason .

His words : " I have received series of complaints about the officers that use to come from Ifo and Abeokuta to operate in our territory, infact about four road safety points are created, Papalanto, Obada--Oko, Arigbajo and Ajegunle area  ."------the Chairman said.

"I thank God I have the opportunity to engage you today, though I know it is a federal road but each unit should have its own jurisdiction of operation."------ he added.

The council's helmsman, therefore appealed to ACC Okusi  to use his good office  by channeling the case through the appropriate quarters in order to put a stop to the anomaly .

Reacting to the issue of bad state of the Lagos --- Abeokuta Old  Road, the Chairman explained that the local government had tried its best with the support of some private organizations by rendering palliative works on the road severally.

" I think you were there when we did palliative works on that  road . We have tried all our efforts, even beyond our capacity. It is only the Federal and State governments that have the financial muscle to fix the road ." ------the Chairman said .

" Though we will continue to mount pressure on the federal government to assist us in fixing the road , simply because it is the federal government that has the wherewithal ."-------he concluded.

The council boss , therefore, assured the new unit commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Itori Unit Command, ACC Okusi S. O. of his support and wished him memorable working experience in Ewekoro Local Government.

Speaking earlier, ACC Okusi S.O. , the Itori Unit Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps expressed his gratitude for the warm reception accorded him and his entourage.

He commended the chairman, Hon Adesina Sikiru Adisa for the unflinching support given to the unit command and other security agencies in the council area.

" One of the visions of the Federal Road Safety Corps is to meet stakeholders whenever one is transferred to a new station . I have met many  different people but you are a big stakeholder being our host, and I have heard and seen by myself your hand of fellowship to other security agencies." ----- he stated.

ACC Okusi , stressed the enormousity of their operation which according to him included reducing accident to the bearest minimum, through sensitization and public education in churches, mosques and market places.

The unit commander used the occasion to appeal to the Chairman to prevail on the eminent people in the council area to desist from the habit of using one-way , most especially at Lapeleke junction.

" This appeal becomes necessary because of the risk to the lives of other road users . Sometimes, these eminent people overwhelm my men at Lapeleke , two of my men were knocked down while performing their duty ." ----- Okusi lamented.

Ogun: Tribunal adjourns sitting, as PDP fails to call more witnesses; set to close case earlier

The governorship election petition tribunal sitting in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital on Tuesday adjourned proceedings earlier than expected, when the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) could not produce more  witnesses as scheduled.

The party's Counsel, Chief Chris Uche SAN, called only one witness - Ayinde Ridwan Olamilekan from Abeokuta - and hoped to call two further witnesses from Odogbolu but none of the scheduled witnesses showed up.

Chief Uche SAN informed the tribunal that the vehicle conveying the two further witnesses to the venue of the tribunal broke down on the road and therefore made it impossible for them to attend the proceedings, as he prayed the court for an adjournment till tomorrow, which was granted accordingly.

Also, considering the abysmal  response of scheduled witnesses, the PDP,  through it's counsel has changed the  date slated to close it's case to Thursday, against Friday earlier planned. In the meantime, Chief Uche SAN informed the Tribunal that he had earlier today filed the Witness Statement of an Expert Witness - one Chief Reginald Udunze - as well as the Expert Report of the said witness. He informed the Tribunal that as was the practice, he would like to give the lawyers for APC and Governor Abiodun time to peruse those documents since they had just been served. 

Meanwhile, during the short  proceedings, the sole witness who appeared before the panel to testify in favour of PDP, Ayinde Ridwan Olamilekan, from Abeokuta South,  was crossed examined by the counsel to Governor Dapo Abiodun, Bode Olanipekun SAN.

Under cross-examination, Ridwan declared that he could not remember the date he signed the statement he submitted to the tribunal; that is even as similarities were detected in his statement after being compared with others from different polling units.

Ridwan had claimed to simply just be a voter and not a member or supporter of PDP. However, under cross-examination, he revealed that when the events of the Election Day occurred, he decided to report his side of the events to the PDP Ward Chairman and PDP lawyer.  On why he decided to report his grievances during the exercise to PDP lawyer when he he is not a member of the political party and even wrote the statement he tendered before the panel at PDP secretariat, the witness could not give any answer to the question as he kept pretending to not understand questions by asking the lawyers cross-examining him to “come again”. This pretence became so rampant that the Tribunal had to call on PDP’s counsel Chief Uche SAN, to instruct Ridwan appropriately. It was only after Chief Uche instructed Ridwan that Ridwan began to answer questions directly, most of which showed that he was a massive sympathiser of the PDP who was even called on telephone by the PDP Ward Chairman on Election Day.

The suspended Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele, has arrived at the Federal High Court, Lagos for his arraignment on a two-count charge of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.

Emefiele was suspended by President Bola Tinubu with immediate effect on June 10 for an ongoing investigation of his office and the planned reforms in the financial sector of the economy.

He was charged to court by the Department of State Services with possessing a single-barrelled shotgun (JOJEFF MAGNUM 8371) and 23 rounds of live ammunition (cartridges) without a license contrary to Section 8 of the Firearms Act and punishable under Section 27 (1)(b)(il) of the same Act.

Omission, similarities in statements continue to trail Ogun tribunal proceedings, as PDP calls more witnesses

As more witnesses from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) appeared before the governorship election petition tribunal sitting in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, cases of omission of necessary information and similarities in witnesses' statements have characterized the proceedings.

After being cross-examined by counsel to Governor Dapo Abiodun, Prof. Taiwo Osipitan, SAN, a witness, Balogun Ewaoluwa, a part three student of the University of Ibadan, from Remo North said that all that she wrote in her statement were dictated to her by a person she could not remember.

It was again discovered after thorough scrutiny that her unit was deliberately omitted while her statement shared similarities with other witnesses' statements earlier submitted to the panel.

On the claim of disenfranchisement in her statement, in which she was asked if she 

used the voters' register to claim that 179 voters were disenfranchised,  she responded by saying that she never set her eyes on the INEC's voters' register

Also, on her claim that some hoodlums loyal to the All Progressives Congress (APC)  came to disrupt the electoral process where she voted, it was later discovered under cross-examination that such a claim was not included in her statement but was hearsay.

Another witness, called by the PDP, Mr Balogun Rahman, deliberately omitted the part of his membership of PDP in his statement, whereas, under cross-examination, it was discovered that he is an active and strong member of party in his capacity as a Youth Leader of Ward 5, Oke Agbo.

When he was asked to sign his signature in furtherance of the cross-examination, counsel to the Petitioners,  Chief Chris Uche objected on the ground that the witness’ confidential details will be exposed, which led Prof Osipitan to withdraw the question. 

In the same vein, a witness from Ogun Waterside, Olufunlayo John, who claimed to be a businessman turned out to be a fisherman after being cross-examined by counsel to Governor Abiodun, Mr Bode Olanipekun, SAN.

It was also discovered when scrutinized further that the witness could neither read nor write, despite presenting a statement written in English to the panel and without interpretation or indication that the statement was interpreted.

He later disclosed that he was not privy to how his purported statement was written and typed.

Counsel to the Petitioners, Chris Uche, SAN, quickly prayed the panel for an adjournment, in which the sitting was adjourned till Tuesday, July 25 for the continuation of proceedings.

I did not know INEC has lawyer- PDP's subpoenaed witness tells Ogun Tribunal ...claims to represent electoral umpire

A subpoenaed witness called by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Eze Desmond, from GRA Road, Sagamu, who claimed to be an ad-hoc staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared that he was not aware that the commission has a lawyer.

Desmond made this declaration when being cross-examined by the counsel of Governor Dapo Abiodun, Prof. Taiwo Osipitan, SAN, who objected to the documents tendered by the witness but reserved his objection to his final address.

The witness was responding to a question put to him by Osipitan, who queried how he got the contact address of PDP's lawyer who he claimed he approached upon receiving a subpoena to appear before the tribunal.

Osipitan, while cross-examining the witness also asked about how he got the subpoena and the address he used, to which he responded that it was addressed to him personally and not through INEC.

The witness, who was a corps member said he completed his mandatory service year on May 18th and that he didn't inform INEC about the subpoena and his intention to appear before the panel as an ad-hoc staff of the electoral umpire.

When asked about his experience on the issue of alleged violence where he worked, he said he did not witness any, contrary to what the document he tendered indicates.

Also, a witness of the PDP, Bamidele Aiyedun, from Ikenne, to the dismay of many admitted that there is something wrong in his statement of oath.

Another subpoenaed witness for PDP, Oristhefe Okotipi, who claimed to have worked for INEC as an ad-hoc staff during the gubernatorial poll could not mention the serial numbers of the booklet used for the governorship and House of Assembly elections.

He couldn't also provide any evidence that confirm that he truly worked for INEC, as he admitted that the commission was not in the know of his appearance before the tribunal.

Meanwhile, all the counsels to the respondents expressly objected to those documents tendered before the tribunal by the PDP's subpoenaed witnesses. They however, reserved their objections to their final addresses.

The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for the the 2024 National Sports Festival scheduled to take place in Ogun State, has congratulated the newly elected Executives of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ogun State Chapter.

In a congratulatory message, the Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee, Chief Bukola Olopade expressed confidence that the newly inaugurated SWAN Exco in the Gateway state will work as a team to propel the association to greater heights.

Chief Olopade, a former Commissioner for Youth and Sports in the Gateway state also made it known that the LOC is counting on Ogun State SWAN, and sport writers in the country as a whole to publicize and project the multi sports event satisfactorily when it takes centre stage in 2024.

He said "Congratulations to the new SWAN chairman and other Executive members, I'm convinced because of how dependable the Association has been in the last couple of years, I'm also counting on Ogun SWAN and the Nigerian Media as a whole to give the festival the right reportage".

Chief Olopade assured that the LOC as empowered by the Ogun State government under the leadership of Governor Dapo Abiodun, will do everything humanly possible to ensure that the 2024 National Sports Festival will be top notch and glamorous on all front.

On Wednesday, Ogun SWAN elected Mr. Michael Azeez Ogunsiji as its new Chairman, he takes over from veteran sports writer Alhaji Hakeem Akintunde.

NUJ President Congratulates New Ogun SWAN Chairman

National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade, Chris Isiguzo, has congratulated Comrade Michael-Azeez Ogunsiji, following his emergence as the Chairman, Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ogun State Chapter.

He also extended the felicitation to other elected executive committee members.

Ogunsiji emerged on Wednesday at the 2023 State Elective Congress held at the MKO Abiola International Stadium, Kuto, Abeokuta.

The NUJ President in a congratulatory message urged Comrade Ogunsiji to use his wealth of experience as a former Secretary of the association to bear in running the affairs of SWAN.

He also expressed confidence that the emergence of Comrade Ogunsiji will foster peace and bring about more unity and development in Ogun SWAN family.

He urged the new Chairman to avail the Ogun SWAN his vast experience  in sports coverage and reporting to take sports in the Gateway State to greater heights.

The number one Journalist in Nigeria, however, solicits for members' support for the new Ogun SWAN Executive  committee in a bid to ensure that the state remain pacesetter and example to other state chapters .

Elegbeleye heads Nigeria Premier Football League board

The Nigeria Football Federation has constituted the board of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) with former chairman of the Interim Management Committee (IMC), Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye, as chairman of the board.

Elegbeleye, a former deputy chairman of the House of Representatives’ Committee on Youth and Sports, and also a former Director-General of the National Sports Commission, headed the IMC that brilliantly executed the last NPFL season and and the Super 6, drawing high praise from the NFF and stakeholders in general. 

With Elegbeleye on the new NPFL board are Mallam Mohammed Nasiru Sa’idu (Member); Barr. Poubeni Ogun (Member); Mr. Daniel Amokachi (Member); Dr. Okey Kpalukwu (Member); Mallam Suleiman Umar (Member) and; Mr. Dominic Iorfa (Member).

The Secretary/Legal Adviser is Barr. Danlami Ibrahim while the Chief Operating Officer is Prince Davidson Owumi.

The new NPFL board has a two-year tenure, same as the boards of the Nigeria National League, the Nigeria Women Football League and the Nigeria Nation-Wide League One that were inaugurated on Monday.

Otedola, others commend Abiodun's initiatives on Agro Cargo International Airport

Billionaire business mogul, Femi Otedola, has glowingly eulogized Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, on his decisive approach towards aggressive industrialization in Ogun State, through the ongoing construction of Agro Cargo International Airport.

Otedola, gave the commendation via his verified social media handle, lauding Abiodun's giant strides in various masses oriented projects geared towards sustainable growth in the State.

He, therefore, pledged his unalloyed support for the governor and the state through partnership,  to accelerate even development for the ultimate benefit of Ogun citizenry and Nigeria people as a whole.

Oloyede, who spoke on the theme of the tour, "Industrialisation, Climate Change and Energy Security in Nigeria: Issues, Challenges & Prospects", commended the state governor for embarking on massive industrial revolution through the construction of Agro Cargo International Airport.

He, opined that the Cargo Airport would strengthen economic growth in the state especially in the area of  quick  and adequate supply of raw materials to the manufacturing sector.

Oloyede,  lauded the strategic location of the airport, with it's proximity to Western parts of Nigeria, Lagos -Ibadan expressway, on the southern side and Sagamu -Benin expressway.

In his remarks,  Secretary to the State Government, Tokunbo Talabi, said the initiative was targeted  towards  aggressive industrialization in the state, which  is strictly guided by an inherent developmental philosophy of ISEYA mantra, as entrenched in the state's  distinct agenda, which is Building Our Future Together."

OGUN NUJ CONGRATULATES NEW SWAN EXECUTIVES

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun State Council congratulates the new executives of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, Ogun State Chapter led by Comrade Michael Ogunsiji.

In a statement jointly signed by the Chairman, Comrade Wale Olanrewaju and the Secretary, Comrade Bunmi Adigun, it stated that the time to play politics are over and working to move the Association as an affiliate of the Union in Ogun state should commence immediately as nothing good can happen in an atmosphere where there is no peace.

The Union assures the new executives of an open door policy as the Chairman is an automatic member of the State Working Committee (SWC) and his expertise will be needed to continue with the ongoing development and the fresh air enjoyed at the state level in recent time.

He  charged the new leader of Sports Writers in the State to  lead his members from the front with vision towards sports development.

Ogun SWAN Members Elect New Leaders, As Ogunsiji Becomes Chairman

The members of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Ogun state chapter has elected new leaders to oversee the affairs of the Association for thr next 3Years as Michael Azeez-Ogunsiji Emerged as Chairman.

The election held on Wednesday 19th of July, 2023 at the Association's Secretariat, MKO Abiola Stadium, Kuto Abeokuta the state capital.

The newly chairman, Ogunsiji emerged unopposed and Taiwo Fabajo got 23 votes to emerged as the vice chairman.

Segun Folarin emerged as the secretary of the Association with 15 votes ahead Hakeem Adegbenro who got 8 votes.

Michael Adesanya emerged as Treasurer with 23 votes and Bayo Adegboyega emerged Assistant Secretary with 23 votes.

In his acceptance speech, Ogunsiji appreciated all the members, past and present leaders of the Association especially the outgoing chairman for his trust in him to support him to be his successor.

He promised to continue to reconfigure the Association to the envy and admiration of everyone within and outside its fold.

He also appealed to the State Ministry of Youths and Sports, State Sports Council, Chairmen of different sports associations and philanthropists to recognize and consider SWAN as partners in progress in the development of sports in Ogun State, Nigeria and the world at large.

Also present at the election venue are the former chairmen, National leaders of the Association, former and present leaders of NUJ.

Ogun: Tribunal dismisses PDP's objection, as counsel steps down subpoenaed witness

The governorship election petition tribunal sitting in Abeokuta, the state capital, on Tuesday dismissed an objection raised by counsel to the  Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Gordy Uche, SAN, to the effect that under cross-examination, the petitioner's witness must not be asked to compare with witness statement with statements made by other Petititoners’ statements  not authored by the witness.

Counsel to the 1st Respondent(INEC) Dr Remi Olatubora, had put questions across to a witness called by the PDP, Hon. Aina Adewale, from Sagamu, based on the similarities of his witness statement with two others, Sowande Seun, from Sagamu and Ademola Adekunle, from Abeokuta North.

The similarities, according to INEC's counsel were to the extent of word for word and omission for omission, hence, the need to question the witness thoroughly with the aim of ascertaining his veracity and accuracy.

However, in an objection to the application, the petitioner's counsel said tribunal should not allow his witness to be questioned on documents which he did not author, quoting copiously section 67 of the evidence act  and other decided authorities.

In his  response, counsel to INEC, Olatubora, prayed the panel to discountenance the objection, arguing that points raised by the PDP's counsel and his position on the points of law were irrelevant to the issue under review, relying on section 223 of the evidence act. He argued that the Evidence Act allows him to cross-examine a witness in any manner that tests the witness’ credibility and veracity. 

He added that in line with the provision of that section of the evidence act and in line with the spirit and letter of the 1999 constitution,  which places high premium on fair hearing, his position as the counsel to INEC confers the right on him to cross examine the witness to test his veracity and knowledge.

Adding to Olatubora’s position, Gov Abiodun’s lawyer, Professor Taiwo Osipitan SAN added that one of the statutory purposes of cross-examination is to discover who a witness is. He added that in that regard, asking a witness to compare his witness statement with the witness statements of other witnesses is allowed because it give the witness the opportunity to explain why his evidence is completely the same with the evidence of a witness from somewhere else, while also giving the Tribunal to discover whether the witness is a copycat or other form of unreliable witness. 

Counsel to APC, Otunba Kunle Kalejaiye submitted that PDP’s lawyer had not shown to the Tribunal whether the question asked of the witness was scandalous, immodest,  offensive, or of any other nature prohibited by law. He joined the other lawyers to ask the Tribunal to overrule the objection. 

The tribunal, therefore, overruled the objection raised by the counsel to PDP, making reference to it's previous rulings on similar objections.

In another development, counsel to the PDP, was made to step down the appearance of a  subpoenaed witness, a supposed INEC staff, who he claimed worked as a presiding officer during the March 18th governorship poll, after counsels to INEC raised objections to such testimony, citing the fact that the statement of the witness was only made yesterday and served on Respondents yesterday.

Trial continues in Abeokuta.

BAMIDELE ABIODUN @57:ABIODUN THANKS WIFE FOR FILLING IN THE GAP

The Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun has praised his wife; Bamidele Abiodun for her continuous support and role at ensuring the successful implementation of his administrations ISEYA program; saying that her determination at ensuring his success as Governor of the state has helped in filling in the gap as he serves the people of the state.

Prince Dapo Abiodun who made this known during the 57th birthday thanksgiving of his wife held at the Government House Chapel,Oke-Igbehin, charged the congregation and the people of the state to deliberate and live a life that touches others.

" I want to thank you for filling in the gap as I serve the good people of Ogun State,.I want to thank you for your consistent prayers, may the Lord Almighty continue to protect and keep you under his shadow.

" Today is a special day of thanksgiving because my beautiful and adorable wife has added another year, we are here to celebrate what the Lord has done for us.

" I want to pray that God continues to give you Bamidele unspeakable and everlasting joy, may you fulfill your destiny," he said.

Abiodun who also noted that days like his wife's birthday thanksgiving are indeed worthy of celebration, said that " Days like these are indeed worthy of celebration,but at the same time, they are reminders that we have added one extra year and we have one less extra year left on this earth," he said.

The state Governor who also urged the people of the state to ask themselves of what reason God has created them, said that occasions like birthday thanksgivings are created not to only number our days, but to also give thanks to God.

In her remarks, the Celebrant and wife of the Ogun State Governor; Mrs Bamidele Abiodun who thanked God for giving her a good health and sound mind, thanked God for holding her hands even in times of tribulation.

Bamidele while noting that she would be intentional about how she lives her life from now on, thanked her husband for being her greatest supporter.

In his message titled " Unquantified Thanksgiving",the South West Chairman of the Organisation of Africa Instituted Churches(OAIC); His Grace Elder Apostle Jacob Adetokunbo Adeaga who read from the book of Psalm 103 disclosed that no man can ever quantify the level of the love of God in their life, saying that it is good to always thank God for his love in our lives.

Apostle Adeaga who also urged the first lady, Mrs Bamidele Abiodun to continuously thank God for his love in her life, charged her to continue to do more for God, the people and the state.

Adeaga who also thanked the husband of the celebrant, Governor Dapo Abiodun for his wonderful performance in his first term, charged him to surpass the performance of his first term.

OGUN NUJ CELEBRATES AREMO OLUSEGUN OSOBA ON 84TH BIRTHDAY

OGUN SWAN ELECTION TO HOLD ON WEDNESDAY

Elections into the State Executive Council of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ogun State chapter will hold on Wednesday, July 19, 2023.

All aspirants vying for elective posts and registered members of the association in the state are hereby enjoined to be seated by 10am for the Extra Ordinary Congress for the dissolution of the current executive.

Election for new executive members that will run the affairs of the association for the next 3years will commence immediately after the congress.

The Extraordinary Congress and elections will hold at the SWAN Secretariat, MKO, Abiola stadium, Kuto, Abeokuta.

Ogun: Tribunal throws out PDP's objection, as cases of alleged forgery, impersonation persist

In continuation of proceedings at the Ogun State governorship election petition tribunal sitting in Abeokuta metropolis, the panel on Friday overruled an objection raised by counsel to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over inexplicably repetitive statements made by it’s different witnesses in different polling units even as falsehoods by witnesses called by PDP continue to be uncovered.

In overruling the PDP, the Tribunal reaffirmed its earlier ruling on same argument raised during one of the previous sittings.

There were reports from the tribunal in the past days of plethora evidences establishing alleged  impersonation and similarities in the witnesses' statements brought forward by different individuals  called by the PDP to testify in its favour.

Counsel to the  Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had raised observations and asked questions on similarities in the PDP witnesses'  statements and several cases of inconsistencies, in which the petitioner's counsel raised objection but was swiftly overruled by the panel.

The development was unanimously endorsed by all the counsels to the  respondents, as another witness called by the PDP, Isau Lawal, from Makun, Sagamu, allegedly  lied to have  applied to INEC for certified true  copies of documents in respect of the case under review and  in the same breath admitted that none of such documents was tendered before the tribunal.

Also, an alleged case of  impersonation was established against the PDP's witness, when counsel to All Progressives Congress,  (APC) called out a different name, Yewande Babatunde, as the PDP’s polling agent at PU002, Ward 12,  where Lawal claimed to have worked as  the party's agent, even as he has no means of identification to substantiate his claim that he was the party’s agent. He, however, admitted knowing Yewande Babatunde, the rightful agent of the party.

PDP witnesses admit having multiple signatures, as Ogun Tribunal continues proceedings

Proceedings at the governorship election petition tribunal, sitting in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital took another dimension on Wednesday, as some of the witnesses called by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) confessed to have used different signatures in their witness statements,  other than the one they used regularly on daily basis.

One of the witnesses, Ademola Adewale, after admitting to using a different signature in his witness statement also denied a part of his statement to the effect that he saw many voters at his Polling Unit ready and willing to vote but were disenfranchised.

In the same vein, Alhaji Abiodun Sotinwa, another  PDP witness and a businessman from Iperu, in Ikenne Local Government, also admitted to having used a signature different from his regular signature for daily activities. He was later caught to have lied about his membership of the PDP when being crossed examined.

In another development, a witness invited by the PDP, Olufunmilola Desalu, a fashion designer also from Iperu expressed surprise that her statement was the same as that of Sotinwa, although, she claimed not to have authored the witness statement.

The two statements were discovered to be word for word, presentation for presentation after counsel to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) thoroughly scrutinized the statements.

When further grilled by the INEC counsel on the reason for the similarities, she simply responded: “I think my lawyer is in a better position to answer that question."

Also, a trader, Ariyo Adeola, from Iperu, whose statement did not contain necessary details came to testify in favour of PDP, as she admitted to being the wife of the Chairman of PDP in Ikenne LGA.

She, however, denied being the ward woman leader of the party.

Going further on the proceedings, Mr Rafiu Hakeem Aro, from Iperu, a trader, was also called by the PDP as a witness. Meanwhile,   after being cross-examined, he told the tribunal that his witness statement was not written by him.

After a series of contradictions and inconsistencies on the part of all the witnesses, their counsel was compelled to beg for adjournment.

2024 National Sports Festival: Stakeholders Commend Ogun State Government For Putting Right Pegs In Right Holes

Ahead of the 2024 National Sports Festival scheduled to take place in Ogun State, stakeholders have expressed optimism that the 16 Man Local organizing committee unveiled by the Ogun State government will deliver a top-class Sports Festival next year.

Through the office of the Secretary to the state government, Mr. Tokunbo Talabi, the Ogun State government on Tuesday, unveiled a 16 man LOC list which has renowned sports entrepreneur and former commissioner for youth and sports in the Gateway state, Chief Bukola Olopade as Chairman.

The LOC will be Co-chaired by sports enthusiast, Mr. Tilewa Adebayo, while highly revered administrator, Dr. Kweku Adedayo Tandoh, Sports Psychologist Professor Seun Omotayo, Olympian Falilat Ogunkoya and former Director of Ogun State Sports Council, Prince Tunji Onatolu will serve as members among others.

While baring his mind, veteran sports Journalist,  Deacon Kunle Oluwusi noted that the state government has done well by appointing professionals to steer the ship when the National Sports Festival takes centre stage.

He said "The government has empowered professionals to get the job done, I'm optimistic that the event will be a success".

"Four of the newly unveiled LOC members were also part of the hugely successful 2006 National Sports Festival tagged Gateway games, I was part of the team alongside Hon. Bukola Olopade, Professor Seun Omotayo, Falilat Ogunkoya and Prince Tunji Onatolu, so success is written all over the event".

The 2006 National Sports Festival is adjudged by several stakeholders as the most unique in the history of the NSF.

Speaking in the same vein, the President of African Football Agents Association (AFFAA), Apostle Michael Sodeke gave thumbs up to governor Dapo Abiodun for the timely approach, he said everyone in the list will contribute their quota towards the success of the event.

In his words "Everyone is looking forward to the festival, the last one we had in Ogun State is still very fresh in the memory, and now we are set for another glorious moment, the LOC will do well, those in the team are tested and trusted, so I'm appealing to all stakeholders to come together and put up something beyond the ordinary".

On the part of former chairman, House committee on sports, Ogun State House of Assembly, Hon. Olufemi Allen Taylor, the LOC can't afford to fail, he stressed that it's pertinent for vibrant individuals to be appointed into several sub committees, he also wished the LOC the best of luck.

Germany based former table tennis player, Dapo Akiode said he's looking forward to the multi sports event already, he assured Nigerians that the LOC has what it takes to put up the most glamorous National Sports Festival ever in the country.

Ogun set to host NSF 2024; Olopade, Adebajo, others to lead 16-man committee

Ogun State government, on Tuesday, announced its readiness to hold the 2024 National Sports Festival (NSF) in fulfilment of an earlier promise made by the Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, as it unveiled leading professionals in Nigeria's sports sector as Local organizing Committee (LOC)  members.

It would be recalled that the state government, earlier in May, had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Sports and Youth Development.

During that occasion, Governor Abiodun had told the Federal Government delegation led by the then Minister of Sports, Mr Sunday Dare, that Ogun State, being a state noted for recording many firsts in all spheres of human endeavour, was ready to host a world-class festival in 2024, asserting that the State had capable hands and sponsors ready to support the bid.

To that end, the former minister,  while expressing the FG's acceptance of the proposal noted that the choice of Ogun State as the next host of the NSF was due to its culture of sports development, availability of sporting infrastructure and potential to host a befitting festival that would linger for a long time.

Unveiling the 16-man local organizing committee in Abeokuta, the state capital on Tuesday, Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr. Tokunbo Talabi, in a statement listed former Commissioner for Youths and Sports in the state, Hon. Bukola Olapade as the chairman of the LOC alongside Mr Tilewa Adebajo, a sports enthusiast, as co-chairman.

Olopade, the progenitor of the top-rated Access Bank-sponsored Lagos City Marathon, Abeokuta 10km Marathon race, and the Remo ultra-race, remains topnotch in the world of sports in Nigeria.

Another member of the Committee, Chief (Mrs.) Falilat Ogunkoya-Omotayo (MON) who is regarded as the Queen of tracks is a 1998 World Cup of Athletics Champion, 400 metres grand prix champion, 200 metres world champion, two-time Olympic medalist and the first female Nigerian to win an individual Olympic medal and hold the African record in 400 metres till date. 

Others include the  Secretary-general of the local organising committee (LOC) for the NSF Edo 2020, Dr Emmanuel Igbinosa, one of Nigeria's notable sports administrators, ex-chairman of the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC); working committee of the African Table Tennis Federation (ATTF) and Chairman of the Youth Committee of African Table Tennis Federation, Dr Kweku Tandoh, as well as the renowned sports psychologist and head of the Department of Sports and Exercise Medical Sciences at University of Health and Allied Sciences, Ho, Ghana, Professor Oluwaseun Olanrewaju Omotayo, 

Also in the Committee are the Vice Chairman of Ijebu Ode Local Government, Hon  Dare Alebiosu; Mr. Kunle Solaja, Olusegun Oyende, Mr Olatunji Onatolu, Mrs. Modele Sharafa Yussuf,  Demola Are, Abiodun Jubril Elegbede, Ola Opedimeji Adisa, the former Commissioner for Youth & Sports and the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youth & Sports.

The statement said that the LOC has been mandated to set up subcommittees, made up of various stakeholders to ensure a hitch-free exercise as well as deliver a sports festival that is second to none in the country.
